Last month, Kitsap Humane Society lost one of our most dedicated and influential volunteers, Heidi Harnett-Wakefield
, when she passed away unexpectedly. Heidi was an extremely active KHS volunteer who helped as a Lead Dog walker, spent time working with the Transfer and Behavior programs, and served as a mentor to countless other volunteers over the years - and these are just a few of the many volunteer roles Heidi filled. Heidi’s passion and commitment was evident in everything she did. In addition to being a role model for so many volunteers and staff, she was also a vital part of the local animal welfare community. She was a member of our volunteer team for over 13 years and personally contributed over 5,300 hours in that time. Heidi gave much of her time to the dogs, especially those who had harder times finding homes, or those who were stressed in the kennel environment. She spent countless hours at the shelter, walking and working with these dogs, while also supporting and encouraging the many other volunteers and staff who also worked with the dogs. Heidi not only helped to shape the current dog walking program into what it is today, but had also been a strong partner and advocate for lowering our euthanasia rate and strengthening our lifesaving programs. She will be sorely missed by all of her KHS family.
“Instead of a funeral or formal service, I encourage my family and friends to volunteer at an animal shelter and walk a shelter dog in my memory, or adopt a shelter dog.”
