Hardcover. First Edition. First Printing. 236 pp. 8vo. Scuffing to dust jacket from shelf wear, small chips at edges, 1/2" tear at head of spine along front hinge of dust jacket, 1" tear at base of lower right corner along front flap, now in mylar cover. Very clean within.

Signed by both John LaFarge and Margaret Bourke-White on the first free endpaper. Inscribed additionally by Margaret Bourke-White (1904-1971) to Eliot Elisofon (1911-1973) on the second free endpaper in year of publication, "For Eliot and Joan Merry Xmas to my beloved Elisofon family. Peggy. Xmas 1956." Elisofon was active as a photographer from 1935 through his death in 1973 and was a staff photographer/correspondent for LIFE Magazine from 1942 through 1972. Elisofon and Bourke-White would have been colleagues at LIFE Magazine. During his time with LIFE Elisofon pursued freelance projects including a deep interest in Africa and developed an interest and expertise in African Art. Elisofon also spent time as a color consultant in Hollywood. Major collections of his work are held by the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin and the Eliot Elisofon Photographic Archives at the Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art.

Michael Kenna's photographs never disappoint and those included in this edition are stunning with plates produced 1:1 from the original sepia-toned silver gelatin prints. Taken between 1987 and 2002, the photographs document the countryside and shores of Japan in all seasons. Printed as a limited edition of 4,000 copies, copies were not originally signed. This copy is signed boldly by Kenna on the half-title page in the year of publication.

A fascinating look at Ford Motor Company's River Rouge Plant where raw materials (ore, wood, etc.) came in one end and completed automobiles rolled out the other. Kenna's stark black & white photos set a mood that matches this icon of United States industry. Published in conjunction with the exhibition, "Industrial Revelations; The Rouge and other Sites" held at the Detroit Institute of Arts from December 1, 1995 - February 11, 1996. Signed boldly by Michael McKenna on the title page on the day the exhibition opened.
