A Letter from Our PTSA President
On behalf of all the members of the Miami Beach Senior High School PTSA, I'm happy to offer a big welcome to all incoming students and their parents, as well as all our new teachers. After being a member of Beach High PTSA for the last four years, I am honored to serve as President for the 2017-18 academic year.
I am very well aware of the importance of this position and the critical role that the PTSA plays in our school and in the lives of our students. I have seen the PTSA from many perspectives, as a Beach alum (class of 1987), parent of a recent 2017 graduate, and as parent of a member of the class of 2020. The PTSA has been and will continue to be a strong force advocating for the best for our children and helping our teachers provide the best for our students.
When my older son came to Beach High as a freshman, I remember being nervous about everything. How would he deal with having 8 periods? Would he participate in sports? How would he adjust to a completely new environment? I attended my first PTSA meeting as a parent the day after school started and immediately saw the important work the PTSA did for the school. The members shared and continue to share a common goal - the betterment of the whole school. The PTSA parents were welcoming and supportive and helped me (and my son) navigate through the first year in high school.
One of the most important things our PTSA does is communicating school dates (especially for those with children who do not do so). The PTSA keeps us informed about what goes on in the school, which can be very challenging - given the number of events, clubs, sports and extra-curricular activities that we have.
The PTSA newsletter is extremely valuable. It has all the important dates you and your children need to know, from sign-up deadlines to sports, to testing dates. When you sign up for PTSA we automatically add your email to the list to receive the PTSA newsletter. The newsletter is also available on the school website. Keeping and staying informed in high school can be a difficult challenge. We hope that we help all parents navigate their way.
Our board meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of every month from 7:30AM - 9:00AM and are open to all. I strongly encourage each of you to attend and I look forward to seeing many new faces. In addition to the board meetings, we hold 3-4 general meetings at night. Once these meetings are scheduled, their dates will be announced in the newsletter and posted on the website.
Again, welcome to all and go Hi-Tides!
Hillary Frankel

The Pre-IB Scholars Academy Orientation

Free School Supplies to Beach High
Support your school while shopping for school supplies - it doesn't cost you a penny!
Office Depot and Office Max run a charity program to support all schools. It gives 5% of your purchase to the school you designate, in free school supplies, without any additional cost to you. At the register, before paying, please ask the cashier to add the Beach High ID to your purchase in the "Give Back to Schools" program. The Beach High ID is 70022680. If you don't remember this ID number, ask the cashier to check it out for you - they have a book listing all schools. Keep in mind that new employees are not familiar with the program; in that case, please ask for a supervisor's help. Thank you for your support of our students and teachers!

The Psych Club
On Sunday, May 21, MBSH's new Psychology Club visited an event coordinated by Primary Care Haiti for children to play tennis and raise funds for humanitarian aids in Haiti.
Primary Care Haiti is a volunteer, non-faith based group of healthcare providers that was co-founded by two medical doctors, Kissinger and Jennifer Goldman. The organization's goal is to establish a sustainable Emergency Medical Infrastructure in Haiti. This is done through annual medical missions to Haiti where they provide training for healthcare providers and by providing donated medical supplies and equipment to hospitals outside of the Haitian capital.
The Psychology Club donated over 200 household and toiletry items that were collected at Beach High over a 3-week period. Our club strives to make a difference in the lives of others; we were able to do this thanks to the support from our Beach High family.

Our Honorable Dance Teacher
Congratulations to Fusion Dance Coach Anthony Wallace for receiving honorable mention at the DDS DanceTeacher Award 2017, a contest of dance teachers in Dade County.
Debate Team Excels at Nationals
Two Beach High students, Guido Dominguez and Alexander Sherer, tied for 5th place in the Nation in Public Forum Debate! In eliminations, they only lost on split decisions to the 1st and 2nd place teams. Miami Beach's other Public Forum Debate Team, Jared Stein and Tali Peretz, also made it to the elimination rounds. The NSDA named Beach High a 2017 School of Excellence in Debate based on the performance of our teams.
In the speech events, Darlene Adirika made the elimination rounds in both Program of Oral Interpretation and Prose, and Ely Martinez advanced in Story Telling. In addition, Abby Gualda, Anna-Maria Nuryasin, Ely Martinez, and Amanda Collado-Mesa competed in Duo Interpretation.
The NSDA also recognized Coach Russell Rywell with a Third Diamond Key Award.
Our students learned a great deal debating and speaking against the best in the country, but they also learned a great deal about life. They were so moved researching and debating ("Resolved: In East Africa, the United States Federal Government should prioritize its counter terrorism efforts over its humanitarian assistance") that they set up a team fundraising page for World Food Program USA to feed the victims of famine in Africa.
More Recognition for Film Students
Ms. Pierce's students were recognized at the end of the year Film Awards Festival at the Coral Gables Theater in June. The Film After School Program won the following awards:
- Best Director: Luis Garcia for Jamil and the Backpack
- Best Actor in a male role: Jamil Martinez in Jamil and the Backpack
- Sound Recording: Annabel Herrera in Jamil and the Backpack
- Editing: Elizabeth Acosta in Jamil and the Backpack
- Best Screenplay to Jamil Martinez in Jamil and the Backpack
- Best Commercial to Luis Garcia in his most creative commercial: The Smart Hat!!!!
These students worked hard in this after school program because they love films, the art of making films and obviously want to do something with film in their lives.
