Established to highlight the services, programs, and dedicated professionals that keep our counties running, this month serves as a reminder of how responsive, accessible, and effective government strengthens the foundation of everyday life.

I invite students to apply for the Broward County District 7 Office Volunteer Internship Program, an opportunity to gain hands on experience in local government while supporting impactful community initiatives. Through this program, participants can contribute to public service and outreach efforts, assist with policy research, and strengthen their communication and leadership skills in a professional setting. Applicants must be currently enrolled students with strong communication abilities and availability of up to 20 hours per week. This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity, and academic credit may be available. I encourage interested students to apply or scan the provided code to learn more.

Broward County

Broward County Public Works enhances the quality of life for residents and visitors by providing essential infrastructure, maintaining critical county assets, and fostering safe, functional communities. Through an expansive network of roadways, bridges, traffic systems, and public facilities, the Division ensures reliable and accessible services for all. By overseeing construction projects, facility maintenance, and transportation improvements, the Division works to create a well-connected and efficiently managed county across Broward.

Guided by a commitment to sustainability and responsible resource management, Public Works oversees inclusive infrastructure planning and protects the long-term integrity of county systems for future generations. Initiatives such as road resurfacing programs, ADA accessibility improvements, stormwater management, and capital project development help connect people of all ages to safe and functional public spaces while supporting long-term community growth. By prioritizing smart infrastructure investment and responsive maintenance services, Public Works ensures every resident has the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of a safe, modern, and well-maintained community.

South Andrews Bridge Repairs Underway

The County's Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division will be performing bridge repairs, including replacement of the concrete bridge barrier walls, sidewalk reconstruction, and milling/resurfacing on South Andrews Avenue between Davie Boulevard and Southwest 11th Street in Fort Lauderdale (see attached map). This gas-tax funded project is scheduled to begin this month and is expected to be completed by August 2026, barring any unforeseen conditions or weather-related delays.

Work will begin on the east side (northbound lanes) of the bridge. During this phase, the outermost lane and adjacent sidewalk will be closed. A traffic shift will be implemented to maintain two open lanes of traffic at all times. Pedestrians will be diverted. Upon completion of the east side work, construction will shift to the west side (southbound lanes), where the same lane closure and pedestrian detour patterns will be implemented. Nighttime closures will be required for milling and resurfacing operations.

Drainage System Cleaning and Repairs on North Andrews Avenue

The County's Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division will also begin cleaning the drainage system and making minor repairs along North Andrews Avenue starting later this month. This work occurs between Sunrise Boulevard and Oakland Park Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors. This gas-tax-funded work is expected to be completed in August, weather permitting, and is part of the ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and reduce flooding risks.

Broward County is investing in its small businesses through the Small Business Micro-Grant Pilot Program. Eligible businesses can receive up to $5,000 in reimbursements for qualifying expenses, helping ease costs and keep operations moving. To make things easier, the County is hosting informational sessions throughout April to walk applicants through the process and requirements. The next session will be on Friday, April 17, from 10 AM to 11:30 AM at the African American Research Library & Cultural Center.

Answering the Call

Broward County is recognizing National Public Safety Telecommunications Week (April 12-18) by honoring the professionals who answer emergency calls, dispatch first responders, and provide life-saving support. On April 14, at the Broward County Commission meeting, three standout dispatchers: Sandra Bailey (Broward Sheriff’s Office), Natasha Garcia (Coral Springs), and Shanice Gordon (Plantation) will receive the Tom Gallagher Award for their excellence, leadership, and commitment to serving the community. As part of National 911 Education Month, the County's Office of Regional Communications and Technology reminds residents to use 911 for emergencies only, and that texting 911 is available when calling isn’t an option. For non-emergencies, call 954-764-HELP (4357).

NewGen Protégé Program: Opportunities for Teens Ages 12–17

Looking for ways to keep your teen active and engaged while school is out? Broward County Parks offers opportunities through its NewGen Protégé Program for youth ages 12-17. Participants can enjoy recreation, teen leagues, field trips, and life-skills programming, including resume-building, financial literacy workshops, and job fairs. The program also operates as part of Broward County Parks’ Out-of-School-Time programming, providing a safe and enriching environment for teens on weekdays from 2 PM to 6 PM through June 3 at neighborhood parks across the County.

