Something to Look Forward to in May--It's the Month for Waived Permit Fees!
Every month of May, the Department of Building Inspection (DBI) waives permit review fees. The   Awning Replacement Fee Waiver program provides waived fees for the following:

  • Replacement awnings,
  • Signs on awning replacements and
  • Pedestrian level lightning

This special waiver is for the City’s small business owners during the Small Business and Building Safety Month every May.  But wait....that is not all!  Permit fees are also waived by the Fire Department and Public Works in addition to DBI and Planning permit review fees.

Qualifications for Waiver
If you are a small business, find out if you qualify for this opportunity. A small business is defined as a business with 100 or fewer employees. Permits participating in this waiver program are required to go through the standard review process with the DBI and related city agencies.

All interested small business owners interested in taking advantage of this   Awning Replacement Fee Waiver program  will need to apply to both DBI and the Planning department, as shown in the table, below.

Visit or contact DBI and Planning today to apply for your permit!

SoMa West Established as Community Benefit District
The Invest In Neighborhoods team within the Office of Economic and Workforce Development worked with SoMa West and, as a result, legislation recently passed which establishes the area as a Community Benefit District (CBD). It is now the largest of the 17 CBDs citywide, and will help ensure a welcoming , clean, and economically vibrant local community. The SoMa West CBD was formed after a majority vote was cast by property owners in the area. It will raise approximately $3.74 million per year in special assessments from those properties to carry out its management plan over the next 15 years. The boundaries of the District include approximately 2,765 parcels located on approximately 100 blocks. Read more…

Harvest greens to take home from our living mural wall and discover how gardening and art-making can be the means of growing a compassion-based culture.

The Giving Wall , a living plant-based mural by Village Artists-In-Residence FAABI Life Art Group, is the central inspiration for all Village Artist Corner activations in the spring. On first Sundays through May 31, stop by the corner to decorate a canvas bag and use it to harvest some of the plants from the mural to take home. Along with the artists, leaders from local community gardens will demonstrate the seeding, harvesting and gathering of greens so that the community can easily replicate the process wherever they wish. Reseeding of the mural will occur each first Sunday; in-between seeding and sprouting, there will be a sketched mural on plexiglass that everyone will be invited to color while it’s up.  FAABI Life Art Group’s aim is to show the how simple gardening and art-making can be the means of growing a compassion-based culture. Other surprise multisensory experiences will take place each first Sunday alongside the mural and food preparation.

Mission Asset Fund Summit: Transcend, Evolve, Take Flight
April 4-5, 2019

This multi-disciplinary national conference unites the asset-building, tech, philanthropy, and immigration advocacy fields. A two-day event, with 50+ speakers and 300+ attendees from across the U.S., will bring innovators together to uplift community-based solutions addressing some of the most pressing issues facing America today.

Why “Transcend, Evolve, and Take Flight”? Because we are living in a state of emergency in America. The very foundations of our society, the norms, and stories that bind us together are under attack. But there is hope. As advocates and social change warriors, we have work to do. We need a space to co-create and uplift solutions that work for low-income and immigrant communities. Register here
