Read to a Child Donor Feature:

Mark and Jeri Tarini

For more than 10 years, Mark and Jeri Tarini have been major supporters of Read to a Child and we are pleased to recognize them for their dedication to the Read Aloud Mentoring Program in Greater Boston. When Mark's company, ArcLight Capital, began supporting Read to a Child in 2014, Mark began volunteering in the program as a reading mentor at the Tobin School in Roxbury and continues to visit the Tobin School weekly to read to his buddy today. Inspired by Mark's experience in the program, Jeri signed on as a volunteer reading mentor in 2020 and has been reading at the Brophy School in Framingham each week since then.

Mark has served as Chair on both the Boston and National boards, and is currently a Greater Boston Board Advisor. Mark and Jeri have demonstrated their commitment to the students they serve over their years as volunteers, and have extended that commitment to other students in Greater Boston by providing vital funds to support the program both personally, through ArcLight Capital, and through sharing their experiences with many friends and colleagues who are now reading in the program themselves.

ArcLight Capital continues to be a Visionary partner, supporting the program with more than $50,000 annually. It is with Mark's excellent advocacy for Read to a Child that ArcLight has continued to support our Greater Boston programming for over 10 years. We are grateful to Mark and Jeri for their instrumental support as donors, volunteers, and advocates for Read to a Child. It is with their support that we are able to continue bringing the Read Aloud Mentoring Program to the students who need it most!

Kate Beattie, partner at Foley & Lardner LLP, has been a champion of Read to a Child in Greater Boston since joining the regional board in 2011.  In 2022, Kate became the Boston Board Chair and soon after joined the National Board in 2023.  Kate has been a dedicated leader, bringing in critical funding to support the Read Aloud Mentoring Program and was honored with Read to a Child's Literacy Champion Award in September of 2024 in recognition of the work she has done over a decade of service. Thank you, Kate, for all you do!

Kristen Baxter joined Read to a Child in August of 2013 as Development Manager, moving up in the organization to her current role of VP of Development in 2024. Kristen has been an enormous asset to the organization, increasing funding in support of the Read Aloud Mentoring Program. As a volunteer reader herself, Kristen sees first-hand the impact that the program has on the students we serve. Her over a decade of service to Read to a Child has been instrumental in our success--we truly couldn't do it without Kristen.

Hartford Read Aloud Event with Mayor Arunan Arulampalam

On Sept. 18th, Hartford, CT Mayor Arunan Arulampalam read aloud two Dr. Seuss classics to an eager class of second graders at the Annie Fisher STEM school, a Read to a Child partner school in Hartford. It was a heartwarming event, and the Mayor took great care and time to connect with each of the second grade students.

Also in attendance was James Woulfe (Mayor's Chief of Staff), Christopher Marcelli (Assistant Director Of Hartford's Dept of Children, Youth, and Families), Dr. Albert Sackey (Asst. Superintendent for Teaching and Learning at HPS), Dwight Thompson (Exec. Director of Instruction, School Improvement, and Innovation at HPS), and other Read to a Child stakeholders including staff, volunteers, and Board members.

Tee'd Up for a Cause in Hartford

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont, John Byrnes of AssuredPartners (and Read to a Child mentor and Board member), Greg Barats of Hartford Steam Boiler, and Michael Klein of Travelers hit the greens at Hartford Golf Club!

Their game was in support of Read to a Child's Read Aloud Mentoring Program in Greater Hartford--driving change one swing at a time. Huge thanks to our golf foursome who made literacy the real winner of the day!
