Fall 2022
National Read to Child Day - October 20, 2022
Today is National Read to a Child Day, a day that is dedicated to raising awareness about the children's literacy crisis and inspiring people to share the joy of reading to a child. The devastating effects of learning loss and isolation wrought by the pandemic have been felt by children across the country leading directly to the greatest reading score decline in 30 years. This decline, coupled with significant social and emotional challenges, has had the greatest impact on the under-served communities where Read to a Child operates our Read Aloud Mentoring Program.

On Read to a Child Day you can show your support by signing up to be a volunteer reading mentor (either virtual or in-person) or donating to help expand our program. The children in our program need us now more than ever and research clearly shows literacy gains from the read-aloud process AND socio-emotional improvements from being mentored by a caring adult.

To help raise awareness for the power of reading aloud, we've continued our partnership with the amazing folks at Rebel Girls and have produced a video with volunteer mentors reading aloud to commemorate the day. If you can't volunteer or donate, simply pick up a book, read to a child, and help foster a love of reading in children across the country!
