Carrie Barkley could barely climb a flight of stairs.  She had been smoking for nearly 30 years and living on candy bars, soda and fast food.  Less than a year ago her whole life changed and she is grateful. We love rewarding you for getting consistent with your workouts.  We know that you realize the real reward comes with the benefits you feel when fitness is your routine in your life.  You feel less stress, more energy and hopefully excited to get up in the morning!  

Earlier this month, on Valentine's Day, we announced our 2020 BAC Rewards!  New members who get at least 20 check-ins during their first two months will get a "BAC Feels Like Home" t-shirt.  Members who earn at least 100 check-ins will get a BAC travel mug, and members who earn at least 200 check-ins will get a BAC stadium chair.

The February Sweat for a Cause was awesome! Dorothy Pintar led an Urban Mix workout and the crew raised $100 for Zonta!

In March we have two Sweat for a Cause events. One for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the other for the Alpena Public Schools Summer Institute. Details in the Group Ex box below!

Healthy Living Recipe

Gochujang Spicy Miso Chicken Burrito Bowl
Ingredients:
1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast
2 cups of prepared rice, white or brown
1 can of black beans, rinsed well and warmed
2 cups of spinach, chopped roughly
2 handfuls of pepitas
1/4 cup of shredded cheese (cojita, pepperjack, feta, etc)
Pickled jalapenos (optional)
A drizzle of Gochujang Spicy Mango sauce

Marinade:
2 TBSP honey
3 limes, juiced
3 TBSP canola oil
1 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp cumin

Combine the ingredients in a non-metal container and add the chicken. Marinate at least 30 minutes up to 4 hours in the refrigerator. Grill the chicken or cook under a broiler until internal temperature is at least 165 degrees.  Allow to chill for a couple of minutes, then chop into bite sized chunks.

Bowl assembly:
In a large, shallow bowl place 1 cup of rice, 1 cup of spinach, 1/2 cup of black beans, a handful of chicken and pepitas.  Top with cheese, jalapenos if using and drizzle of sauce. Repeat for a second bowl. Serves 2.

Change is ready when you are ready.  

In our r ecent 21 Slimdown Challenge, people across our community of all ages and stages of life got great results. 
Our recipe for success was simple. 
Eat better. Move more. Get support. Have fun. 
It worked. 

They lost weight and inches, reduced body fat, gained energy and strength and set new healthy habits. More than anything, they finished with a feeling of accomplishment. They realized that change is always possible, even in the winter, even when life is busy, even when others around us at home or work might not have the same desire. Change is still possible. 

There is no convenient time to get healthy. There is just now. As each day passes with poor health, extra weight or fatigue, it starts to just feel normal. 

Decide that you deserve a NEW normal in 2020. This crew did. 

A special shout out to Mike Sumeracki, Alan Berry, Brenda Stanton and Terri Beebe for being a
ward winners for their transformations, weight and inches lost. Mike and Terri toned their midsections. Alan lost 14.6 lbs and Brenda lost 9 inches. 

Hats off to my friend Miranda Plume who gave up her daily soda, worked out regularly and was so proud to lose 6 lbs and increase her fitness testing by more than 30 speed skaters in a minute. She's a local day care provider who definitely needs her energy! WOW!

TIPS FROM NUTRITION EDUCATOR AMANDA FREELAND
Here at BAC we don't believe in restriction. When we restrict ourselves it can cause us to feel more stressed and it can create barriers to establishing a healthy relationship with food and how we eat. However, you probably know that some foods really are just no good for us. Foods that have no nutritional value are foods that we should be eating very minimally. Not because we should restrict ourselves, but because of the adverse health effects that these foods can and will have if eaten regularly over time.  This month I want to highlight a few of these foods, not so you can cut them out all at once and all together, but so you can start being more mindful about which treats you are choosing to have throughout the week and how often.
1. Sugary packaged foods and sweets: 
  • Causes excess weight gain
  • Increased risk of diabetes and heart disease
  • Decays teeth
  • Increases stress and can take the place of important nutrients in your body

2. Soda:

  • Excess daily sugar can turn into fat in your liver
  • The daily consumption of soda can lead to an increased risk of diabetes
  • Decays teeth
  • Creates addiction and increases cravings
3. Fast Food:
  • Increased risk of obesity and stroke
  • Increased risk of heart disease and depression
  • Digestive issues
  • Headaches, bloating and puffiness
If you want to have the best quality of health that you can have from the inside out, limiting these items is key.  For sugary sweets a good guideline is to stick to two treats a week or less. Soda should be considered a treat. Even diet sodas. Fast food should be limited to twice a month or less.
If you can implement these guidelines not only will you lose weight, your digestive system will be able to function more efficiently, your heart and brain will be less stressed, your bones will be healthier and you will be able to think more clearly. You deserve to feel your best from the inside out now and all year long. Limiting these items will start you down a great path to overall better nutrition!

The 5:30pm class on Tuesday night is going to be shifting to an "Instructor's Choice" in March.  Look for a fun variety of fitness being offered that day and time this month.

URBAN BOX SUNDAY LINE UP!
Hop in an Urban Box 5pm class on Sundays in January.  Please sign up ahead of time. To maximize time on the bags, class is open to 20 people. If you sign up, please show up to be respectful to others who want to attend! The first is to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation on Friday, March 13th at 5:30pm.  Samantha Kendziorski will lead an Urban Mix workout and a donation of at least $5 is appreciated.  On Tuesday, March 24th, Cheryl Mack will lead an essential oils Yoga class at 6:30pm at Bay Urban Fitness to benefit the Alpena Public Schools Summer Institute.
