Thursday mornings Coffee and Conversation was awesome. We learned a lot about the upcoming 2020 Census and why it is so very important to our community. Watch for posts in the near future covering some of the specific reasons participation is important. Thank you Juan Gonzalez and Benito Juarez, Partnership Specialists with U.S. Census Bureau for joining us today and providing such great information. Thank you Mark Haggenmiller and Padre Island Brewing for hosting and Karla’s Catering for the pastries. Traffic Management Plan for
36th Annual Longest Causeway Run & Fitness Walk

South Padre Island is excited to welcome back the 36th Annual 2020 Longest Causeway
Run & Fitness Walk. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020.

The South Padre Island Police Department along with other City departments will be
working together to manage crowds and traffic control. Cones will be placed in areas to enhance the flow of traffic. 

“Public safety is our number one priority,” said Claudine O’Carroll, Police chief. “We want
to ensure the participants and visitors enjoy this event.”  

Expect traffic delays before and after the event. The run/walk will begin at 8 a.m.
Participants will travel eastbound from the Port Isabel Community Center and will
continue across the Queen Isabella Memorial Bridge, ending at 2305 Laguna Blvd. The
tail-escort emergency vehicle will be available until the end of the event. 

The City will place traffic cones on the roadway to direct traffic movement and to minimize delays. The locations of the traffic control barrels/cones are as follows:


1. The participants will begin from the Port Isabel Community Center and continue towards the Island in the outside/right westbound lane on the Queen Isabella Memorial Bridge.

2. Upon exiting the Queen Isabella Memorial Bridge, participants will turn left on
Park Road 100 and continue north along Padre Boulevard then turn left on West Atol Street. 

3. Participants will then head south on Laguna Boulevard to the finish line at


1. All westbound traffic will be directed to the inside/left lane using cones and traffic personnel. 

2. All eastbound traffic will be unobstructed.

3. Estimated time for the temporary lane closures: 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.

4. A tail-escort of emergency vehicles will be available until the end of the event. 
Christmas Tree Recycling Available 

The City of South Padre Island Environmental Health Services Department would like to remind the community that Christmas trees can be dropped every Saturday, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. from Dec. 28, 2019, to Feb. 8, 2020,
at 4501 Padre Boulevard . In addition to the drop-off location, South Padre Island residents may place their tree curbside anytime until Feb. 8, 2020.

Recycled trees will be turned into mulch that can be used in gardens to safeguard plants from winter weather. Please remove all ornaments, lights, nails and tree
stands before recycling.  

Mulch will be available for free on a first-come, first-served basis at the City of
hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please bring your own
tools and storage containers for loading and transporting the mulch.

“Using mulch during the winter months will help conserve moisture in the soil, provide warmth and protect the roots from freezing,” said Victor Baldovinos, Environmental Health director. “Winter mulches are typically applied heavily in the fall and then removed in the spring when the weather warms up.”
