Better Late Than Never: California Adopts Groundbreaking Reforms to California

Private Attorneys' General Act

By Gregory Blueford, Partner, Fisher Phillips

On July 1, 2024, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed groundbreaking legislation that will provide immediate and significant reform to California Private Attorneys’ General Act – also known as PAGA – and offered much-needed relief to employers. After a realization that a PAGA-related proposition set to appear on the November 2024 ballot which sought to end PAGA outright would likely fail, lawmakers sought a compromise with the labor advocates and business groups on revisions to PAGA. This legislation will limit the types of employees who could bring claims, give employers a better chance to cure mistakes, reduce possible penalties, and boost procedural mechanisms that would reduce claims in court.

Webinar | SB553

Wednesday, July 17, 2024 | 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

California organizations need to be aware that SB 553, effective July 1, 2024, mandates comprehensive workplace violence prevention plans for almost everyone. This new law requires businesses to implement policies and procedures to protect employees from workplace violence, training for employees on how to recognize and respond to violent situations, and a clear system for reporting incidents.

Unfortunately, you cannot rely on a generic workplace violence training program to comply with SB 553 because the law mandates a tailored approach that addresses the specific risks and needs of each workplace.

Safe Choice Security offers Workplace Violence Policy, Prevention Plan and WPV log, in compliance with SB 553 legislation. Our team will meet with stakeholders to ensure policy and plan is developed to meet specific needs and processes of the organization.

Summer Job Postings Are Down, While Internships Fare Worse

Summer job postings are below where they were a year ago, according to data from Indeed.

As of May—typically the peak for summer job ads—postings were down 16.9% from 2023 and down 28% from 2022.

“Summer job postings are highly seasonal, typically starting to rise in April before peaking later in that month or early May, and then declining throughout the summer,” said Nick Bunker, economic research director for North America at the Indeed Hiring Lab.

“The market peaked this year on April 29 at a relatively low level, some 10% below the 2023 peak and 11.6% lower than the peak in 2022,” Bunker said. “But even if the summer job market has cooled compared to recent history, employer demand for these jobs remains elevated compared to pre-pandemic levels.”
