Formation Opportunities during Lent

Sundays are essential to the care and keeping of our spirits. Week by week, worship gathers us back into God’s presence to be nourished, steadied, and reminded of who we are. But Christian faith is not meant to remain static. We are called to grow. Sometimes that growth comes through suffering or trial, when we find ourselves seeking God out of desperation. There are other ways to deepen our faith though, ways shaped by intention rather than crisis. (Thanks be to God!) One of those ways is through study and honest conversation.

During Lent, we invite you to consider a formation opportunity designed to support growth, curiosity, and deeper engagement with God and one another.

Formation - Spiritual Practice

Facilitator - Jenny

One of the formation offerings this Lent is a class on spiritual practices. This is not an academic course or a checklist of spiritual disciplines to master. Instead, it is an invitation to notice how the Spirit is already moving and to learn how we might attune our attention and align our lives to make space for encounter. We’ll explore classical practices of the Christian tradition, but we’ll also pay attention to the holiness hidden in ordinary moments—walking, breathing, listening, resting, paying attention. With curiosity, playfulness, and gentle discipline, we’ll consider how spiritual practices can become less about striving and more about opening ourselves to wonder, presence, and transformation.

Formation - Spiritual Poetry

Facilitator - The Rt. Rev. Marie Jerge

We have a growing and exciting lineup of Adult Education courses at St. Mark's this year. Be sure to put these on your calendar and be ready for more.

We open the season with Rev. Marie Jerge returning during Lent to continue her series on Spiritual Poetry. She will hold an in-person workshop on Thursday, March 26, at St. Mark's, followed by a Zoom session on Thursday, April 9. Her focus on March 26 will be on the Poetry of Holy Week. Email Tom Miller below if you would like to be involved!

Formation - Summer 2026 Opportunity

Facilitator - Cecilia Kendall White

Also returning this summer will be St. Mark's British friend and scholar, Cecilia Kendall White, who will be presenting a three-part series that will either continue God and the Bard, or explore religion in enlightening modes of literature confronting the Divine. These will likely be in July or August. Stay tuned.

Formation - Fall 2026 Opportunity

Facilitator -Tom Miller

Tom Miller will take us down the long, bumpy, and often dangerous tradition of worship in his three-part series From Gods, to God, to Godless. How is it that mankind went from multiple gods with specific 'specialties,' like fertility or weather, to belief systems with only one god in which Christianity became a global phenomenon, and now more and more individuals claim no belief system whatsoever, particularly in Europe. This series will be presented in September or October. Again, stay tuned for specific dates, place, and time.

No prior technical experience is required — clear, hands-on training will be provided, and the commitment is flexible.
