AUGUST
2023
Dear Staff,

We hope that you are enjoying your summer so far. The past month has been a very exciting one for our organization and the entire IDD community. In July, we celebrated the 33rd anniversary of the signing of the American's with Disabilities Act (ADA) which provided monumental changes for the IDD community in our country. As a community, we celebrate this terrific milestone knowing that the work is far from over. On July 26, the date of the historic signing of the ADA, OPWDD announced their newest anti-stigma campaign, Look Beyond My Developmental Disability, which seeks to combat stigma towards people with developmental disabilities by asking everyone to look beyond the disability and see the person for all that they are – our neighbor, friend, co-worker, business owner and more. We are proud to participate in this important campaign and encourage all to visit OPWDD's website to learn more.

In this edition of Limelight you will also see a video from OPWDD for this campaign. Please share this message and help others to #lookbeyond, receive more information on upcoming Food Truck Fridays and receive other updates from around the agency.

Sincerely,

Rob, Kim, Gerard and Anne Marie

Robert Ciatto, President/CEO
Kim Leonard, Chief Financial Officer
Gerard DiMuro, Chief Administrative Officer
Anne Marie Sime, Chief Program Officer

Summer Snacks at Syosset IRA (pictured above)
In July, Dietitian Minerva Kim worked with some of the residents at the Syosset home to create some delicious and nutritious snacks! First was 'Ants on a Log,' which is celery sticks spread with almond butter and topped with raisins. Second was a strawberry, banana, and blueberry smoothie with low-fat Greek yogurt. Everyone enjoyed helping out and commented on how healthy & delicious the snacks were! Special thanks to Minerva for putting this together.
