Sharon Neidel
President
Hard to say Fall is in the air when we’re in this heat wave. Hope you all have air conditioning.
Are you planning to attend the annual member gathering on October 19th? This is your opportunity to meet the Board and learn about the Region.
For those of you who can’t attend let me bring you up to date on the Redwood Region. I hate to brag but we are awesome! As you know we just celebrated our 55th Anniversary as a PCA Region. No social club continues for 55 years without it being a very special organization. We have continued to be strong with our variety of events and welcoming social atmosphere.
The current Board of Directors is strong and dedicated to continuing the legacy of the Region. We get the job done but also enjoy our time together as friends. The Executive Council (myself as President; Pat Burke, VP; Eileen Gaines, Secretary; Don Magdanz, Treasurer and Vern Rogers, Past President) are enjoying our jobs enough to all volunteer for re-election. There are many other appointed Board and Committee positions. Most are willing to continue but there is always room for more help.
Rex Simmons has stepped away as our Safety Chairman. We thank Rex for dedication to keeping our events safe. Craig Steele has agreed to fulfill the duties for the remainder of the 2024 term. Craig has been instrumental in obtaining our new Tour Radio and Safety Equipment and will be a welcome addition to the Board.
If you are interested, consider attending a Board Meeting. They are the last Tuesday of each month at Torches Restaurant in Petaluma. Even if you do not want to run for the Board your feedback is important and welcome. October 29th is your last opportunity for 2024. The November 26th meeting is dedicated to planning the 2025 Calendar and we do not have a meeting in December.
We had such a great variety of events this year with the crown jewel being the Treffen effort. It really showed what great teamwork Redwood can offer. If you have ideas for events next year
be sure to come to the planning meeting on November 26th at Torches Restaurant. If you can’t make it pass along the information to a Board member who can assist. We want your input to schedule a variety of events that can appeal to as many members as possible.
The Executive Council and Board are here to facilitate the events, but this is your region and your opinion matters. If you have an event idea or a suggestion please let one of us know. We want to continue to be the best Region for another 55 years.
Hope to see you at an event soon

Pat Burke
Vice-President
Hello fellow Redwood Region Members!
Another month has driven by us in 6th gear! It’s so amazing that dates on our calendars, that we placed so long ago, have passed us in the fast lane and now sooner than later new ones are coming quickly upon us!
Just last week an event that my wife and I were planning for over six
months is behind us and 31 other Redwood Region members, The annual Murphy’s Tour to the Ironstone Concours d’Elegance. We were not disappointed one bit. An away from our Region for a 3-night stay in Murphys, California, the birthplace of the Gold Rush! You will read more about this get together in other articles so I won’t go on anymore but to say, next year, you should join us, it’s so much fun!
October brings us so much more. Ben Davoren, Redwood Charity Liaison has organized a “work for your lunch” charity Redwood Empire Food Bank event on October 11th. This event is so rewarding and beneficial to our community. Please follow the attached link to sign up. You will not be disappointed! Register
Our annual Members Social Gathering is on October 19th and starts with an optional driving tour and finishes with a lunch at the famous Union Hotel in Occidental. This annual meeting will give you an opportunity to meet and mingle with fellow Redwood Region members and meet this year’s executive board running for election. Spoiler alert, yours truly is up for reelection as Vice president along with our President Sharon Neidel, Secretary Eileen Gaines and Treasurer Don Magdanz. You can sign up for this event here: Register
Then, on October 26th join us for the 10th annual Va Va Vroom Paella event at Pech Merle Winery, owned by Redwood Region members’ Ruby and Bruce Lawton, for a fabulous paella lunch. It starts with a great driving tour of Sonoma County ending in beautiful Alexander Valley. Sign up for one of our region's most popular events here: Register
We finish off the year with our annual Holiday Party on December 14th! This year’s festive gathering will be held at the fabulous Marin Yacht Club! The party will begin with amazing food and then, put your dancing shoes on for the sounds of a great band that we’ve had for several years, “Void where Prohibited.” This event is not to be missed! Consider booking a local
hotel and an Uber so you can enjoy the evening more. Registration will be available in November.
We’re already beginning to plan for 2025 events and we’d love for you to be involved in any way that you can. Please consider joining us for one of our monthly Board meetings which are on the last Tuesday of every month at Torches Restaurant in Petaluma and, your dinner will be on us! You know, we are “Fueled by volunteers. It’s not just the cars, it’s the people!”
I’m extremely honored to be your Vice President and I look forward to seeing you at one or more of our future events and, if we haven’t met, please introduce yourself. I’d love to meet you!
You can always reach out to me directly at email with any questions.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Thank you!

