As we reach the midpoint of August, summer is already beginning to fade, and a new school year is just around the corner. On Monday, August 17, students across the Vallejo City Unified School District will return for the 2026–2027 school year. With classes resuming, morning traffic will increase and more young people will be walking to and from school. Please stay alert, drive carefully, and help keep our community safe.

Mare Island Bridge Update
Repair work on the Mare Island Causeway Bridge continues to experience temporary delays due to nearby nesting activity from the California Black Rail, a threatened native species. The birds’ nesting season concludes at the end of this month, and full work operations will resume on September 1.

Westbound Carquinez Bridge (Al Zampa Memorial) to be closed August 21-24
Caltrans is planning a rehabilitation of the I-80 Westbound Carquinez (Al Zampa) Bridge Deck. This will result in a weekend closure of the bridge, August 21-24, 2026.

Costco Project Update
Construction on the new Costco is moving full speed ahead and remains right on schedule. Current projections show the store opening well before Christmas, giving shoppers plenty of time to enjoy it during the holiday season. The on‑site gas station is expected to open a few weeks earlier, offering convenient fuel access ahead of the main grand opening. More updates will be shared as the project continues to progress—stay tuned!

Vallejo’s Brownfield Assessment Project Moves Forward
The City of Vallejo has selected SOCOTEC (formerly Ninyo & Moore) to support environmental assessment and reuse planning for priority brownfield sites on Mare Island and along the Downtown Waterfront.
Funded by a $500,000 U.S. EPA Brownsfields Community-Wide Assessment Grant, this project is an important first step towards creating new possibilities for underused properties and supporting Vallejo’s community and economy.
