Our Mission:
Repairing Homes, Revitalizing Communities, Rebuilding Lives

A Note From Our Executive Director, Maury Peterson

Hello Friends,
Our RTMC Rebuilding Day 2021 on September 11th & 12th was a smashing success and I couldn’t be prouder and more appreciative of the 400+ volunteers who came out to help 13 families in need. More than 30 companies and faith-based groups fanned out across Montgomery County to provide critical home repairs and accessibility modifications to vulnerable homeowners. Together, we brought the Rebuilding Together mission to life: Repairing Homes, Revitalizing Communities, Rebuilding Lives.
Our volunteers truly did it all on event weekend -- they replaced siding, windows, railings, poured new steps and pads, built ramps, porches and staircases, disposed of trash, cleaned and landscaped yards, planted trees, replaced gutters, laid new sidewalks, cut down a bamboo forest, repaired plumbing, repaired electrical issues, laid new flooring, patched drywall, painted, installed new lighting and doors, installed grab bars and other assistive devices, donated materials and supplies, delivered Home Sweet Home doormats to our homeowners, and so much more. It was a real labor of love and so inspiring to see neighbors helping neighbors. Thank you to all who participated!
You can read more about RTMC Rebuilding Day and see more event day photos below. Also, please mark your calendar for National Rebuilding Day 2022: April 30 and May 1, 2022. I'll have more information about this event in the days ahead.
Next up is our Annual RTMC Golf Tournament on October 4th at Bretton Woods. Thank you to all our sponsors and volunteers. I know we will have a great day raising critical home repair funds!
As always, your partnership is much appreciated! Thank you for supporting our mission.

Helping Our Homeowners with Critical Home Repairs
|
|
Special thanks to our RTMC Program Team for their hard work to serve our homeowners. Pictured above with homeowner Ms. L. is Mat Saunders, Home Assessment and Project Coordinator, Lindsay Luhn, Senior Manager of Program Services, and Joni Keaton, Development and Communications Coordinator.
Did you know RTMC client families have an average annual income of $22,000? For most of our homeowners, once food, mortgage payments and medical care expenses are covered, there is virtually never enough left over for critical home maintenance and repairs. Any catastrophic home repair costs would mean not only the trauma of losing their home, but also the real possibility of having no place else to turn for shelter. RTMC is proud to have recently helped these homeowners who found themselves in need of critical home repairs they could not afford:
Mr. A., a senior citizen from Sandy Spring, contact RTMC after he received 26 code violations on the exterior of his home. RTMC was able to address the violations and prevent Mr. A. from incurring expensive fines. The biggest safety hazard addressed was a large deck that had fallen into disrepair and was structurally unsafe. Our partners at VAQ Renovations were able to completely refurbish the deck and make it structurally sound. They also added new stairs so Mr. A. can now access his kitchen door. Mr. A. is excited to be able to now sit on his deck, enjoy the weather and fire up his grill.
Mr. and Mrs. B. are seniors who have lived in their Olney townhouse for many years. Mr. B. recently won a battle with cancer and he works hard every day to care for his wife, who has a number of chronic health conditions. The B.’s contacted RTMC after receiving a HOA violation for moss growing on their roof. With limited funds, they were unable to afford to make any repairs. Our partners at Central Exteriors inspected the roof and determined that, due to the age and condition of the roof, it would need to be replaced. The roof was recently replaced and Mr. and Mrs. B. were able to have the HOA violation dismissed. The new roof will ensure this family stays safe and dry for years to come.
Silver Spring homeowner Ms. J. called us extremely worried about a pipe that was leaking in her wall. RTMC was able to address the problem quickly to repair the leak and replace the drywall. Ms. J. is grateful and relieved not to have to worry about her home flooding or accumulating mold and mildew.

Accessibility Modifications:
Key to a Safe & Healthy Home
|
|
RTMC was delighted to recently serve Mr. and Mrs. H., a super sweet and caring couple from Silver Spring. The H.’s contacted RTMC because they needed bathroom modifications to make a very small bathroom more accessible for Mr. H. RTMC removed the cabinets below the sink, installed grab bars and a shower chair, and reversed the direction of the door swing to give them more space. Now Mr. H. can groom himself independently without the help of Mrs. H. The modifications have greatly improved the couple's daily quality of life.
For many years, Mr. and Mrs. H. have been actively involved in giving back to their community. We were thrilled to be able to give back to them in their time of need.