Uncle Ferry wants you to join the P.O.S.S.E!
October 27th, 8 am to 10 am.
What’s this, you ask?
It’s the Porsche Owners Sunday Social Event…
Who’s invited?
Any Porsche owner or driver, regardless of the model they have.
When is it?
Every fourth Sunday of the month from 8 am to 10 am.
Where is it?
In front of Starbucks, at the familiar Vintage Oaks Shopping Center, in Novato.
How much will it cost?
Nothing, nada, zip, zero.
Why is this happening?
It’s an opportunity for Porsche owners to have an informal get-together, at a North Bay location, before going to brunch, heading to the hills, cruising to the coast… or, wherever one wishes to drive that day. It’s a chance to meet and talk to your fellow Porsche owners. It’s a chance to put names and faces with the cars. It’s a chance to show off your ride!
See you there!

On Saturday, September 14, Auto Sport Detail of Santa Rosa, one of Redwood Region’s sponsors, conducted a tech session featuring proper “washing and maintenance” of your Porsche!
The beautiful Fall morning (rescheduled because of torrential rain in April) paved the way for 37 members and guests in 28 Porsches to enjoy the demonstration, pastries and coffee and goodie bags with Auto Sport Detailing products and swag!
New member, Soren Bested won the complimentary “car wash” raffle and moved his beautiful Cabriolet into the wash bay! The demonstration, hosted by Quinn Barri and Crissa Turner (owners of Auto Sport Detail) lasted almost 90 minutes and was filled with lots of great questions and answers. The retail shop did a brisk business with members stocking up on washing mitts, wheel brushes, micro-fiber towels, buckets and detailing products. Congratulations to Don Nohai and Neil Erickson winners of the “free” future car wash raffle!

Special thanks to Crissa and Quinn for their welcoming hospitality and hugely informative program!
Two run groups left the Auto Sport Detailing at 11 am for a spirited ride out to Wohler Bridge and Westside Road – a favorite of Redwoodies… There were lots of the requisite twists and turns as we wended our way to Chalk Hill Road – not for the faint of heart! Both groups pretty much stayed on route as we drove the fifty-mile route to Windsor!!
Thanks to leads, Essy Fariab and Ben Davoren; sweeps, Don Nohai and Craig Steele; and sweeps, Sharon Neidel and Brad Williams. All drivers and passengers were delivered safely to the lunch venue.
Lunch was served at Kin Windsor. A very popular restaurant in downtown Windsor, Kin knocked it out of the park! We feasted on a three-course lunch in our own private room! The eclectic menu didn’t disappoint and our enjoyed the lunch immensely! By the comments and overall reaction to the program, this could very well turn into an annual event.

Don’t forget to patronize all of our sponsors and always ask for our PCA membership discount! If you ever have ideas on how to add to, improve or have questions about our Sponsorship Program please don’t hesitate to reach out to Jeff Hall. Please don’t reach out to the sponsors directly as we may already have discussions in the works about the exact idea you are enthusiastic about. Thank you!

Special Sponsorship Feature
Who ya gonna call?
The scene: Wednesday afternoon, September 25th – one day before departing for Murphys for the annual Ironstone Concours d’Elegance! I pulled my 911 into the driveway for a detailed wash before leaving for Murphys the following morning…
An hour later, I brought my cleaning supplies out to complete the task!
Unbeknownst to me, the next-door neighbor decided to spray paint their house, in the wind without alerting the nearby neighbors! Imagine the shock when I discovered the “overspray” covering the entire car!! See photo below:
| |
We were departing for Murphys in less than 20 hours!
Who ya gonna call?
You’re going to call our sponsor, Auto Sport Detailing on Cleveland Avenue in Santa Rosa.
They told me to bring my car to them and they would wash the car…
They did wash the car and stayed open late ‘til they finished the job.
The car looked brand new and all the overspray was gone!
Thank you to Quinn Bari and Crissa Thompson
for coming to our rescue!!

