The Atlanta Hawks and District 3 Councilwoman Helen Willis Hosted A Back to School Celebration at
Welcome All Park
In the July edition of The Ready! Set! Go! Parks and Recreation Newsletter , we told you that The Atlanta Hawks would host a Back to School Celebration at Welcome All Park to help summer campers and area children get excited about the new school year!

On Thursday, August 1st, The Atlanta Hawks Community Outreach Team along with The Atlanta Hawks Cheerleaders and their mascot, Harry The Hawk, surprised area kids and summer campers with the chance to score an Atlanta Hawks backpack filled with school supplies.

Mayor William "Bill" Edwards, District 3 Councilwoman Helen Z. Willis hyped up the crowd of students, summer camp coaches, and parents with a motivating speech on the importance of doing well in school.

Our own COSF Parks and Recreation Director Tony Phillips and other children got a chance to take a picture with The Atlanta Hawks Cheerleaders. Director Phillips' longstanding partnership with The Atlanta Hawks allowed for this awesome event to happen. Thanks, Director Phillips!

The Atlanta Hawks Foundation provided activities for area kids and gave away kid-sized Atlanta Hawks basketball jerseys, basketballs, and other wristbands. Kids were also given free vision screenings and more than 25 youth received glasses to help them see better in the classroom this year.

Tennis Icon Venus Williams Visits The South Fulton Tennis Center
Kids at the South Fulton Tennis Center were beaming with excitement after meeting tennis icon Venus Williams in July. Williams surprised nearly 100 young tennis players following her visit to Atlanta to compete in the BB&T Atlanta Open.

City of South Fulton leaders welcomed Williams to the tennis center located in District 3 of the City and issued a proclamation to Williams to mark the special occasion. District 3 Councilwoman Helen Willis explained, “I hope Williams’ visit will shed light on the South Fulton Tennis Center’s need for additional funding to restore at least 24 tennis courts and to help support and develop the next generation of tennis greats.”

During William’s visit she played a few rounds of tennis with each age group at the center’s tennis courts and she instructed the young tennis hopefuls on how to improve their game. The United States Tennis Association’s (USTA) Net Generation campaign sponsored Williams’ visit to the tennis center.
