| | SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING | | |
While February is often associated with candy hearts and roses, it’s the perfect time to look a little deeper at how we care for ourselves and one another. This month, we are putting a special spotlight on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL).
SEL is about more than just "being nice." It’s the process of developing the self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills that are vital for school, work, and life success. This February, focus on the "Heart" of the matter: Empathy and Relationship Skills.
The "Heart" of SEL: Skills to Practice
Throughout the month, encourage your children to navigate their emotions and build stronger bonds with their peers, family, and friends:
-
Perspective-Taking: Learning to "walk in someone else's shoes" to understand different viewpoints.
-
The Power of "I" Statements: Helping your child express their feelings clearly (e.g., "I feel frustrated when...") rather than pointing fingers.
-
Acts of Service: Discovering how helping others can boost our own emotional well-being.
SEL at Home: Simple Ways to Connect
Here are three ways to bring the February SEL focus into your home:
The "Rose & Thorn" - During dinner, have everyone share one "Rose" (something good that happened) and one "Thorn" (something challenging). This builds empathy and active listening.
Feelings Check-In - Instead of a standard "How was your day?", try asking: "What was a moment today where you felt really proud/happy/brave?"
Kindness Challenges - Create a "Secret Kindness" mission. Encourage your child to do one helpful thing for a family member or neighbor without being asked.
Feb 11 is Random Acts of Kindness Day! We encourage everyone to perform one small, unexpected gesture of goodwill.

Ready Start Tangipahoa is an Early Childhood Education Network that unites public schools, Head Start, and childcare early learning centers. As the Community Network Lead Agency for Tangipahoa Parish, our mission is to prepare children for kindergarten and support their long-term success. However, we need your help to make this possible through donations and advocacy!
Thanks to the Louisiana Early Childhood Education Fund, all donations are matched dollar-for-dollar, doubling your contribution! This fund incentivizes local investment by matching locally raised funds to support early childhood care and education in our parish.

Are you a proud parent of a kindergarten student in Tangischools? Be on the lookout for the Once stories that are making their way home in your child's backpack!
As our students progress in the program, they reach reading benchmarks, which enables them to bring home their very own book!
If you notice a book come home, make a big deal about it! They are growing with leaps and bounds and we want you to take part in the celebration.
- Ask them about the book
- Read the book together (5 times)
- Give high fives and a "good job!"

It's National Magnet School Month
It’s time to celebrate what makes us unique! February is officially National Magnet School Month, a program which provides families with a choice in high-quality, themed education. We believe that when a student’s interests are at the center of their learning, there’s no limit to what they can achieve. Throughout this month, we’ll be showcasing the incredible student work and innovative teaching that makes our magnet program a leader in excellence.
What Makes a Magnet School Special?
Magnet schools are built on Five Pillars that set them apart from traditional neighborhood schools:
-
Diversity: Promoting equity and access for students of all backgrounds.
-
Innovative Curriculum: Hands-on, theme-based learning that goes beyond standard textbooks.
-
Academic Excellence: High standards that prepare students for college and careers.
-
High-Quality Instructional Systems: Specialized training for teachers in their specific themes.
-
Family & Community Partnerships: Deep connections with local businesses and organizations.
Whether your child is currently enrolled in a magnet program or you are considering one for next year, this month is the perfect time to celebrate what makes these "schools of choice" in Tangi so unique.

Attendance Procedures and Absence Excuses
To help our students stay on track and avoid truancy issues, we are sharing some important information regarding how absences are recorded. Our goal is to work with you to ensure that every absence is accurately documented.
1. Every Absence Requires a Note
Please submit a written excuse for every day your child is absent. These notes are important for accurate record-keeping and are the best way to prevent your child from being flagged for truancy.
-
Parents may provide up to 5 written notes per semester that mark an excused absence.
-
Consecutive Illness: If your child is sick for several days in a row (for example, with the flu), those consecutive days will count as only one of your five parent excuses.
2. Why Documentation Matters
Consistent communication helps us distinguish between a student who is struggling with illness and a student who is missing school without a reason. By turning in your notes promptly, you help us keep your child’s record up to date and accurate.
Thank you for your continued partnership in your child's education. If you have any questions regarding these updates, please contact the front office.
Sincerely,
TPSS Administration

Healthy Habits Promote Good School Attendance
One challenge we are all too familiar with is cold and flu season. To support everyone's well-being during this time, TPSS is implementing proactive, rigorous cleaning protocols. Our team continues to regularly disinfect classrooms, common areas, and all high-touch surfaces to ensure a safe environment for all students and employees.
Here are some measures everyone can take to help keep our school community healthy:
- Keep students home if they are feeling unwell. If your child has symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or other signs of illness, please allow them time to rest and recover before returning to school.
-
*Remember to send a Doctor's note or a written parent note when your child returns to school. As TPSS policy states, parents can send 5 parent notes to have absences excused during the 2nd semester.
- Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or use hand sanitizer
- Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or the inside of your elbow
- Avoid touching your face - germs often enter your body through the eyes, nose, and mouth

Every conversation matters—especially when it comes to youth mental health. The Rain Will Bring Flowers Foundation, alongside LSU Athletics, the Joe Burrow Foundation, Our Lady of the Lake Health, and the LCLUB, is bringing our community together once again for an evening rooted in hope, healing, and connection.
This year’s Planting Seeds of Hope event will feature powerful stories of resilience, open dialogue around youth mental wellness, and—for the first time ever—a special musical guest whose voice has inspired millions.
Families, athletes, military members, and community leaders will come together for a night that reminds us of one simple truth: our kids are not alone.
