70 Years of Progress Through Thoughtful Planning

Throughout 2026, the Village of Schaumburg is celebrating 70 years since its incorporation on March 7, 1956. Guided by the motto Progress Through Thoughtful Planning, Schaumburg has grown from a small farming community into a vibrant regional destination for residents, businesses, and visitors. Today, that same spirit continues to guide new investment, business growth, redevelopment, and transformative projects throughout the community.

Schaumburg’s transformation accelerated in the late 1960s, when Motorola constructed its headquarters on what is now the 90 North campus and the Pritzker family and Centex Corporation acquired land for what would become 390 West Gateway Park. Woodfield Mall followed, opening in 1971 with 59 stores and establishing Schaumburg as a major regional shopping destination.

By the 1980s, Schaumburg had grown to more than 53,000 residents, bringing new infrastructure and amenities to the community. The Prairie Center for the Arts, now the Al Larson Cultural Center, opened in 1986, followed by the completion of Schaumburg Towers in 1989. The following decade brought additional major developments, including Medieval Times in 1991, Woodfield Village Green in 1993, IKEA, and Roosevelt University. By 2000, Schaumburg had expanded to 19.4 square miles and a population of 75,386.

The 2000s brought continued investment, including the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center Hotel, further strengthening Schaumburg’s role as a regional hub. In the 2010s, the village began a new chapter with the redevelopment of the former Motorola campus. The North Schaumburg TIF District, established in 2014, helped support the transformation of the approximately 225-acre property into the mixed-use 90 North District. Zurich Insurance Group also established its North American headquarters in Schaumburg in 2016, adding another significant corporate investment to the community. Today, 90 North is home to Sunstar’s headquarters, Topgolf, Andretti Indoor Karting & Games, The Boler Company, and other businesses and entertainment destinations.

Looking ahead, Schaumburg’s next 10 years will bring continued growth and redevelopment, including new users in the Entertainment District, completion of the District at Veridian, relocation of Cook County’s Highway District Facility, and continued modernization of 390 West Gateway Park. As Schaumburg celebrates 70 years, the village remains committed to Progress Through Thoughtful Planning and building a community positioned for continued success.
