The holiday season is quickly approaching!

As I write this in late October, we’re enjoying some unusually warm weather here in Salt Lake City, hinting that we might skip most of autumn and head straight into winter.

As the holidays draw near, I wanted to remind you that during the holiday season we will continue to be available as normal. While we encourage you to plan ahead for your medication needs, especially during the busy holiday season, please know that we are here for any urgent admissions or immediate needs that arise.

In my years of practice, I’ve found that last-minute transfers, especially late Friday afternoons from hospitals, can be some of the most challenging. But Red Rock Pharmacy is committed to being there for you and ensuring you have the support you need.

Wishing you all a joyful and healthy Thanksgiving filled with family, friends, and good memories!

Shixian Wang

Director of Operation

Meet Tatum, our exceptional Pharmacy Technician at Red Rock Pharmacy in Tempe! Tatum first joined us as an extern in May 2022, and we’re so lucky she chose to stay. Her friendly, welcoming spirit shines through in every interaction, and she’s learned a ton since joining—mastering the IPS system and perfecting her phone etiquette.

Beyond her technical skills, Tatum adds warmth to the Red Rock team, especially during birthday celebrations (she’s a big fan of treats!). Outside of work, Tatum loves spending quality time with her grandpa, and when it comes to favorite foods, she’s all about chicken tacos! 🌮

Tatum’s manager, Tawny, shares, “I am proud to have Tatum as part of my team. Her hard work and dedication serve as a model for all employees. Her hard work and positive vibes light up our team every day!”

Thank you, Tatum, for all you do to make Red Rock Pharmacy a great place to work and visit!

Medicare Advantage Plans annual enrollment is now open!

It's that time of year again—Medicare’s annual enrollment period opened on November 1 and runs through January 15, 2025.

Each year, changes to Medicare Advantage plans make it essential for members—whether residents, patients, friends, or relatives—to review options carefully and ensure they have a plan that best suits their specific healthcare needs.

This year, the program's changes are the largest in a decade, making careful consideration especially important during this open enrollment period, as plans may need to be updated.

At Red Rock Pharmacy, we often work with patients’ prescription drug plans, which are provided either by Medicare Part D (covering medications for beneficiaries with traditional Medicare Parts A and B, now accounting for around 50% of beneficiaries) or through a Medicare Advantage plan’s prescription benefits. Medicare Advantage plans have grown rapidly in recent years and now cover almost 50% of all beneficiaries.

So, how should beneficiaries decide on a plan?

With original Medicare, beneficiaries will need to enroll in a Part D (prescription drug) plan as part of their overall Medicare benefit. While there are several different Medicare Part D plans available, the best way to choose one under original Medicare is by visiting medicare.gov/plan-compare

By answering a few questions about the beneficiary's location and medications, the plan finder will show the estimated monthly out-of-pocket costs for plans in their area. This year, Medicare Part D includes an option to pay the total drug bill in monthly installments over the year, with a maximum out-of-pocket cost of $2,000 in 2025.

For Medicare Advantage plans, the process is more complex:

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurers rather than the federal government, so beneficiaries will need to check specific insurer websites for coverage details. Key elements to look for include:

  • Formulary (list of covered drugs)
  • Full list of covered drugs

Drug coverage varies between insurers, and not all Medicare Advantage plans include prescription coverage. In cases where prescription coverage isn’t included, a stand-alone Part D plan, as outlined on the Medicare website, may be purchased (Dave, could you supply a link, please?). For 2025, out-of-pocket medication costs for Advantage plans are also capped at $2,000.

It’s official - Falls double wounds as biggest source of liability claims for long-term care providers

Falls and wounds are the most common drivers of general liability claim losses for long-term care providers, according to a new report.

Marsh (formerly known as March McLennan), recently released its 2024 General and Professional Liability Benchmark Report for US long-term care and senior living providers. The annual survey included an analysis of nearly 10,300 closed claims totaling approximately $1.8 billion in paid indemnity and expenses over the past 10 years.

Falls continue to be the largest driver of claims, accounting for nearly 50% of the claims paid by long-term care facilities and more than 70% at senior living facilities over the past 10 years.

In LTC (Nursing Homes) Wounds/skin injuries were second followed by infections.

In senior living facilities (mostly Assisted Living) falls, abuse and skin/wound injuries were the leading cause of payouts.

New study shows hope in treating Ophthalmic Shingles

One of the most feared complications of ophthalmic shingles—a reactivation of the chickenpox virus in the nerve supplying the eye—is blindness.

A study led by ophthalmologist Dr. Elizabeth Cohen, who developed blindness in one eye due to ophthalmic shingles and had to give up surgery, was presented at the recent Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Conducted across 95 medical centers, the study found that a year of low-dose valacyclovir resulted in a 26% reduction in new or worsening eye disease in patients who had suffered from ophthalmic shingles.
