The Healing Power of Environmental Art

in Healthcare Settings

At Be. Workplace Design, we understand what healthcare professionals and patients are up against. Patients are overwhelmed. Staff are burned out. Spaces are stretched to do more than ever before. What if the environment itself could carry a part of that burden?

We’ve witnessed this happen. We’ve seen the moment a patient walks into a once-sterile facility and immediately breathes easier. We’ve seen tired staff pause, take in their surroundings, and feel uplifted! Not just because we changed the furniture, but because we reimagined what the space could say, and how it could feel with the power of art.

Our team has witnessed the power that environmental art has in health care settings and we now recognize it as not just a finishing touch, but a core strategy to a successful, grounding, healing space.

From Clinical to Comforting

One of the most transformative projects we’ve worked on was a children’s mental health facility. Before we arrived, the space looked like many others—functionally designed, but cold. For young patients already facing fear and uncertainty, it was apparent that the environment was inadequately supportive.

We witnessed how integrating a tactical art installation brought the outside world in. A bold and colorful landscape unfolded across the walls—mountains, rivers, forests—inviting interaction and exploration. Children could touch the textures, follow the story, and ground themselves in something steady and familiar.

During a critical moment, a young girl in severe emotional distress was able to self-regulate, not with medication or intervention, but by engaging with the art. She traced the wall’s contours and slowed her breathing. In such settings where escalation is common, the environment itself became part of the care team. Needless to say, this was incredibly meaningful to us.

It’s Not Just Beautiful: It’s Backed by Science

Environmental art has been proven to improve outcomes across multiple metrics:

  • A 2020 Journal of Healthcare Design study showed patients exposed to nature-based art used 35% less pain medication and were discharged sooner than those in standard rooms.

  • Views of nature, even abstracted or stylized, are linked to lower stress hormone levels and better cognitive performance.

  • Environments rich in visual storytelling reduce anxiety and promote a sense of orientation, especially in pediatric and behavioral health settings.

Partnering with Erna Kristin:

Art that Heals

To bring these spaces to life, we’ve partnered with the talented designer and artist Erna Kristin—whose work intertwines color, nature, and emotional intelligence. Her capacity to translate clinical goals into meaningful, immerssive art has helped us turn cold spaces into grounded, welcoming environments.

Erna’s nature-inspired installations don’t just make the space look ‘nicer’—they create calm, spark joy, and support healing across all age groups and acuity levels. Her work is already changing the way patients and staff experience care, and we’re proud to be a part of it!

Let’s Create a Healing Space Together!

Patients don’t need just any artwork on the wall. They need environments that reduce stress and genuinely outcomes. That’s what we do. Whether it’s a single waiting room or an entire behavioral health campus, we design with intention and deliver a measurable impact.

Let’s talk about what your healthcare space is really capable of.
