The final $175 billion NYS budget passed early on April 1, 2019, and included big-ticket items including bail reform, congestion pricing, a permanent property tax cap, and a ban on single-use plastic bags. In the areas of housing and human services, the final budget reflected largely what was proposed by the Governor in January. The Network offered an analysis of what was relevant for supportive housing...

“We have a cure for homelessness,” said Dr. Mitchell Katz, President and CEO of New York City Health + Hospitals, the city’s public hospital system, on April 3rd. “It’s called a home. It’s 100 percent effective; it has no side-effects. The important question is, now that we’ve proven that we can do it, how can we do a lot more of it?”

On March 14th, city, county, and state officials joined Network member DePaul to celebrate the opening of the Skybird Landing Apartments in Geneseo, a National Historic Landmark Village in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Named to honor Geneseo’s National Warplane Museum, Skybird Landing consists of 60 affordable and supportive one- and two-bedroom apartments spread across six new buildings...

On April 16th, the Network joined member Services for the UnderServed (SUS) to celebrate the transformation of a vacant lot in the Bronx into a seven-story apartment building – and the transformation of lives through the offer of permanent homes...

Where a Catholic parish church once stood, Catholic Charities opened St. Augustine Terrace, an affordable housing apartment that includes 35 units of supportive housing served by the Beacon of Hope division of Catholic Charities Community Services .

On April 11th, the Network joined the supportive housing community for the 2019 Annual Meeting. An open bar, passed hors d’oeuvres, and images of supportive housing buildings newly opened in the last year set the scene for lively conversation with familiar and new faces. The group was able to hear from Senator Brian Kavanagh, Network Board Chair Brenda Rosen, Network Board Treasurer Ralph Fasano, and Executive Director Laura Mascuch...

On the morning of April 9th, 22 Network members gathered to learn more about the art of siting supportive housing. The workshop included presentations from Cynthia Stuart, the Network’s Chief Operating Officer, and Ralph Fasano, Executive Director of Concern for Independent Living , extensive discussion among members and an opportunity to examine and respond to fictional siting scenarios...

CUCS Institute has tailored this year's trainings to the supportive housing community's needs. All trainings are available to Network members at discounted rates ($76 for full day trainings as opposed to $95). Note: There are no Network-discounted trainings in May.
