Record-Breaking Number of

National Merit Scholarship Semi-finalists at CFHS

Cedar Falls Schools is proud to announce students that have been named semi-finalists in the 2024 National Merit® Scholarship Program: Lucas England, Sriya Kalala, Wesley Kitzman, Sai Pranav Kota, Edward Lin, Elliot Purdum, Hayden Riley, Param Sampat and Abigail Sliwinski. Asa Posey (pictured at right) was named a National Merit Commended Student.

These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,250 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition.

About 95 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

High school juniors entered the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the

2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which

served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed

scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT® or ACT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2024 will be announced beginning in April and concluding in July.

The Iowa High School Music Association State Marching Band Festival will be held this Saturday, October 7. The 142-member Tiger Marching Band will perform at 1:45 p.m. at Waterloo Memorial Stadium, 1320 Katoski Drive.

"If you've never heard the band outside, it's a whole different experience than in the UNI-Dome with the roof on. Sixteen bands will be performing throughout the day, and it's a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. We would love to see you and your friends and family in the stadium for the performance. The students have been working hard all year, and their fall show, 'Jupiter Rising,' is full of exciting music and nearly 50 drill moves," said Band Director Kyle Engelhardt.

Ticket prices are $10 adults, $7 senior citizens, and $5 students K-12. Preschool students are admitted free. Tickets are good all day, and concessions will be available. Passes are NOT accepted.

A brand new program is giving all sixth grade students a week full of experiences in the outdoors at Hartman Reserve Nature Center!

Celebrating the 46th Dome Final Season!

From 1977 to 2023, the Tigers have called the Dome, home. Whether you were a Tiger fan, alumni band, cheer, dance or football team member - this was home! Save the date for the final home football game and alumni recognition on Friday, October 13, 2023.

The Division Street Cedar Falls High School holds many memories for our community and alumni including the George Hauser Stadium (named for Cedar Falls 1912 Alumnus).

Built in 1954, the George Hauser Stadium hosted Tiger Football until 1976 when the team moved to the newly opened UNI Dome in 1977. Over 46 regular home seasons have been played in the Dome and starting in 2024, the Tigers will make the move to new 27th Street High School.

“As we prepare to move to the new high school, let's not forget those that raised the bar and set the high standards for our athletic programs we have today.  Coach Pat Mitchell spent 47 years working with student-athletes at Hauser Field.  His passion for CF Football positively influenced players both on and off of the field.  As we get new athletic facilities, we need to be sure to recognize Coach Mitchell's legacy, and the legacy of others that coached before us that set the standard for Cedar Falls Athletics.” Brad Remmert

In recognition and celebration of 46 seasons, CF Athletics and Activities is dedicating the last regular home season game on Friday, October 13 to our 1977 to 2023 alumni who spent time on the Dome field, this includes band, cheer, dance and football.

Alumni are encourage to register 1977-2023 Alumni Band, Dance, Cheer, Football Register Here
