CAPTC Awarded Five-Year Grant from the CDC as a Capacity Building Assistance (CBA) Provider

CAPTC CBA Team

The CAPTC is thrilled to announce a five-year cooperative agreement awarded by the CDC, to continue our work as Capacity Building Assistance (CBA) providers, with a focus on enhancing the nation's HIV workforce. The CAPTC CBA team will collaborate within the CBA Provider Network to support CDC-funded HIV prevention efforts for health departments, community organizations, clinicians, and partners.

Through targeted CBA initiatives addressing social determinants of health-related inequities in HIV care, the CAPTC aims to strengthen the capabilities of CDC-funded programs and local partners to tackle syndemic conditions and disparities affecting priority populations. Additionally, the CAPTC plans to offer CBA support to address monitoring and evaluation challenges, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of HIV prevention programs.

By the end of 2030, the CAPTC aims to achieve the following outcomes for the within health departments and community organizations we serve:

  1. Increased capacity to deliver comprehensive HIV programs that address syndemic conditions, and structural determinants of health
  2. Enhanced structural environments that support equitable HIV prevention programs and address syndemic conditions and health inequities.

These outcomes will cultivate a highly skilled national HIV workforce that will drive reductions in new HIV infections, improve access to care, enhance health outcomes for individuals with HIV, reduce disparities, and contribute to a coordinated national response to combat the HIV epidemic.

CAPTC Shines at the 2024 STI Prevention Conference

CAPTC Hosts Meet and Greet for CBA Awardees at the US Conference on HIV/AIDS (USCHA)

The CAPTC has a strong presence at the STI Prevention Conference on September 16-19. Ina Park, MD, MS, is leading a debate on whether heterosexual men should be a higher priority in STI control efforts. Four oral sessions with CAPTC team members as key authors include ocular mpox (Wyatt Hanft, MD, MPH; Kelly A. Johnson, MD, MPH), exposure to syphilis in uturo and enhancing prenatal care (Roz Plotzker, MD, MPH), disseminated gonococcal infection vs. uncomplicated gonorrhea (Kelly A. Johnson, MD, MPH;  Wyatt Hanft, MD, MPH; Rosalyn Plotzker, MD, MPH), and managing a congenital syphilis hotline for clinicians (Kelly A. Johnson, MD, MPH).

Additionally, members of our DIS team, Wanda Jackson and Chris Garcia, are presenting a poster on national training approaches for disease intervention.

Hurricane Francine Can’t Stop CAPTC! The CAPTC CBA team hosted a “meet and greet” at this year’s USCHA conference in New Orleans for all the new CBA awardees. The event was well-attended, with CBA staff members from various regions across the country coming together to exchange ideas and strategies for collaboration. The primary focus of the discussions was on finding ways to work together more effectively and enhance the delivery of services during the new CBA period.

By fostering these connections and promoting collaboration, the CAPTC CBA team aims to streamline services, optimize resources, and ultimately improve the impact of their efforts in supporting individuals and communities affected by HIV/AIDS.

Hepatitis C Screening Recommendations

CDPH Dear Colleague Letter reminds providers of the need to screen for HCV in pregnancy, and provide related resources, in reference to the CDC's 2023 Recommendations for Hepatitis C Testing Among Perinatally Exposed Infants and Children. These recommendations prioritize hepatitis C virus (HCV) testing of all perinatally exposed infants ages 2 to 17 months with a nucleic acid test (NAT) for detection of HCV. Anti-HCV antibody testing with reflex to HCV RNA should be reserved for ages > 18 months if not previously tested via NAT.

The World Health Organization has declared a public health emergency for mpox, but a recent GAO report reveals the U.S. has failed to implement key lessons from the 2022 outbreak that affected over 30,000 people. The National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD) warns that without urgent action and proper funding, the nation is unprepared for a new, deadlier mpox strain. NCSD calls on Congress to allocate necessary funds and strengthen STI public health programs to protect Americans from this looming threat.
