SMSDC NEWS
October 2017
From the President's Desk:

Our sincere thanks to all of our sponsors and attendees whom participated in our 3 regional events: Premier Face Time in San Antonio, TX; New Frontier in Oklahoma City, OK & Diversity at the Border in El Paso, TX.

Each of these events offered a platform for corporate members and suppliers to discuss business opportunities in the near term.  SMSDC's dedicated board of directors and staff mapped out a diverse array of networking events,
educational seminars and connecting opportunities that drove minority businesses development forward.  We are one of a few councils whose service area covers multiple states.  For this reason, we offer matchmaking opportunities in three of our largest areas.  If you were unable to join us in 2017, we hope that you will be able to participate in 2018 as it will be a very exciting year to be a part of SMSDC.  Our 2018 calendar of events will be released soon.

As we enter our 4th quarter, we begin planning our end of year celebrations throughout our service area.  Please stay tuned to your local Regional Task Force for planning of your local end of year gathering.  It is now time to celebrate another great year!

I'd like to take this opportunity to invite all of our certified MBEs to two exciting upcoming events.  NMSDC's 2017 Conference & Business Opportunity Fair, "Fueling Economic Growth", will take place October 22-25 in Detroit, Michigan. It is a one-of-a-kind event featuring thousands of corporate executives, procurement professionals and over 700 exhibit booths.  The four day event is filled with endless opportunities to network!  If you have not already registered, please visit the event website at www.nmsdcconference.com to learn more.

I'd also like to invite you to attend Premier Platinum Sponsor, Toyota's 28th Annual Opportunity Exchange.  The annual event will take place on Thursday, November 9th in Detroit, Michigan.  This is your opportunity to connect with Toyota Tier 1 Suppliers, gain strategic insights from diversity leaders and cultivate meaningful connections during the tradeshow.  To learn more and register, please visit www.toyotaopportunityexchange.com.

Once again, thank you all for your participation and continuous support of SMSDC.  I hope to see you all at one of our end of year celebrations and the exciting upcoming events soon.

The Importance of NOT Letting your
SMSDC Certification Expire!
We frequently receive frustrating calls by our MBEs telling us their SMSDC/HUB Certification has expired. Once your SMSDC certification expires, ALL MBEs have to begin the entire certification process from the beginning. Please note, WE NO LONGER ACCEPT PAPER APPLICATIONS. ALL certification is now done on-line. There are no exceptions.

For those MBEs in the STATE OF TEXAS, in addition to beginning the entire certification process all over again, the HUB certification, which enables you to bid on contracts, is no longer valid. The HUB certification process is only done once a month. This means for those MBEs in the State of Texas, they will now have to wait an entire month for their HUB certification.

Please make sure to check the expiration date on your SMSDC certification. You will receive an e-mail notification from the AdaptOne portal which looks similar to this:

DO NOT ignore this e-mail.
It is a courtesy reminder your certification is about to expire.
Please contact Eduardo Muniz-Fraticelli at [email protected] .

THE IMPORTANCE OF SUPPLY CHAIN DIVERSITY

RACONTEUR - July 25, 2017

Diversity has become a business buzzword in recent times, with numerous C-suite executives viewing it as simply a tick-box exercise, alas. And yet a growing welter of evidence suggests the manifold advantages of utilizing diverse supply chains - engaging suppliers from ethnic, racial and gender minorities - are too significant to be ignored.

In the UK there is much work to be done in this area, however, and in truth, when it comes to encouraging such a progressive approach, most of the world is some way behind pioneers in the United States. Indeed, the very idea of supplier diversity was triggered by the epochal American civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s.

It is little coincidence that on March 5, 1969, less than a year after the Civil Rights Act, popularly known as the Fair Housing Act, President Richard Nixon, who had taken office only six weeks earlier, signed the game-changing Executive Order 11458 that stipulated government agencies and their contractors should partner up with minority-owned companies.
It soon became apparent that to prevent fraud, rigorous third-party certification was required; hence the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) was formed in 1971 to determine which organizations qualified for minority business enterprise (MBE) status.
In the subsequent four-and-a-half decades, a cluster of other national units have been established in the US to foster growth for diverse business types and address the needs of various affinity groups, including women, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals, and those with disabilities.

And now, even though the NMSDC, which aims to "support and facilitate MBE integration into corporate and public sector supply chains" by matching in excess of 12,000 certified MBEs to its "vast network of corporate members who wish to purchase their products, services and solutions", has the likes of Apple, Google, Amazon, Walmart and more than 300 more top corporate organizations on its books, there remains a frustratingly backward-looking attitude at boardroom level, according to Joset Wright-Lacy, president of the organization.