Hello Zone 7,
Boo!! It’s October.
Finishing up September and still more Oktoberfest activity in the works. I do hope you celebrated well. “Ein Prosit”
Autocross, Concours, Breakfasts, Anniversary celebrations, Dinners & Tours were all on my list
of fantastic events.
Special shout out to David Bunch, the Zone 7 Social Media Chair, who was very busy and had lots of fun in the “9th” month. The posts he made covered MANY of the Porsche car model numbers, from 901 to 930 and all the #s in-between, even highlighting transmission generation numbers as well.
Do you follow the Zone 7, Zone 7 AX & Zone 7 Concours on Facebook? See below for links.
October will bring the Zone 7 Presidents Meeting and more events.
3 more Zone 7 Autocrosses and 1 more Zone Concours are on the calendar this year
Info again below.
.
Many of the Regions are or will be holding their officer elections. Let your team know if you are
interested in a position, maybe that starts by helping with an event or joining a committee. I do ask that you make your voice heard and be a part of that. The PCA saying “Fueled By Volunteers” really hits home when you see what all those who raise their hand can accomplish. Thank you all.
Looking forward to seeing you at an event.

3rd Annual Redwood Region Ironstone Concours D'Elegance in Murphys, CA
Jeff Hall
The third annual Tour to Murphys for the Ironstone Concours d’Elegance greeted 30 members in 16 Porsches with glorious weather for all three days! The event has been held for 26 years during the last week of September! New members and veterans alike drove the scenic route from the Jelly Belly Factory in Fairfield on Thursday (some on Friday) for a three-hour drive – but not before members hitched a ride on the Jelly Belly Express from the parking lot to the retail store/factory…
| |
Craig Steele (Tour Meister) along with Paige and Eileen Gaines, planned three days of
drives remotely – not an easy task – for all to enjoy. We saw a 50% increase in the
number of attendees to the event this year! There were many newcomers as well as
Murphys seasoned veterans.
The itinerary this year included Thursday and Friday Tours from the Jelly Belly Factory
in Fairfield, two Tours while in Murphys, our annual group dinner at the Murphys Historic
Hotel. On Saturday we all dined at the wonderful Toscano’s Italian Restaurant and, of
course, what would the weekend be without the Ironstone Concours d’Elegance!
A crisp, cool Friday morning began early with our first stop at Calaveras Big Trees State
Park (see header photo). Per usual the roads in Calaveras County are as smooth as
glass! Perfect for our spirited drives. Quote of the morning was Pat Burke talking with
the Park Ranger while he craned his neck to see the tops of the trees, “I wonder why
they call them big trees” … Good thing the Ranger had a sense of humor! The trees
were magnificent as we left to continue our journey to Alpine Lake at 8,000 plus feet!
After turning around at Alpine Lake, we made a brief stop at Bear Valley Ski Resort for a
bio break. We continued to the Arnold Chinese Restaurants. Who knew how good
Chinese food could be in the middle of the Sierra Foothills. It was delicious!
Undaunted, but sated with egg rolls, we trekked on to one of the very special highlights
of the weekend.
| |
We arrived right on time at Kelly Telfer’s studio in Sonora. Kelly’s motorsports artwork is in the collections of race drivers, sponsors and featured in national art shows and exhibits. His artwork is featured at the legendary Petersen Automobile Museum in Los Angeles and the LeMay - America’s Car Museum in Tacoma, Washington. Kelly's Website
Kelly has been or is currently the official artist for:
Porsche Club of America’s Annual Werks Reunion
Porsche Club of America’s Annual Porsche Parade
Many other events of renown
Kelly was a gracious host while we toured his entire property and marveled at the artwork! Everyone left with at least one signed poster. All were looking forward to visiting Kelly in his booth at the Concours on the following day!
| |
The Friday arrivals were milling about Murphys when we returned from our tour, availing
themselves of the various galleries, shops, wineries and restaurants as we all prepared
for our 3 rd Annual BBQ Buffet on the patio at Murphys Historic Hotel! We all enjoyed a
traditional “gold-country” barbecue feast with all the fixins’! Several folks with special
dietary constraints thoroughly enjoyed their special meals as well. Everyone raved
about the quality of the food, service and venue. Special thanks to Chef Brian Goss
and his team for knocking it out of the park for the 3 rd time! See you next year for the 4 th
Annual…
| |
7 am. Saturday morning, day of the Concours d’Elegance, started out beautifully with blue skies and cool temperatures. Thirty members in sixteen Porsches (well, mostly) met at 9 a.m. to begin the Saturday Tour culminating at the Concours! Again, we found ourselves on beautiful, twisty back roads with little or no traffic. We paused for a group photo op at the New Melones Lake.
We ended the Tour on the Concours grounds, at Ironstone Winery, where we proceeded to our wonderful, private, grassy area to set up our Club Corral! Thanks to Anna Sass of Sass Public Relations, the event organizers. Security shooed anyone not driving a Porsche away – we were the only cars ‘not being judged’ parked on grass! Upon arrival at the corral we had a terrific “pre-concours” tailgate party! Thanks to Craig and Sandy Steele and especially Bruce and Ruby C Lawton for the “spread and all the great wines! Thanks to Paul and Kay Simmons, Pat Burke, Katherine Zimmer, Kathleen Smith and Jeff Hall for providing the “bubbles”!
The Concours d’Elegance was in full swing and featured 300+ cars from every era. The
weather was sunny in the low 90’s – much cooler than last year! There were Packards,
Model Ts, Woodies, T-Birds, Cadillacs, Airstreams, MGs and Mercers! Also in the show
were Panteras, cars with fins, Austin Healeys and a Porsche/VW combo cabriolet.
Food, beer and wine were served by local breweries and Ironstone Winery. Most
of us gathered for the Annual Vintage Auto Races on the dirt track adjacent to the
event. That these cars are running let alone racing each other was an inspiration!
| |
We wrapped up the weekend with a wonderful Italian dinner at Toscana’s Restaurant adjacent to the Victoria Inn. The food was incredible and despite the wedding reception across the street, everyone enjoyed the festive dinner!
If a successful event is measured by anything it might just be by the number of Redwood members who have already reserved their rooms for next year; many rooms were “pre-registered” upon checkout! We’re already preparing for the 4th Annual Redwood Region Weekend at the Ironstone Concours d’Elegance! If you are interested in obtaining information about lodging in Murphys (rooms sellout quickly) contact Jeff Hall. email

