Your Monthly News & Updates - May 2019
Note from our Executive Director

"I think it's the books that we read when you're young that live with you forever." - J.K. Rowling

Every month I try to find a quote by a person of note that I believe, if I were ever fortunate enough to have dinner with, would totally endorse the mission of San Antonio Youth Literacy and the necessity of books and reading to humanity. This person would appreciate that by helping children with their reading skills, building their confidence and making reading easier for them, enjoyment would be a natural consequence. Read more >>>

Book Buddies News

April was a very busy month at Book Buddies. Our terrific volunteers contributed more than 300 hours of sorting, counting, and boxing donated books. They were so efficient and on-task that they regularly emptied a huge container of books in a two-hour session. This is a tremendous amount of work, but our volunteers were up to the challenge.  Read more >>>

School Spotlight

Boone  Elementary

Congratulations to Boone Elementary in NISD for being SAYL's school of the month for May! Boone Elementary became a partner campus just last school year, and we have so enjoyed working with them. Site Director, Carmen Cervantes, has helped to ensure volunteers and SAYL staff have up to date reading levels and scheduling information. The second-grade team has also been very supportive of the program. Front office and library staff have been friendly and welcoming, assisting Reading Buddies in their work on campus.

Donor Spotlight

A huge THANK YOU to CPS Energy for their recent donation of $20,000. Their ongoing support to the communities in which they live, work and serve through causes that aid, empower, enrich and educate allows San Antonio Youth Literacy to continue to deliver our SAYL Reading Buddy Program to those children struggling to read on grade level. Thank you to CPS Energy for their ongoing support.
