Ehu made it to Best Friends!!!
Earlier this month, a very special dog made a very special trip to Best Friends Sanctuary .

We are SO thrilled and grateful that Best Friends was able to give Ehu this amazing opportunity. Partnerships with other animal welfare organizations like Best Friends and support from our community enable us to do our important lifesaving work. Thank you to everyone who helped give Ehu’s story a very special happy ending!

Ehu’s supporters raised over $2,500 to make his trip possible, which shows what a truly amazing community of animal lovers support KHS.

Record breaking adoptions in August!
August was a busy month at Kitsap Humane Society!
In August, we beat all previous adoption records in the history of KHS- we did 606 adoptions!

It all started with KHS’s first ever Kitty Hall series, where we took over Poulsbo, Bainbridge Island, and Port Orchard City Halls with all things kitty! A total of 26 kittens were adopted during these fun events. August also had the busiest adoption day of 2017 thus far during our Clear the Shelters adoption event on August 19, when 63 pets were adopted. This event was a nationwide pet adoption event spearheaded by NBCUniversal.

Thank you to all of our wonderful adopters who made this success possible!
Mayor Becky Erickson, of Poulsbo
Mayor Robert B. Putaansuu, of Port Orchard
Deputy Mayor Sarah Blossom, of Bainbridge Island
Adorable Adoptable - Lindsey
This adorable girl is Lindsey!
Lindsey is a petite Chihuahua-Cocker Spaniel mix who is about 3 years old. She has the cutest tan and white markings and smushy little face! Lindsey loves running around the yard, sniffing everything along the way. She enjoys having toys to play with and a big comfy bed to snuggle up on! Lindsey is a bit on the shy side, but with some patience and a bit of love, she really blossoms into a cuddly little dog! Lindsey is sure to be the perfect snuggle buddy companion! Because she is nervous, Lindsey needs a home without kids and needs a home (no apartments please) with a fully fenced yard. This little girl is uncomfortable around dogs, so she needs to be the only dog in the home. Lindsey's previous family said she was house trained and trained to use potty pads. If you are looking for a sweet, calm dog to be your very best friend, come in and meet Lindsey today!
  Volunteer Spotlight - Heidi Harnett-Wakefield
Last month, Kitsap Humane Society lost one of our most dedicated and influential volunteers, Heidi Harnett-Wakefield , when she passed away unexpectedly. Heidi was an extremely active KHS volunteer who helped as a Lead Dog walker, spent time working with the Transfer and Behavior programs, and served as a mentor to countless other volunteers over the years - and these are just a few of the many volunteer roles Heidi filled. Heidi’s passion and commitment was evident in everything she did. In addition to being a role model for so many volunteers and staff, she was also a vital part of the local animal welfare community. She was a member of our volunteer team for over 13 years and personally contributed over 5,300 hours in that time. Heidi gave much of her time to the dogs, especially those who had harder times finding homes, or those who were stressed in the kennel environment. She spent countless hours at the shelter, walking and working with these dogs, while also supporting and encouraging the many other volunteers and staff who also worked with the dogs. Heidi not only helped to shape the current dog walking program into what it is today, but had also been a strong partner and advocate for lowering our euthanasia rate and strengthening our lifesaving programs. She will be sorely missed by all of her KHS family.

“Instead of a funeral or formal service, I encourage my family and friends to volunteer at an animal shelter and walk a shelter dog in my memory, or adopt a shelter dog.”
-      From the Will of Heidi Harnett-Wakefield
