"Our program has DOUBLED in size from previous years. Double the students means double the amount of food we serve every day. For example, taco seasoning that used to last us weeks is now only one meal's worth!"

-Torey Madura, Director of Hikone Community Center

Torey describes a typical day of ASP...

The kids arrive between 3:30 and 4pm

They have a nutritious snack - we offer at least 2 components, for example a cheese stick and a piece of fruit, and we try to keep the snacks fresh food!

Then we have academic support from 4:30 to 5pm. During this time the kids either do homework from school or participate in another activity like reading, math games, color by numbers (that's really popular right now!) - something that stimulates their brains. That is a really good way for us to meet kids where they are at in regard to their needs.

From 5 to 5:30pm is our planned activity centered around social-emotional learning, self growth, moving our bodies, art & design, or music.

At 5:30pm we all sit down together to eat a homecooked, nutritious dinner. The kids love to help cook and plan the meals!

Once a week we go through our reward system and give our special prizes that have been earned throughout the week.

The kids go home at 6pm and the adults stay to recap and plan for the next day!

What's next for Hikone's ASP?

Our main room is getting a makeover during winter break which will allow us to have a better space for our kids and meet their needs better.

With attendance at an all time high, we are redesigning how our space will be used so we can better support the number of students.

We have some amazing lesson planners on our staff who are working on our 2024 summer camp curriculum which we will be piloting with our students at Hikone to get information about how they work in the summer!

In the new year, we are really hoping to continue making connections and growing our current partnerships!
