Recycling Center News for 2020
Dear Friends & Neighbors:

Union Vale's Recycling Center exists to provide a service for town residents. Our mission is to provide a good service without losing taxpayer's money. Using our facility is cheaper than curbside service and many residents enjoy that savings. Since the Recycling Center is not a profit center you can imagine that at a time when garbage has become more expensive to deal with, we perform a juggling act there in order to remain "flat" financially.

The Town Board increased prices for permits & punch cards last year because of the constant rate increases we were incurring from our various vendors. This was the first time the Recycling Center had raised prices since 1980.

At that time, we told you we would continue to monitor the inflows & outflows and would adjust prices down if we could afford it. I am pleased to announce that given your consistent support, the Town Board recently voted to reduce the cost of permits for "Resident Seniors" from $75 to $50 for 2020. All other prices will remain the same.

We still need more subscribers and are hoping the younger generation will start to participate more (our largest group of permit holders are Seniors). To facilitate achieving that goal we are providing an online payment capability for 2020 Recycling Center Permits & Garbage Bag Punch Cards. Coming into Town Hall is difficult for working parents so buying your permits online will mean the Town Clerk will mail them to you.

We are adding a shredding day for all residents (free of charge) to be held at the Recycling Center next fall. This will be in addition to the annual shredding day held at Town Hall every May.

The Conservation Advisory Council (CAC) has also agreed to to help us come up with additional services that the residents might flock to (or just utilize quarterly?). To that end, the Recycling Center Attendants will be distributing a survey designed by the CAC to get your input. Please complete the survey (it will also be online this Monday). Share your ideas or needs so we can round out the offerings and get more targeted use out of our convenient facility!

Permits for 2020 go on sale this Monday, 11/25/19. Pricing is as follows:
Senior Residents (65 and up) - $50
Residents (per household) - $75
Non-Residents - $100
Garbage Bag Punch Cards - $40 per card ($4.00 per bag)

Please support our town programs & facilities...it helps keep all our town taxes down!

Sincerely,

Betsy Maas
