Greetings!
Whether we give thanks in late November or on other occasions, we express gratitude for the protection of our loved ones from harm. This year has brought unprecedented anxiety, and the loss of friends, neighbors, family members, and many others whom we do not know. Perhaps the blessing within our loss is that we recognize our shared responsibility for each other, for our communities, and for the future. We at Elders Climate Action invite you to join us in stepping up to this responsibility. My 11- year-old grandson asked me, “How are we going to do Thanksgiving this year?” We will share the day with those we love via Zoom or FaceTime, and can use this opportunity to pare down our feast, and cook only what we will eat, donating the food we would have cooked to those who do not have enough. This year I am thankful for my family and friends, near and far, and also for this movement of elders that, in spite of adversity, continues to push for solutions to the Climate Crisis before it becomes irreversible. We do this for our children, grandchildren and future generations.
We at Elders Climate Action wish you a healthy and peaceful season of giving thanks, and the fortitude to continue the work for our planet and future generations.

Check out this inspiring video about the growing intergenerational alliance in the fight to save our planet, featuring ECA’s Geri Freedman in an interview on “Peril & Promise,” a public media initiative from WNET. If you thought that today’s youth and elder climate activists were not committed to supporting each other, this will warm your heart.

Make Conscious Choices this Holiday Season
As you plan your holiday meal this year, we urge you to buy, prepare, and consume less. Consider a turkey breast rather than the whole bird, and design a menu with fewer dishes than usual. Websites such as the Food Network, Bon Appetit, and Epicurious offer basting glazing and brining recipes that keep poultry moist during roasting, and feature vegan options as well. A smaller roasting pan in the oven allows for cooking another dish or two at the same temperature and lowers energy consumption; using the convection feature in your oven also reduces cooking time. Slow cookers also use less energy. Save water by scraping plates after the meal, and use the dishwasher instead of rinsing and washing by hand. With a few changes we can celebrate the holiday while being mindful of each other and the planet.
