Wei Tao
Dr. Wei Tao is an Assistant Professor (Instructor now appointment will go into effect Mar/Apr) in the department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at BWH. Dr. Tao has been fascinated by the natural world from a very young age. When he was a little boy, he would tag along with his grandfather, an urban planner in China, to learn more about city planning in his hometown. He would often go along with him to see the different projects in construction. One time, his grandfather was designing a garden and as he witnessed the process of the garden being built, he was excited to learn how various and distinct kinds of plants turned from small seeds into tall blooming trees or beautiful flowers. This introduction to horticulture sparked an interest in learning more about the natural world. He soon became interested in the how and why of the science behind these changes. From elementary school onward, he acted as a “detective” enthusiastically working to understand the mysteries of the natural world. He was always keen to address the questions regarding why these phenomena occur and how things work. As a child he remembers his favorite book being “One Hundred Thousand Whys”, different from the other kids his age in China that were reading fiction or comic books.

In college he was able to pursue his passion for scientific investigation as a research assistant. After receiving his first-class honors bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering, he went directly into a Ph.D. Program at Tsinghua University. While pursuing his Ph.D., he was fortunate to have the opportunity to join one of the world’s leading laboratories in the field of biomaterials and drug delivery as a visiting Ph.D. student with a scholarship. In just six months, the training he received had an extraordinary impact on his career development. In particular, his experience with Dr. Omid Farokhzad’s team significantly influenced his Ph.D. training and brightened his career path. 

That formative experience prompted him to re-join the Center for Nanomedicine as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. He is regarded as an expert in the field of bionanotechnology, with an emphasis on nanomaterials, nanomedicine, imaging, and nano-bio interactions. His research involves a highly interdisciplinary combination of polymer synthesis, nanoparticle (NP) design and development, two dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, nano-cell interaction, intracellular trafficking, phototherapy, bioimaging, as well as drug/siRNA/protein delivery. He has had great success in gaining funding for his innovative and groundbreaking research from the U.S. METAvivor Early Career Investigator Award, BWH Anaesthesia Department Basic Scientist Grant, Center for Nanomedicine Research Fund, Khoury Innovation Award and American Heart Association (AHA) Collaborative Sciences Award. In addition, he has authored >50 articles in high impact journals including Science Translational Medicine, Nature Biomedical Engineering, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Angewandte Chemie, Advanced Science, ACS Nano, Nano Letters, and Chemical Society Reviews.

Outside of the lab, Dr. Tao enjoys throwing a barbecue party on weekends and field trips to theme parks as well as sharing coffee with team members and friends. His father is retired and his mother is still working at an insurance company in China. He describes his parents as very ordinary people in China; however, they are great parents. He always feels their love and encouragement as they fully support all his decisions and encourage him to choose to live his life as he wishes. He feels very lucky and grateful for his family and looks forward to connecting with them often. For hobbies, he is interested in graphic design, painting and drawing.

Kristin Schreiber, MD/PhD was chosen by the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) to be the new Chair of the IARS Mentored Research Awards (IMRA) Review Board.

The IARS Mentored Research Awards (IMRA) are intended to support investigations that will further the understanding of clinical practice in anesthesiology and related sciences.
Awards / Grants
Linda Aglio has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Program for Interdisciplinary Neuroscience (PIN) and the Women’s Brain Initiative (WBI.) 
This represents the first department Interdisciplinary Collaboration Between the Divisions of Neuroanesthesia and the Pain Management Center. Dr. Aglio is embarking on a new area of investigation that addresses the risk factors and gender disparities in opioid consumption after surgery. With her mentors Drs. Edwards and Jamison, she has assembled a novel study that will inform new ways to address the opioid challenge by better understanding gender differences in opioid consumption and spine surgery. This pilot study will investigate “ Digital Phenotyping to Monitor a CBT Pain Prevention Intervention for Women Undergoing Surgery.”
Enrollment will begin soon for an NIH-funded multi-center interventional trial (lead by George Frendl) aimed at reducing post-operative pulmonary complications.

Jim Rathmell and Rob Edwards were awarded an 11 million dollar grant to serve as co-PIs (along with Maurizio Fava at MGH and Bob Dworkin at the University of Rochester) of the Clinical Coordinating Center for the Early Phase Pain Investigation Clinical Network (EPPIC-Net), part of NIH’s HEAL initiative. EPPIC-Net is a network of academic sites around the U.S. that will collaborate on clinical trials of non-opioid treatments for acute and chronic pain.

The Clinical Coordinating Center oversees this network, designing and managing the multicenter trials. Collectively, the network aims to reduce reliance on opioids by accelerating and improving early-phase clinical trials of non-addictive treatments for pain.
