The Event You've All Been Waiting for...
Note: There is no BI collection planned for the foreseeable future.
Car Seat Recycling Ends on Saturday
Hurry! There are just a couple days left to take your old, expired or damaged car seat to Target for recycling through Saturday, September 24. If you're in the market for baby gear, you can get a 20% off coupon in exchange.

Materials from the old car seats will be recycled by Target’s partner, Waste Management, to create new products such as pallets and plastic buckets, and construction materials such as steel beams and carpet padding. Since 2016, they have recycled 1.97 million car seats!

Target holds these collections for two weeks every April and September, just one small part of their Target Forward sustainability strategy.
Halloween Costumes, Candy and Pumpkins
Drop-off clean outgrown or no longer needed children’s Halloween costumes and accessories from now till Wednesday, September 28, at KiDiMu.

Then come shop for a "new-to-you" costume any Saturday in October from 10am-noon, also at KiDiMu.
If you just want to either drop-off or pick up a costume, that's fine, too. Find more info here.
Start saving your candy wrappers even before official trick or treating. The National Wildlife Federation and Rubicon have teamed up to offer a "Trick or Trash" box to schools, businesses and community organizations. Zero Waste is acquiring such a box and will announce its location soon.

To see what happens to the wrappers once they are sent to g2revolution, watch the one-minute video below starting at 0:29.
And don't even think of trashing your craftily carved pumpkin! If you don't have Bainbridge Disposal's curbside yard waste service, Jefferson County has graciously invited Bainbridge Islanders to join their Zoom workshop on creating and maintaining a healthy home compost system with food and yard waste. The finished compost will provide your plants with essential nutrients and help the soil to retain moisture better.

The class is being offered via Zoom on Tuesday, September 27, 10-11:30am, or Wednesday, September 28, 7-8:30pm. Email Laura Tucker, the county's recycling educator, or call 360-379-4491 to enroll.
Beach Wrap-up
Over 150 volunteers came out on September 10 to clean up our shorelines and roads. Bainbridge Disposal generously donated a 10-yard dumpster, which nearly filled up with 17 tires, a Styrofoam float, a fender, netting and much more.

Fran Korten and Claire Page (pictured right) were the randomly drawn winners of the photo submission contest and will receive a private nature walk led by IslandWood naturalist Christina Wolff.

You don't have to wait for next year's cleanup (September 30, 2023) to keep litter from finding its way to Puget Sound. Pick a place you want to periodically "pluck" and make your commitment official by signing up for Kitsap County's Adopt-a-Spot program.
Mend with a Friend
The next free “Mend with a Friend” class, for adults only, is Sunday, October 2, from 1-3pm at Scrappy Art Lab. Plan to stitch, fix, darn or embellish a cherished garment or bag. Naomi Spinak, chair of the popular ReFashion Show, will be on hand to offer guidance while you make repairs. Please scroll down here to RSVP.