Dave & Marianne Boyd, Past President Yosemite Region with their 1972 914 Race Car.
This special weekend could not have taken place without the efforts of many. Many thanks go to:
Craig Steele, Eileen and Paige Gaines for looking after the “little” details during the weekend – tour design and familiarity with the region.
Anna Sass from Sass PR for always providing us with our “grassy knoll” on which to park our cars and tailgate.
Our hosts in Murphys: the Victoria Inn, the Murphys Historic Hotel and Patio; Toscana’s Italian Restaurant.
Don Magdanz for always paying the bills.
All the Leads, Mids and Sweeps that made the drives fun, safe and anything but mundane.
And, of course Kelly Telfer for hosting us, along with his wife, at his amazing property/studio.
Good night Murphys, until next year!

New Redwood Safety Director
Craig Steele
Safety Director
I was asked by Sharon Neidel, our president to complete the remaining term of our current safety director, Rex Simmons who resigned this fall. I agreed to fulfill that role for 2024 term and would
probably continue for 2025 as I was involved in several roles to bolster our safety of event tours.
Don Magdanz, our board treasurer and I have spent a couple of years upgrading our tour radio communication system by buying 16 GMRS radios. Don and I have since discovered that our previous FRS walkie talkies can be tuned into the same frequency (15.0). This channel setting allows other tour drivers to hear the radio traffic between the LEAD-MID-SWEEP tour drivers. After a traffic incident, we also developed emergency red bags for the tour sweeper drivers which include, reflective vests, flashers and first aid kits.
| |
The Safety Director, per the Redwood Region Bylaws, report directly to the President and acts as an advisor to the Autocross and Event leaders. My position is advisory in nature, and I plan to interface with other regions, Zone 7 and PCA safety entities for the most current safety protocols and regulations. As the new Redwood Region Safety Director, I will receive copy communications of all PCA Observer, Post Event, and Incident reports. I’m discussing with Sharon, our President, the four types of minor waiver and release of liability and indemnity agreements and when to use them in the future at our events.
I look forward to serving in this capacity for the next year..

