Northeast Florida RC Works to Develop

Trails and Ecotourism

In 2023, the Northeast Florida RC’s Board of Directors identified trails and ecotourism as an important opportunity for the region’s economic development. To kick-off work in this area, the Council formed a Trails and Ecotourism Steering Committee with stakeholders from across the region to collaborate and share knowledge. To compliment the work of the committee, the Northeast Florida RC created an inventory of existing GIS trail data and identified gaps in information. The Council also completed an inventory of federal and state programs that support trail development.

As a result, regional and local trains and ecotourism opportunities were identified. Projects were developed to submit to the National Park Service’s Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) program for technical assistance and capacity building. The Northeast Florida RC hosted the RTCA staff on a site visit to meet with representatives from the seven member counties to discuss potential projects the RTCA program may assist with.

The Northeast Florida RC will move into an action-oriented phase of the trails and ecotourism initiative by continuing to host the Trails and Ecotourism Steering Committee. Additionally, the Council will coordinate a regional effort to advance the concept of regional trail branding, support local ecotourism projects, and assist communities in the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Trail Town designation process.

Treasure Coast RPC Assists Indian River County and Cities

Seeking to improve communication and coordination between the Indian River County Commission and the three municipalities of Fellsmere, Sebastion, and Vero Beach, County Commission Chairman Joe Earman asked the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council to facilitate a series of meetings. The Council was engaged to facilitate as an interested and informed, yet neutral party and the work was done as part of general technical assistance provided to member local governments in the Region.

At each of the meetings, a specific list of items was discussed based on an agenda jointly created by the County and City chief administrators and in consultation with Council staff. In two of the three meetings the venue was located on “neutral ground” at County library branches. The third meeting, while held at City Hall, was not hosted in the City Council Chambers. This helped to minimize any perceptions of home field advantage and ensured equal footing for each elected body. Progress on shared concerns and a desire for future coordination was the result of each meeting. The Treasure Coast RPC looks forward to facilitating regular meetings for each jurisdiction to continue to strengthen relationships.
