Patrick's Pick:
Sixto "Uncovered" Chardonnay, Washington 2014
Drink chardonnay like a rock star!
Yes, he might look like Sammy Hagar and, yes, he used to manage rock bands in Europe but iconic wine mogul, Charles Smith, produces some of the most extraordinary wines to come from Washington State, under his banner of 'Wines of Substance'.
The 2014 Sixto Uncovered Chardonnay is no exception. In partnership with veteran winemaker, Brennon Leighton, the 'Uncovered' is a blend of old vine grapes from 3 high elevation vineyards to be as "cool" as possible. Partially fermented in concrete eggs (again, tre cool!) and French oak, the resultant elixir is redolent of ripe banana, white peach, and nectarine aromatics followed by vanilla, creme brulee, and poached pear luxuriating on your palate! All of this while still retaining finesse, balance, and freshness all night a rock star!
We also have the 2012 and 2013 vintages available in our shop. Wine Enthusiast and Robert Parker consistently rated the Sixto 'Uncovered' Chardonnays in the 90s. a great bargain for such luxury. -$39.99
Doug's Pick:
Pascal Clement Bourgogne Blanc 2016
The price on this guy might seem a little higher than what we usually feature in this part of our newsletter but if you're a White Burgundy drinker, you'll understand the difficulty of finding something of truly exceptional value below this price. This is Chardonnay was sourced from the East-West oriented vineyards of Savigny-les-Beaune and Puligny with a small percentage sourced from Macon. This wine is an exercise in balance, showcasing both depth and weight but also grace and elegance. The finish is long and well, I just can't believe the price on this . -$30.99
Ray's Pick:
Peter Nicolay, Dornfelder 2011
Dornfelder is a grape often overlooked when it comes to the German section. That is good news for us. This oversight creates competition for winemakers to compete by bringing you the best value at the lowest price. Dornfelder, created in the 50's by crossing two German grape varietals, is a grape of international acclaim. The 2011 Dornfelder is at a perfect age for consumption, and we are keeping under $15 again this week! -$13.99
Patti's Pick:
Owen Roe, "Sinister Hand" Red Blend, Yakima Valley, 2016
2016 Owen Roe, "Sinister Hand" Red Blend, Yakima Valley
This wine is as compelling as the story behind its name. Long story shortened there was a family feud over land back in the day (pre-11th century). To settle the dispute they held a rowing competition. Whoever was first to touch the land after rowing across a lake would be the new land owner / ruler. So upon approaching the shore, a guy in one of the boats realized they wouldn't get there first. He proceeded to chop off his hand and threw it ashore, thus touching the land first and winning the title to the land. Apparently, there is still a fortress in the area which you can visit to this day! Any-who, the heat during the 2016 vintage concentrated the dark fruits of this wine to match the dark story. Touches of cedar combined with black pepper and clove are layered with blackberry and fig to create complexity. Drink now with a glass in both hands. -$33.99
