SMSDC NEWS
November 2017
From the President's Desk:

Karen Box
SMSDC President & CEO

For more than four days, more than 6,000 corporate CEOs, procurement executives and supplier diversity professionals from the top multinational companies, as well as leading Asian, Black, Hispanic and Native American business owners, veterans associations and international organizations convened and experienced "Minority Supplier Development: Fueling Economic Growth" this year's theme for NMSDC's Conference and Business Opportunity Fair. This is the nation's premier forum on minority supplier development.

According to Joe Hinrichs, NMSDC Chair and President, Global Operations at Ford Motor Company and a featured speaker, the 2017 Conference and Business Opportunity Exchange will focus on "propelling the economic growth for corporate executives and minority business owners to take advantage of opportunities for commerce presented in the future. As the U.S. nears the point where minorities comprise greater than 50 percent of the population, the need for strong minority-owned businesses in national and global supply chains will be vital to the health of our growing economy".

The one-day Business Opportunity Exchange was extraordinary with more than 700 exhibit booths. Corporations and MBEs showcased their products, services and solutions while establishing collaborative business relationships and ongoing networking. Chief procurement officers and seasoned minority business executives engaged in thought provoking panel discussions on not just "best practices" but proactive practices on how we are going to collaborate to build and operate supplier diversity in the future. Matchmaker sessions (by appointment only) featured corporations with buyers, sourcing managers and procurement experts participating in up-close and One-on-One Matchmaker Sessions with NMSDC certified MBEs w  illing and ready to fulfill the needs of upcoming opportunities. Empowering workshops including the MBE Opportunity Accelerator: Connect to Opportunities; Winning Federal Contracts; Going Global: New Markets for Minority Business Enterprises; Hurricane Disaster Recovery and Rebuilding Opportunities; provided invaluable information on the latest trends, tips and opportunities to connect and move your business forward.

If you did not have the opportunity to go to Detroit, then please mark your calendars for October 14-17, 2018 when the NMSDC Conference comes to Austin, TX. We know you will not want to miss this dynamic conference.

2017 MBE Idol Winner!
Debbie Trevino, President/CEO, Treco Services
Shares her story....

I would like to thank SMSDC and Dell for putting together the MBE Idol. It was a great opportunity as an MBE/WBE to be in front of judges from the corporate world and being able to drive to Austin and compete in front of judges from the Dell procurement office.

Treco Services Inc. has been a member of SMSDC since 2005 and has been in business in the service industry for 34 years providing janitorial services, pressure washing, window cleaning, floor and carpet care services as well as facility maintenance. Having been asked to compete in the MBE Idol was an honor. This was an amazing opportunity to utilize the grading forms to strengthen our story about our services but most of all being able to evaluate how to improve our presentation in selling what we believe in, and that is our employees and clients.

Being certified through SMSDC and being involved in the different events that are provided to the members allows us to grow our companies as well as network with other MBEs. As we build our relationship with companies like Dell, it opens doors to bring in an MBE that can be a part of a new contract and offer great opportunities.

Being selected as the winner of the MBE Idol and taking the recommendations in building my PowerPoint presentation, I will use this opportunity to set up with other large corporations and share my story and allow them to see how Treco Services can be a tremendous asset to their service industry.

Other members of the SMSDC no matter how long they have been in business, should take the opportunity and compete for the 2018 MBE IDOL. It is a learning experience and can be a GREAT achievement to accomplish. As they say you're never too old to learn.

Being in business for 34 years and having been given this wonderful experience you do get a lot of butterflies in your stomach but it takes you tremendously out of your comfort zone which for me was knowing that there were areas that I needed improvement in and being judged by what I presented allowed me to make the corrections and reevaluate how I presented myself and my company. Knowing that there were only two companies and myself gives you the extra push and confidence you need to give it your best.

We were successful in being the winners with the MBE Idol and now we will take this wonderful achievement and apply the success in continuing to grow great opportunities with corporations that believe in what SMSDC is doing for women owned minorities and small business owners.

The Importance of NOT Letting your
SMSDC Certification Expire!
We frequently receive frustrating calls by our MBEs telling us their SMSDC/HUB Certification has expired. Once your SMSDC certification expires, ALL MBEs have to begin the entire certification process from the beginning. Please note, WE NO LONGER ACCEPT PAPER APPLICATIONS. ALL certification is now done on-line. There are no exceptions.

For those MBEs in the STATE OF TEXAS, in addition to beginning the entire certification process all over again, the HUB certification, which enables you to bid on contracts, is no longer valid. The HUB certification process is only done once a month. This means for those MBEs in the State of Texas, they will now have to wait an entire month for their HUB certification.

Please make sure to check the expiration date on your SMSDC certification. You will receive an e-mail notification from the AdaptOne portal which looks similar to this:

DO NOT ignore this e-mail.
It is a courtesy reminder your certification is about to expire.
Please contact Eduardo Muniz-Fraticelli at [email protected] .

47% Of Supplier Collaborations Fail: Build Trust Or Expect Failure

Jonathan Webb, Contributor

Supplier relationship management  is difficult to get right. Our new research in Procurement Leaders finds that roughly half of supplier collaborations fail.
Previous studies have identified difficulties in extracting value from supplier initiatives, but few provide probabilities of success.

To calculate this figure we asked 480 procurement executives from a range of geographies and sectors about their experiences in collaboration.

Supplier collaborations are special relationships between a buyer and supplier where the two look to co-operate to achieve a specified goal or deepen their long-term working patterns. These close relationships can deliver a variety of benefits from new product innovations, to incremental efficiencies, to a richer flow of data.

These are partnerships that exist in a buying organization's ' supplier relationship management' program. That is a company's policies, procedures and frameworks that guide its staff in managing external relationships.

Only 53% of supplier collaborations are successful. Worrying for those in the supply chain profession, the proportion of successful collaborations falls to 51% when a formal SRM program is in place.

This produces a troubling conclusion that suggests that it is better not to have an SRM framework to conduct collaborations.