Jazz at the Circuit: The Florida Jazz Collective

Supported by the Broward County Cultural Division, celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month with a free live jazz concert featuring The Florida Jazz Collective with special guest Charenee Wade.

Enjoy an evening of live jazz at The Circuit on Thursday, Apr 23 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, featuring a quartet of internationally touring musicians performing a mix of jazz standards and popular selections. The group includes Willerm Delisfort (piano), John Lumpkin II (drums), Nolan Nwachukwu (bass), and Aris Dolce Jr. (saxophone), joined by acclaimed vocalist Charenee Wade, whose soulful and dynamic sound brings the performance to life. City of Pembroke Pines

The Planning and Economic Development Department is responsible for coordinating the City’s housing programs available through state and federal programs. The City partners with a local vendor, Community Redevelopment Associates of Florida, Inc. (CRAFLA), to implement and process the City’s housing programs.  

• Housing Grant Programs: The City of Pembroke Pines is pleased to offer purchase assistance for very low-to-moderate-income households seeking to buy a property for use as their primary residence. Funding is available on a first-come, first-qualified basis until program funds are exhausted. Assistance comes in the form of a 0% interest deferred second loan that converts to a grant if all program conditions are met.
• Sewer Connection Grant: The City of Pembroke Pines is pleased to offer a grant program to assist low- to moderate-income homeowners who are required to connect to Broward County’s sewer system. The program is administered by Community Redevelopment Associates of Florida, Inc. (CRA) on behalf of the City. CRA will manage the intake process and review applications for eligibility. This program provides eligible Pembroke Pines residents with up to $10,000 in financial assistance to cover costs.

While this may sound like relief for homeowners, property taxes fund essential local services like public safety, parks, libraries, and infrastructure. Eliminating them could significantly impact the services residents rely on every day.

Housing Assistance Programs

The City of Miramar's Housing Division is dedicated to providing affordable, safe, and stable housing to enhance community well-being and support low- to moderate-income families in achieving economic success and a high quality of life. The city has created the following programs to aid with housing:

• First-time Homebuyer Program: This program provides down payment and closing cost assistance to very-low and low-income first-time homebuyers. The amount of assistance varies with income level and is available on a first-come, first-qualified basis until no more funding remains under the program. Assistance is in the form of a 15-year, 0% interest deferred second loan that reverts to a grant if all program conditions are met. Please contact City’s grant consultant, Community Revitalization Affiliates, Inc at (954) 939-3271 for up-to-date funding availability
• Residential Utility Connection: This program provides grant assistance up to $5,000 to connect to the City’s main sewer system. This activity benefits low income persons. This is a one-time grant provided by the City of Miramar. A second mortgage is not applied to the property.
• Rental Assistance Program: This program provides up to $8,000 to assist eligible households with the required upfront rental deposit (first and/or last month’s rent) and/or utility connection/start-ups to move into a new unit. This is a one-time grant provided by the City of Miramar and is not on-going monthly rental assistance.

Getting around Miramar is easy and free with the Mira Motion Community Shuttle. Four routes connect neighborhoods to key destinations, local attractions, and Broward County Transit, offering a convenient option for work, school, appointments, and more. All routes begin and end at the Miramar Town Center Transportation Hub.

City of Hollywood

The City of Hollywood and Broward County are committed to supporting residents through a variety of affordable housing initiatives. Both local governments offer housing assistance programs designed to increase access to safe, stable, and affordable housing. Whether you’re a first-time homebuyer or a renter facing financial hardship, there are resources available to help.

