SMSDC News                           November 2018
From the President's Desk

My sincerest thanks to all who attended the 2018 NMSDC Conference & Business Opportunity Fair in Austin, TX, October 14-17 in Austin, TX.

For more than four days, more than 6,000 corporate CEOs, procurement executives and supplier diversity professionals from the top multinational companies, as well as leading Asian, Black, Hispanic and Native American business owners, veterans associations and international organizations convened and experienced "The Global Stage for Innovation & Impact" this year's theme for NMSDC's Conference and Business Opportunity Fair. The nation's premier forum on minority supplier development.  SMSDC was proud and excited to be co-host of this grand event!

The one-day Business Opportunity Exchange was extraordinary with more than 700 exhibit booths. Corporations and MBEs showcased their products, services and solutions while establishing collaborative business relationships and ongoing networking. Chief procurement officers and seasoned minority business executives engaged in thought provoking panel discussions on not just "best practices" but proactive practices on how we are going to collaborate to build and operate supplier diversity in the future. Matchmaker sessions featured corporations with buyers, sourcing managers and procurement experts participating in up-close and One-on-One Matchmaker Sessions with NMSDC certified MBEs willing and ready to fulfill the needs of upcoming opportunities.

Empowering workshops including the MBE Opportunity Accelerator: Transformation Ahead;  Monday Power Breakfast, "The Champion's Huddle" with dynamic speaker and NFL legend, Emmitt Smith; Getting in the Zones...Opportunity Zones; Linking Supplier Diversity to Corporate Goals; The History and Evolution of Supplier Diversity; A Different Future: For Minorities in the U.S. Economy; provided invaluable information on the latest trends, history and opportunities to connect and move your business forward.

CONGRATULATIONS to all of the Awards Banquet winners!  Congratulations to NMSDC's Casilda Del Valle  - VP, Finance & Administration for winning the  The Harriet R. Michel Award and a special congratulations to the Georgia Minority Supplier Development Council (GMSDC) for winning Council of the Year!

If you did not have the opportunity to attend the national conference in Austin, please take a look at our photo gallery.  We hope to see you at one of our regional Year-End Celebration events taking place in December.

Sincerely,
President/CEO

ADVOCATE
From your MBEIC Chair:
Dear SMSDC MBEs,

Did you feel the energy? NMSDC's 2018 Conference was not only a Southwest Region-size success but was also charged with an abundance of opportunities to develop ourselves, connect, and SO MUCH more. Starting with awards as early as Saturday evening and impactful sessions on Sunday, and kickoff networking sessions; the entir e conference was a value loaded convergence of supplier diversity professionals, organizations and MBES.

If you made it to the Conference, Hats off to you! If not... What did you miss? The Opportunity Accelerator sessions on Sunday brought in the first chance for Adrienne Trimble, our newly elected NMSDC President and CEO who eloquently talked about where efforts and goals will focus by building and developing NMSDC's infrastructure, having a more unified council network, leveraging our network and getting on the digital transformation train, are some of the means by which NMSDC will increase its national and global positioning and presence. Adrienne also made it a point to share with attendees what she would like legacy to NMSDC to be, which is job and skills development.

Other Sunday sessions included "The Customers Next to You", by Clifford A. Bailey, the Chair for the National MBE Input Committee, reminding us to do business with other MBEs; "Disrupting Your Business Before Someone Else Does", by David Kadio-Morokro; "Transformational Results from the Inside Out" and "The Adaptable Leader" by Vicki Shillington and Vips Kapadia form ThinkShift; and Accelerating Access to Government Markets by Nisha Sharma, Verizon and Laketa Henderson from the SBA, delivered relevant and practical advice and access to resources to increase your chances to obtain government opportunities through multiple channels.

This year as every year, NMSDC Matchmaker offered the chance to talk opportunities between Corporations and Tier 1 companies and MBEs with synergies; which along with the great diversity of workshops and bootcamps, and even one-on-one coaching sessions-to include improving your sales pitch to leadership and motivation of your most valuable assets: Your Team Members, to collaboration and positioning our businesses for success from every angle; made it worth every last cent of our investment to be there, and offered many more opportunities to take advantage of, that what we could ever consume in just a few days!

The unique Business Opportunity Exchange Expo with thousands of professionals at our hand to meet and introduce our businesses to and find out what their supply chain pipeline has forecasted, opened the doors to us MBEs to opportunity and success. The awards and recognition presented to MBES and corporations at all levels was an evening gala which reminded us of Hollywood. One of the stars recognized with the Development Award was Toyota. Randy Anderson received the award. Congratulations!

I hope for those MBEs who made it that we follow up on those connections we made, put into practice what we just learned or continue exploring and learning about the topics that picked our interest. For those of you who were not able to join us, continue to stay connected and try to make it to other events as they come up... and be sure to join us next year for NMSDC 2019 in Atlanta.

Your SMSDC MBEIC Chair,
Beatriz Fernandez

NFL Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith makes run at business world

AUSTIN (KXAN) - NFL Hall of Famer and former Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith only runs businesses these days.

Smith spoke in Austin Monday at a conference for the National Minority Supplier Development Council.
After a 15-year career in the NFL, Smith has attacked the business world much like he attacked holes in opposing NFL defenses, building several successful ventures.
"I had to learn how to become a good blocker so I could be there on first, second, and third down, and not allow the defense to key on me on just running downs. That means I can run the ball, catch the ball and block too. So the diversity of a running back was extremely paramount to the success of who I was as a Dallas Cowboy. I look at that the same way in business," Smith said.
Smith's latest business endeavor is a chain of high-end barbershops. He is currently involved in several real estate and construction projections and has a specific interest in Austin.

"There's a lot here, so tapping into this network is paramount for success," Smith said.
As for advice for potential business owners, Smith says to tackle every opportunity.
"Just because you start in a place doesn't necessarily mean you end in the same place. Opportunities are all over the place and you've just got to figure out how to tap into those things and have the bandwidth to execute whatever game plan you have," Smith said.

The Importance of NOT Letting your
SMSDC Certification Expire!

We frequently receive frustrating calls by our MBEs telling us their SMSDC/HUB Certification has expired. Once your SMSDC certification expires, ALL MBEs have to begin the entire certification process from the beginning. Please note, WE NO LONGER ACCEPT PAPER APPLICATIONS. ALL certification is now done on-line. There are no exceptions.

For those MBEs in the STATE OF TEXAS, in addition to beginning the entire certification process all over again, the HUB certification, which enables you to bid on contracts, is no longer valid. The HUB certification process is only done once a month. This means for those MBEs in the State of Texas, they will now have to wait an entire month for their HUB certification.

Please make sure to check the expiration date on your SMSDC certification. You will receive an e-mail notification from the AdaptOne portal which looks similar to the image above.

DO NOT ignore this e-mail. It is a courtesy reminder your certification is about to expire.

Please contact Gabrielle Ramirez at gabrielle@smsdc.org
