Hi Friends,
Volunteers are the heart of RTMC and we were thrilled earlier this month to welcome back our first volunteer group since the start of the pandemic - see a few of our wonderful She Builds volunteers pictured above. We hope it is the first of many volunteer groups to re-engage with us. Individuals, company employee teams and faith-based groups are all welcome and we can tailor a project to fit your needs. Please reach out to me for more information.
This month we also have been celebrating National Home Improvement Month and Older Americans Month. The contributions of older adults to the communities in which we live, work and play are undeniable. RTMC is proud to provide critical home repairs and accessibility modification to many senior homeowners in need. We’re celebrating by making strides in our annual goal to serve 178 homeowners this fiscal year. I’m happy to report that we have now served 148 vulnerable homeowners across Montgomery County this fiscal year. We only have 30 more to serve by June 30th and we have a plan in place to meet our goal right on time!

This month Mat Saunders started as our new Home Assessment and Project Coordinator, reporting to Lindsay Luhn. Mat is responsible for the field oversight, execution and coordination of all home/community revitalization repair programs and services offered by RTMC. He will work in close partnership with Kristen Miller, our AmeriCorps Project Coordinator, to ensure our homeowner projects stay on schedule.
Having grown up in Montgomery County, Mat is excited to be working within and giving back to the community he grew up in. He brings several years of experience working in corporate business both in the Mid-Atlantic U.S. and abroad. Mat holds a BS in Supply Chain Management and Business Management from the University of Maryland College Park. Welcome, Mat!

Our 30th anniversary celebration is right around the corner! Rebuilding Together Montgomery County (RTMC) is ringing in 30 years of repairing homes, revitalizing communities, and rebuilding lives on June 9th from 5-8 PM at Lone Oak Farm Brewing Co., in a beautiful outdoor pavilion! She Builds ReCap and Phase II of Becky's House Coming in June |

We are thrilled to have our volunteers back in action! In partnership with the Women Building Washington Committee of ABC Metro Washington, RTMC hosted 20 women for a two-day She Builds project! On May 6th and 7th, our amazing group of female [Re]Builders were able to significantly improve the conditions at Becky’s House, a permanent residence operated by Interfaith Works for eight senior, formerly homeless senior women. Our repairs included finishing a workspace and storage area with new flooring, insulation and drywall, paint, a new HVAC system, carpentry, and landscaping. These repairs will allow residents more privacy when receiving medications or having private conversations with staff.

Special thanks to Terry Scott, Rebuilding Together’s National Program Consultant, for his helpful hands-on training sessions with the RTMC Program team.
Terry led a training on home assessment best practices for our RTMC Program Team (Lindsay, Joni and Kristen). Together, the group visited a dozen homeowners to gain hands-on home assessment skills. He has also since visited to work with Mat and help him acclimate to his new role as Home Assessment and Project Coordinator. We appreciate Terry for sharing his expertise and knowledge and leaving our team with valuable skills to revitalize our community!

Montgomery County’s population is aging – according to a Montgomery County Commission on Aging report, between 2010 and 2040, the Montgomery County senior population is projected to grow from 119,770 to 254,530, a growth of 113%! The average income for a family served by RTMC is $22,000. Housing cost burdens can put home repair and modifications out of reach for senior homeowners, jeopardizing their ability to age safely in their homes.
Team recently held a Star Ceremony to celebrate three closeouts on critical home repairs that will allow three seniors to more successfully age in place, Mr. R., Ms. M., and Ms. B. Mr. R is a veteran who received critical repairs to his roof and water system. Ms. M had several accessibility modifications to help prevent future falls after an accident. Ms. B is now feeling less stress and more comfort at home after RTMC helped with plumbing issues that were wearing away at the wooden frame of her home.
As we approach our goal of serving 178 homes before June 30th, our efforts and ability to make homes more accessible is stronger than ever!

USC and Rebuilding Together Partner To Grow Home Modification Programming |
|
Rebuilding Together has partnered with the University of Southern California’s (USC) Leonard Davis School of Gerontology to train our affiliate leaders on best practices for home modification programming. Lindsay Luhn, RTMC’s Senior Manager of Program Services, is one of forty-eight Rebuilding Together leaders who have graduated from the Executive Certificate in Home Modification program since the partnership was initiated in May, 2020. Rebuilding Together’s signature Safe at Home program provides no-cost home modifications to people with mobility issues and other disabilities to improve accessibility, reduce falls, increase independence and facilitate aging-in-place.
Lindsay found that the courses will help to grow the presence of our Safe at Home Program in the local community. “Having a better understanding of home modifications will not only help me to provide better direct services to local homeowners but will help me to advocate and create dialogue within the community,” says Luhn. Safe at Home is designed to improve aging-in-place outcomes for low-income older adults through the modification of their home environment to meet their specific needs.