• City of Hollywood First-Time Homebuyer Purchase Assistance Program​: Qualified buyers can receive a deferred payment loan at 0% interest, 15-year term, up to $50,000 to purchase property within Hollywood's eligible Neighborhood Pride areas. • The City of Hollywood’s Rental Assistance - Eviction Prevention program, using State Housing Initiative Partnership (SHIP) funds, offers help to renters who might be on the verge of homelessness due to not being able to afford their rent. • The Housing Rehabilitation Loan is secured by a mortgage and promissory note prepared by the City. The terms of the mortgage and note are as follows: A deferred payment loan for thirty 30 years, unless the home is sold, rented, ceases to be the primary residence of the homeowner, or is transferred or conveyed by any other means. Zero (0) percent interest. The debt is payable in full on the maturity date set forth in the Mortgage that is thirty years from the date of the signing of the Promissory Note and Mortgage. Flashback Friday: A Look Back at Autism Awareness in Miramar

This week, I am reflecting on a meaningful moment from 2024, when I had the honor of serving the City of Miramar and supporting an Autism Awareness Fair at the Miramar Multi-Service Complex. The event, which welcomed over 500 participants, featured a unity walk, educational workshops, and valuable resources for families and individuals impacted by autism.

It was a powerful day of awareness, connection, and community impact — one that continues to reflect my ongoing commitment to serving residents across Broward County.

Hollywood Salsa Festival

District 7 had a wonderful time at the Hollywood Salsa Festival, a vibrant celebration welcoming salsa fans to a day filled with rumba, clave, and guaguancó. This community event brought together the very best of salsa music in all its forms, live orchestras, dynamic dance performances, DJs, and so much more. It was a fantastic showcase of culture, music, and community spirit, and we were thrilled to be part of the festivities. Thank you to the organizers and everyone who came out to make the day such a success!

Sharing County Resources at Hollybrook HOA

Engaging with our seniors where they live is so important! Here at the Hollybrook HOA meeting in Pembroke Pines, one of the larger senior communities in district 7, I was able to speak about our many County resources that are available to them, distribute informational material they can use as well as answer questions!

Highlights from Tuesday's Commission Meeting

This Tuesday’s Commission meeting was filled with meaningful tributes and recognitions that reflect the heart of our community.

I joined my fellow Commissioners and Mayor Scott Brook in honoring the late Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer — a visionary leader whose impact will not be forgotten. We presented an Expression of Sympathy and designated April 14, 2026, as “Nancy Metayer Remembrance Day” in Broward County.

I was also honored to present a Proclamation recognizing April as Autism Acceptance Month. Thank you to our community partners and organizations working tirelessly to support individuals with autism.

Additional proclamations recognized the 2026 Tom Gallagher Award recipients, Child Abuse Prevention and Volunteer Appreciation Month, and Animal Care and Control Officer Appreciation Week, celebrating the dedication of those who serve our community every day.

Visiting Arc Broward

I had the pleasure of touring Arc Broward, an incredible organization that has been empowering individuals with disabilities across our community since 1956.

Operating at nine locations with 21 programs throughout Broward County, Arc Broward provides innovative services and inclusive opportunities that help individuals live, learn, work, and thrive. Their social enterprises — Arc Educates and Arc Culinary — extend their mission even further by offering valuable community services while reinvesting in the people they serve.

Guided by their core values of Compassion, Belonging, Community, Empowerment, and Dignity, Arc Broward is truly setting the standard for excellence. Thank you to the entire team for the warm welcome and for the life-changing work you do every day for our community.

Miramar Parkway Safety Improvements Meeting

I hosted a Public Information Meeting to discuss upcoming safety improvements along Miramar Parkway, from SW 67 Terrace to SW 66 Terrace.

It was wonderful to see residents and stakeholders come out to learn more about the project and share their input. County representatives presented details on roadway safety enhancements, improved pedestrian and bicycle features, milling and resurfacing, updated pavement markings and signage, and a dedicated access road with barrier wall improvements.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the conversation. Your participation helps ensure this project truly reflects the needs of our community and makes our roads safer for everyone.

Rebel Salute USA Press Conference

I was proud to join the City of Miramar for the announcement of Rebel Salute USA — a historic celebration of reggae, culture, and positive energy coming to Miramar Regional Park this Sunday, April 19, from 2:00–10:00 PM. The event will feature a world-class lineup including Tony Rebel, Maxi Priest, and more, along with live performances, food and art villages, and a family-friendly atmosphere. I’m proud to support events that celebrate our cultural diversity—join us for a powerful day of music, unity, and community.
