AHA, Kaufman Hall release report on mergers and acquisitions

A new report from Kaufman Hall prepared for the AHA highlights new insights and data on hospital mergers and acquisitions. The report discusses how hospital merger reviews should look beyond the potential impact on commercial insurance prices and consider what proposed transactions mean for all patients, particularly the nearly 60% of hospital patient days attributable to Medicare, Medicaid and Medicare Advantage beneficiaries whose payment rates are largely set by government programs.

Intermountain Health, Surgery Partners complete $797M hospital deal

Intermountain Health has finalized its agreement to acquire interests in two Idaho hospitals, including their real estate and their affiliated clinics, according to Fierce Healthcare. Intermountain owned the 88-bed Idaho Falls Community Hospital and the 38-bed Mountain View Hospital jointly since 2023 alongside healthcare services company Surgery Partners and a group of physicians. Intermountain Health is now the sole owner of the former facility and controls a larger share of the latter. Surgery Partners said it in a statement, according to Fierce Healthcare, that it received $797 million in gross proceeds and $587 million in net cash proceeds, with the deal valuing the facilities at roughly $1.15 billion.

CMS announces expansion of ACCESS Model

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Sept. 15 announced an expansion of its outcome-aligned payment model offering technology-supported care to individuals with Original Medicare. The Advancing Chronic Care with Effective Scalable Solutions Model, or ACCESS, will now offer care options to beneficiaries with heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, substance use disorders and nicotine dependence, according to The American Hospital Association. CMS said the new condition tracks will begin in spring 2027. The voluntary model currently provides options to manage common chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic pain and depression.

HHS launches first ever department-wide PPE demand forecast

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Financial Resources (ASFR), announced a new Department-wide policy establishing the HHS Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Forecast. This is the first official, recurring process to identify, consolidate, and publish anticipated HHS purchases of personal protective equipment covered by the Make PPE in America Act.
