From Clinical to Comforting
One of the most transformative projects we’ve worked on was a children’s mental health facility. Before we arrived, the space looked like many others—functionally designed, but cold. For young patients already facing fear and uncertainty, it was apparent that the environment was inadequately supportive.
We witnessed how integrating a tactical art installation brought the outside world in. A bold and colorful landscape unfolded across the walls—mountains, rivers, forests—inviting interaction and exploration. Children could touch the textures, follow the story, and ground themselves in something steady and familiar.
During a critical moment, a young girl in severe emotional distress was able to self-regulate, not with medication or intervention, but by engaging with the art. She traced the wall’s contours and slowed her breathing. In such settings where escalation is common, the environment itself became part of the care team. Needless to say, this was incredibly meaningful to us.
