Annual Meeting set for Sunday

St. Mark’s Annual Parish Meeting will be held this Sun., Jan. 21, following a single service at 10 a.m. Important business will include financial reports, the adoption of new bylaws available for you to read HERE, changes to the Articles of Incorporation HERE, as well as the election of three new vestry members--Jane Frederick, Tom Tull and Jim Turk. A nursery for children 3 and under will be available during the service AND the meeting, but there will be no Sunday School.

Coming Tues., Jan. 23, 10 a.m.

Join Tom Miller in the Center on Tuesday for a "romp through the fast times and dangerous world of the 3rd and 4th centuries early Church." You won't want to miss the excitement! And maybe Tom can tell you why the monk at left is wearing glasses. Upcoming subjects for this fiv-session series include St. Augustine, Aquinas, G.K. Chesterton and others. Contact Tom at youngtom1969@gmail.com for more information.

Confirmation/Inquirers’ Class

St. Mark’s will hold a Confirmation/Inquirers’ class on Wednesday evenings during Lent beginning on Feb. 21 with a light supper at 6 p.m. followed by the class at 6:30 p.m. The six-part series will cover the history, faith, liturgy and polity of the Episcopal Church. This class offers a great opportunity for any who wish to learn more about the church, as well as anyone who may be considering being confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church when Bishop Ruth visits later this year. The class will be led by Fr. Roy and Deacon Ken. Please see Fr. Roy or Rev. Ken or contact the church office. Come and see!

Oyster Roast rescheduled for Fri., Feb. 16

Same time (5 p.m.), same place (Live Oak Park, Port Royal). If you paid for the oyster roast but are unable to attend on the new date, your money will be refunded. If you did not sign up for Jan. 12 but want to attend on Feb. 16 or have extra guests, you are certainly welcome. In either case, contact Beth Campbell at flbeth1@gmail.com. Cost is $25 for oyster dinners and $10 for hot dog/chili dinners. BYOB adult beverages. Payments placed in the offering plate may not get to the right person, so please bring them by the Center or mail them to our P.O box.

Don't let this happen to you!

Port Royal Town Council met recently and enacted the following parking ordinances:

  • No parking headed in the opposite direction of traffic flow.
  • No pulling up on the sidewalk on Paris Ave. to the point where your car impedes pedestrians.

You could get a ticket--even while attending church.

Sock drive--692 pairs and counting

We're well on our way to surpassing your generosity from last year's drive! Please continue to bring women's and men's socks for St. Francis Center and boys' and girls' socks for Port Royal Elementary through the end of January. There's plenty of cold weather to come so let's sock it to 'em! Contact Carter Hoyt with your questions at  carterhoyt@comcast.net.

Music notes

Martin Shaw (d. 1958) was a prolific and well-known English composer. He studied under Charles V. Stanford at the Royal College of Music and with a generation of composers that included Gustav Holst (think last week’s anthem tune "Thaxted") and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Shaw’s collaboration with Vaughan Williams produced favorite hymns based on English folk songs, including "All Things Bright and Beautiful" and "Morning Has Broken."  On Sunday our choir will sing the vibrant and festive anthem "With a Voice for Singing," arguably Shaw’s most well-known choral work. --Karen Harmon, Music Director

Martin Luther King, Jr., Parade -- Jan. 15

"His dream is our dream."

Jack Nietert and co-pilot Anne Errington led in the official vehicle.

The parade provided an opportunity to meet other participants.

Thanks to Chris Nietert for organizing the St. Mark's group, to Lori Tull for the photos, to the 20 people who marched, and to all who cheered from the sidelines. "There's lots of enthusiasm," Chris said, "for a repeat performance next year." Let's do it!