This year’s Road Trippin’ adventure took place over 15 days and included 4323 miles of scenic byways and adventures focused mainly on Wyoming.
My wife, Carrie, and our friends Darren Pack and his wife, Kelley, headed out from Sea Ranch to our first scenic destination – the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. We drove our 2013 Boxster S (The Banana) and Darren & his wife drove their 2014 Cayman S. Our first overnight was in Bakersfield and then another night in St. George, Utah, before arriving at the Grand Canyon. If you’re heading that way, be sure and stop ay Kohnen’s Authentic German Bakery in Tehachapi - not to be missed. By the way, many folks feel that the North Rim is preferred for its views and substantially less tourists.
Our next stop was Page, Arizona, visiting Horseshoe Bend. It’s one of the most photographed
spots in the U.S! Also, be sure and take the tour of Antelope Canyon.
We then headed up to Bryce Canyon via Utah’s scenic Byway 12, one of the great drives in the U.S. for a overnight stay. We got there early evening when there were few crowds, for and the lighting of the hoodoos was beautiful. We then travelled east along another terrific road - Highway 128 – just north of Moab. Be sure to stop for a meal at the Red Cliffs Lodge along the way.
Leaving Utah, we spent the night in Grand Junction, Colorado before heading up to Cheyenne,
Wyoming. This was one of our planned highlights of the trip, going to Cheyenne Frontier Days,
known by rodeo fans as the “Daddy of 'em All”. The nine-day rodeo takes place in late July and includes three bull sections and two sections of saddle and bareback broncos daily. It’s been happening since 1897.
| |
Our next stop was Devil’s Tower. It is truly a magnificent site to behold and well worth visiting. We spent the evening in Gillette where you’ll want to visit the Frontier Auto Museum.
The next day took us to Sheridan, where a tour of the Brinton Museum is another must-see. It’s located on the historic 620-acre Quarter Circle A Ranch featuring 19th, 20th and 21st century Western and American Indian Art in a setting that is art unto itself. The Forrest E. Mars, Jr. building (think M & M’s and Mars Bars) includes three floors featuring five galleries, a Museum Store, and the Brinton Bistro, offering indoor and outdoor dining with picturesque, 180-degree views of the Bighorn Mountains. Nestled into the hillside, the building is anchored by a two-foot thick, 51-foot high, 209-foot-long arced rammed earth wall, the tallest in North America. Also in Sheridan is the Trail End historic site, which was the home of John Kendrick, a
governor and U.S. Senator of Wyoming.
We then spent two days in Cody travelling there via the Big Horn Scenic Byway. On the western end of the Big Horn Scenic Byway, Shell Creek Canyon and Shell Falls create some of the most spectacular scenery along the route. The major attraction in Cody is the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. It’s really five museums in one and you can easily spend hours going
through the galleries. We had dinner at the Irma Hotel, named for Buffalo Bill’s daughter, and
then watched a very campy free Wild West show in the street outside its front door. We spent
the evening at the Cody Theater and their Wild West Spectacular, the Musical show.
| |
The next day we drove to Yellowstone via the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway having lunch at the
Yellowstone café and dessert at the Roosevelt Lodge, and working our way back to Cody via
the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway. Cody also has a rodeo every evening during the summer.
Travelling south, we went through Thermopolis and then followed the beautiful Wind River Scenic Byway. We took several backroads to visit the gravesite of Sacajawea, located in Ft.
Washakie on the Wind River Reservation. She guided Lewis & Clark as they made their voyage across North America. After following along the Grand Tetons and having lunch in Jackson, we spent the night in Victor, Idaho.
Our next adventure took us through Idaho Falls over to Craters of The Moon National Monument by way of Arco. Arco was the first community in the world to have electricity generated solely by nuclear power. This occurred for about an hour on July 17, 1955, powered by Argonne National Laboratory BORAX-III reactor at the nearby National Reactor Testing Station (NRTS), now the Idaho National Laboratory. After visiting Craters of the Moon, we stopped at the Shoshone Ice Caves. Our last stop before we reached our overnight stay in Wells, Nv, was visiting Twin Falls. This is where daredevil Evel Knievel attempted to jump across the Snake River canyon in 1974 on a steam powered rocket.
We spent the last night of our Road Trip in Reno before heading home the next day.
A great adventure for sure!

Hello Redwood,
We all want to make sure our children have a warm supportive environment that nurtures and helps them grow. One challenge that too many of our children face is bullying by their peers.
Unfortunately, bullying is all too common among children. As high as 25% of pre-teens and teens in the general population are estimated to experience bullying, and among marginalized populations, such as foster youth, that figure is much higher -up to 80%. Bullying can have serious, lifelong consequences, including death.
If a child who has protective parents is the victim of bullying, the parents are able to act to end the bullying. But sadly, for children in foster care, bullying and teasing may be not only more common, but they may have fewer supports available to help them deal with these issues.
Everybody has the right to be treated with respect. We cannot allow bullying behavior to become normalized, and we must effectively advocate for children in foster care, who are often targeted.
It is estimated that foster children move schools at least twice a year, and by the time
Research shows that children in foster care who have a CASA:
- Have better educational outcomes
- Are more likely to be enrolled in school
- Get more educational, therapeutic and medical services
- Are more likely to be re-united with their families
- Are administered fewer Psychotropic medications
- Spend less time in foster care
At CASA of Sonoma County, we believe that all children in foster care deserve a CASA who can help them to understand their situation and can advocate fiercely on their behalf.
In Partnership for Children,
Heloisa Heinen
CASA Executive Director
