March Edition
READY! SET! GO! Is a bulletin designed to keep you the residents of the City of South Fulton informed about the programs and activities happening in the City of South Fulton's Parks and Recreations Department. No matter if you are looking for sporting activities for your children, programs to improve your own health or searching for activities for Seniors, the City's Parks and Recreation Department is Where you want to be!
Sandtown Gymnasium Lighting Project
The Parks & Recreation department completed the lighting replacement project in the Sandtown Park Gymnasium. The project, which began in early February, worked to upgrade the entire gymnasium to LED lighting.

"The lighting enhancements at the Sandtown Recreation Center are a positive step forward in our ongoing efforts to provide better services and facilities for the communities that we serve," stated Parks & Recreation Director Tony Phillips. "We look forward to additional improvements to come."

LED lighting is more energy efficient and provides better overall lighting at a lower cost. As the current standard for lighting, LED lights are up to 80% more efficient than traditional lighting such as fluorescent and incandescent lights. Additionally, 95% of the energy in LEDs is converted into light and only 5% is wasted as heat. LED lights also draw less power than traditional lighting. Less energy use reduces the demand from power plants and decreases greenhouse gas emissions.

Imlementing LED lighting at the Sandtown location and others in the future is evidence of the City's overall efforts to be efficient and green.
The Miracle League of South Fulton

The City of South Fulton Parks & Recreation Department is proud to announce the Miracle League of South Fulton 2019 Spring Season.

Burdett Park’s Senior Line Dance Program

The City of South Fulton Parks and Recreation Department offers a Senior Line Dance Program at Burdett Park.

Low impact line dancing has been
proven to ease the obstacles of aging if done weekly. It is the third most popular extra curricular activity in the world for those over the age of 50 and actively:

  • Lowers blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  • Increases mobility without joint damage
  • Increases balance control and centering
  • Increases bone mass and muscle
  • Aids in effort to lose weight
  • Eases levels of depression

The group meets on Mondays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The program is free and all seniors are welcome to attend the sessions.
COSF Youth Art Program at Burdett Park

The Youth Art Program is offered for youth ages 6-12. The program meets on the first Friday of each month. The registration fee for each participant is $15.00 per month.

"Helping our youth through art programs may be one of the most important steps we can take as individuals and as a society," stated Parks and Recreation Director Tony Phillips. "Art is a valuable tool for discovering, exploring and interpreting reality."

Program participants look forward to the next project this month.
Westlake Lady Lions Visit Sandtown 10 & Under Girls Basketball Team
On Thursday February 28th, Coach Hilda Hankerson and two of her players, Brianna “Snoop” Turnage and Lydia Freeman, from the Westlake Lady Lions Varsity Basketball team dropped by the Sandtown Recreation Center to visit the 10 & under girls basketball squad.

Both teams have a lot in common as they had undefeated basketball season. The 10U Sandtown girls were 24-0 over the last two seasons and defended their state championship from the 2018 season, and the Westlake Lady Lions were 28-0 in their current season and defended their 7A Georgia State Championship from 2018.

Coach Hankerson, “Snoop” and Lydia each talked to the younger ball players and encouraged them on the eve of their trip the following weekend to the GA Recreation & Parks Association State Tournament.

The 10U Sandtown girls finished the season at 27 -1 over two seasons, winning it all in 2018 and finishing second in the state at their age level for 2019. The Westlake Lady Lions won the 7A Georgia State Championship for the second consecutive season. The City of South Fulton is clearly home for some of the best ladies basketball in Georgia!
