Congratulations Facebook Journalism Project Grant winners!
In their first round of COVID-19 grants, announced April 7, 2020, we counted
37 successful public broadcasting stations (14 radio and 23 tv/joint licensees). Congratulations to all! We are especially happy to hear about the Grant Center members who learned of the short timeline on this grant from our members-only alerts and were able to put together an application very quickly, which resulted in full funding for their news efforts.
The second round of grants was announced May 7, 2020. This was a bigger competition, with awards of up to $100,000. We count
16 public broadcasters among the grantees (12 radio and 4 tv/joint licensees). Congratulations to all!

Funders Expect More in Addressing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Under COVID-19
MacArthur Foundation President John Palfrey discussed what the Foundation and its partners are doing to combat racism during this global pandemic, in a March 27 letter. This letter builds on the conversations in the philanthropic community led by the Ford Foundation to implement practices that advance equity and trust. One of the ideas here is that this pandemic is not hitting everyone in the same way. Instead of being a "great equalizer" as some have claimed, the COVID-19 crisis may be magnifying social inequity by hitting disadvantaged communities harder. Palfrey writes,
"Recent discussions across the sector about the need to shift our practices to focus on racial justice and power-sharing must move from idea to action. In this moment we must embody the approach of trust-based philanthropy and use a racial justice lens to appropriately respond to a crisis that is the result of structural failures, institutional negligence, and the underfunding of services for our communities."
These are words we should all listen to. Many funders are learning more about who is being hurt by the joint health and economic crisis that we are experiencing, and they may welcome or even require an approach that uses the lens of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) not just in aspirational language, but backed up by solid metrics.
Those of you who attended the most recent Facebook Journalism Project webinar for applicants in the second round may recall that applicants are required to share the demographics of their target audience, along with the demographics of their own staff and board, and if representation is lacking, applicants must submit a plan to address this. In the press release yesterday, Facebook proudly announced that "The fund is supporting many publishers who are hardest hit by this crisis: nearly 80 percent of recipients are family- or independently owned and more than half are published by or for communities of color."
In one more example of tech funders taking DEI seriously, t
he Google News Initiative, a $300 million effort to help journalism around the world thrive in the digital age, has announced and extended the deadline of the 2020 North American Challenge. This year's focus will be on "projects that generate growth and diversification of revenue for local media who elevate underrepresented audiences and promote diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) within their journalism." Funding is available for projects with a budget up to $300,000, of which Google will cover up to 70% (in other words, a match is required).
Given this emphasis from many funders, now is the time to re-examine the tools and metrics that you have to tell your own station's powerful story.
