David Clay, MBE., HM Consul General hosted UK FinTech companies

UK fintech companies are in Boston this week. They are part of a delegation led by the UK Department for Business and Trade and British Consulate-General Boston, focused around Boston Fintech Week. During the week, the UK fintechs will be connecting with investors and financial services companies.
The UK is the fintech capital of Europe and attracted $3.6bn of investment in 2024 - second only to the US. 3,000 fintech firms support tens of thousands of skilled jobs across the UK.

2025 MIT AI Negotiation Summit
Artificial intelligence is often associated with areas like fraud detection, medical imaging, or contract review. But what happens when AI enters one of the most human arenas of all—negotiation?
At the 2025 MIT AI Negotiation Summit, experts from across academia and industry shared how AI is already shaping negotiation research, teaching, and practice.
“As the summit drew to a close, it became evident that the field of negotiation is on the cusp of a significant transformation,” writes Jared Curhan, MIT Sloan professor and co-chair of the event, in this recent article. “AI is emerging as both a powerful analytical tool and a pedagogical partner—reshaping how negotiation is studied, practiced, and taught.”

Trying to assess how the UK has done in its negotiations with the US is tricky, but our sense is that the outcome is about as good as it could have hoped for in the face of a radical reordering of international trade policy.
Maintaining an accurate and up to date overview of the details and implications of US trade policy as it relates to the UK has not been easy over the last few extraordinary months. In preparing notes for speaking engagements with members, I have had to revise them numerous times, and I am sure I’ll need to do so again.

Update on AI in the UK
Peter Kyle, UK Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology

"I believe AI will be the defining competitive advantage of this century. It will shape our economies, our security, and our place in the world."
Speaking at Mansion House, Tech Secretary Peter Kyle outlined how the UK is positioning itself to lead in the global AI race - not by copying others, but by innovating.
He announced:
🟢£11 million to build Britain's AI assurance industry - potentially worth £18.8 billion to our economy
🟢£2.7 million to help regulators use AI to speed up approvals whilst maintaining safety standards.
New figures published today show that British AI firms raised a record £2.9billion in investment last year and now contribute £11.8 billion to the UK economy – double the amount in 2023.
From our TechFirst programme which will bring AI learning to every secondary school child in the country to AI Growth Zones breaking ground in Culham, Wales, and Scotland - we're building the skills and infrastructure for Britain's AI future.

AI Growth Zones: open for applications
The UK government is accelerating efforts to build the infrastructure needed to support AI growth. AI Growth Zones will unlock investment in AI-enabled data centres and support infrastructure by improving access to power and providing planning support. This will help drive innovation, create high-skilled jobs, and strengthen the UK’s position as a leader in AI.

BritishAmerican Business Welcomes the State Visit
of the President of the United States to the UK

BritishAmerican Business (BAB), the leading transatlantic trade organisation welcomes the state visit of President Trump that began on September 16. Speaking on behalf of its members, BAB CEO Duncan Edwards said:
“The friendship between the US and the UK is the single most important relationship in the developed world whether measured by its security, military and intelligence partnership, or the sheer scale of the trade and investment commitments; good relations between the US and UK are crucial.
“The visit is accompanied by a number of important announcements including a new civil nuclear power partnership, major investments in the UK’s tech infrastructure and continued commitments from major US financial institutions. This is a continuation of a long-term pattern of investment across the Atlantic by US and UK companies in each other’s markets and will be welcomed by BAB members.
“As ever there is more that can be done to ensure that US investors continue to choose the UK as their preferred investment destination and to complete the negotiation of the Economic Prosperity Deal, but for now we should welcome the President and the genuine affection that he has for the UK.”

BritishAmerican Business and Bain & Co, Published the 2025 Transatlantic Confidence Index

The 5th edition of the annual index from BritishAmerican Business and Bain & Company reveals confidence in the US-UK transatlantic business corridor dropped to its lowest level since the Index began.
- UK companies’ confidence in the US business environment dropped significantly for the first time.
- UK investors worry about the US’s position on trade, approach to economic policy, and political stability.
- US investors have concerns about the UK’s growth agenda and its policies on tax and regulation.

William Kimmitt Sworn In as Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade
The International Trade Administration (ITA) announced that William Kimmitt was sworn in by Secretary Howard Lutnick on August 7, 2025 as the 17th Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade. In this role, Under Secretary Kimmitt will lead the International Trade Administration, serving as Commerce’s principal advisor on matters of trade, investment, commercial diplomacy and global competitiveness. William Kimmitt was nominated by President Donald J. Trump for the position, and the United States Senate voted to confirm him on July 29, 2025.

Last Sunday, James Normington, BABCNE Board Member and President of the British and Commonwealth Remembrance Project. organised a memorable service at Old North Church to commemorate the Battle of Britain, fought 85 years ago.
In the words of Winston Churchill:

"The gratitude of every home in our Island, in our Empire, and indeed throughout the world.., goes out to the British airmen who, undaunted by odds, unwearied in their constant challenge and mortal danger, are turning the tide of world war by their prowess and by their devotion. Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”
Prayers were read by David Clay, HM Consul General to New England, The Hon Bernadette Jordan, PC, Consul General of Canada in Boston, Commodore Nikki Thomas, OBE., Air & Space Attache’ to the British Embassy and Colonel Barry Leonard, Air & Space Attache to the Canadian Embassy.
The Revd Matthew Cadwell, PhD, gave a thoughful sermon mentioning the close relationship between the US and UK and the 10 US airmen that fought in the battle, who are listed on the memorial plaque below.
