I Love SPI Campaign Begins

The City of South Padre Island (SPI) is asking the community to love the Island this Valentine’s Day. The City, in partnership with Republic Services, is promoting the “I Love SPI” campaign to help residents
and businesses by adding an extra brush and bulky item pick-up service to the regular monthly service.

During the campaign, which will run until Feb. 14, residents and businesses may place brush and bulky items at the front of their property for collection.

“People spotted participating in the campaign may be awarded an I Love SPI t-shirt,” said Victor Baldovinos, Environmental Health director. “Please take advantage
and clear your property of debris and unwanted bulky items to get ready for the
busy season.”

The City is encouraging the community to bring recyclable items to the regular recycling drop-off service held every Saturday from 8 a.m. - 11 a.m. at the Community Center, located at 4501 Padre Boulevard .
Recyclable items accepted include #1 and #2 plastics, office paper, newspaper, cardboard, tin, and aluminum.

PR 100 Median, Boardwalk and Sidewalk Improvement Project Begins

The City of South Padre Island is pleased to announce that the PR 100 Median, Boardwalk and Sidewalk Improvement Project has begun. The project started this month and is estimated to be completed within 15 months.

The project will continue to improve traffic and pedestrian mobility along Padre Boulevard 3.3 miles moving towards the Convention Centre.

The project will impact a total of 2.5 miles of lane closures in 11 phases. The first phase started on Dolphin Street, along Padre Boulevard, to Retama Street.

To minimize negative impacts to businesses during peak times, construction affecting any lane closure is scheduled to temporarily pause during:

·          March (entire month)
·          April (3 -12)
·          June (Fridays - Sundays)
·          July (entire month)
·          August (Fridays - Sundays)

The PR 100, Median, Boardwalk and Sidewalk Improvement Project is part of the Venue Tax Project, approved by South Padre Island voters on November 8th, 2016, and funded through the Venue Tax Fund.
Oral Rabies Vaccination Program Begins
The City of South Padre Island Animal Control Division will be assisting the Texas Department of State Health Services, Zoonosis Control Division with the Oral Rabies Vaccination Program. The program is aimed at reducing, with the goal of eliminating, the dog strain of rabies carried by coyotes in Texas.
On Wednesday, Jan. 15, the baits containing a vaccination for rabies will be distributed around the City in non-populated areas that may attract coyotes. The baits are made of a fishmeal casing with a pouch in the center that contains the rabies vaccine.
“We have participated in the program for 10 years and it has proven to be successful,” said Victor Baldovinos, Environmental Health director. “This is done as a preventive measure.”
The public is urged to avoid disturbing the baits, which are clearly marked with warning signs. If a person or an animal should come in contact with the bait, please contact the number imprinted on the bait for the Texas Department of State Health Services, 1-877-722-6725 or .
