President
Is it really September already?
The summer seems to fly by faster every year.
Much of my August was focused on the work that goes on behind the scenes so you can enjoy the events. David and I both help with the set-up of Werks Reunion which
takes an entire day. This year I filled in for the Volunteer Coordinators, Kirk & Carolyn Doberenz, at the event. I spent most of the actual event at the volunteer tent / information booth but I had a perfect view of the corral and was right next to the 356’s and Spyders. A very nice view for the day. The cars were spectacular as always but I go for the Porsche friends I meet as well. My station was right off the Porsche corrals so I had the perfect opportunity to see everyone as
they arrived. I saw so many old friends and had a chance to meet some new ones as well.
Just a perfect day.
That following week was all about the 55th Anniversary Social. I think I spent part of everyday getting things ready. It was so rewarding to see how much you all enjoyed the event.
Big thanks to Kurt Fischer for organizing the Nickle & Nickle event. I was thinking 10AM was
a bit early to taste wine but it worked out just fine. Bruce Mooers was a perfect host and their wine is enjoyable anytime of the day or night.
I have aways enjoyed the weekend tours. I am looking forward my 1st Murphys Tour later
this month. I know Jeff has a full schedule of activities to keep us busy.
We have another opportunity for a weekend tour. Is anyone interested in joining us in Mendocino the 1st weekend of November? SVR has done a tour on this weekend as long as I can remember. Redwood used to do a tour and meet up with them for joint activities. David and I would like to revive that event. Let us know if you are interested.
Summer may be coming to a close but we still have plenty of Redwood events left for 2024
Come on out and join in the fun. Hope to see you soon.
Questions? Email me.

Pat Burke
Vice-President
Hello Redwood Region, PCA Members,
Well, another month has passed us by, and boy was it filled with numerous events and multiple things to do. For me August is always busy. First and foremost, it’s my wife, Katherine’s birthday month and we celebrate the entire month!
We put quite a few miles on the Carrera this month, which is always another reason to celebrate. But it also resulted in a very bizarre reason for a tire replacement when, unknown to me on the way home from Tahoe, I ran over a 5-inch long oak stick which penetrated the outer sidewall of my left rear tire rendering it useless. Luckily, my family-owned Napa tire shop was able to order a replacement for me and within a day we were back on the road enroute to Monterey for Werks Reunion and Car Week.
| |
Along the way we met up with fellow Redwood member, Don Kreiger and two of his friends for lunch in Morgan Hill. After lunch, we traveled together south on 101 into the Monterrey Peninsula. This year’s Werks Reunion was fantastic. It was a great turnout of Porsche enthusiasts from all over with more than 900 cars in the corral. We had the opportunity to meet up with numerous friends at the event and afterwards we had dinner with Joe Burroughs in Carmel and the next night with Barbara and Paul Chrisman in Pacific Grove. It’s always special to meet up with friends when we’re on the road!
For us, Car Week was a bit busier than in the past. There were lots of younger drivers, lots of really expensive cars and lots of law enforcement trying to keep the lots of LOUD car activity at
a minimum. We used Uber at night to go to dinner and to be safe as well as responsible.
As you read this, Katherine and I will be in Boston and Maine. A family get together, and the sites of Boston are on tap. A Red Sox game at Fenway, the foodie scene, the numerous historical sites to visit and, as always, I’ll keep my eyes peeled for the Porsches along the way!
September has several awesome events to consider. First up on September 14th is “The Devil
is in the Details!” Thanks to the generous offering of our region sponsor Auto Sport Detailing, your car could win a free car wash! The day will also have a spirited drive through Sonoma County finishing with a group lunch at Kin Windsor Restaurant. Register on MSR: The Devils in the Details.
There is a 2-day Autocross event at Thunderhill Raceway September 21 & 22 hosted by the
SVR and Redwood Regions Here is a link to register: Thunderhill Autocross
Porsche Owners Sunday Social Event (POSSE) on September 22 at Vintage Oaks Shopping Center in Novato 8-10AM. Join other Porsche owners in the social event.
And we’ll finish the month with a 3-day tour to Murphys, California to attend the Ironstone Concours. Check with the tour organizer, our membership director Jeff Hall, on registration and availability of rooms via Jeff's email.
Every month there’s more and more happening in our club and we’d love for you to be involved in any way that you can. Please consider joining us for one of our monthly Board meetings
which are on the last Tuesday of every month at Torches Restaurant in Petaluma and, your dinner will be on us! You know, we are “Fueled by volunteers. It’s not just the cars, it’s the people!”
I’m extremely honored to be your Vice President and I look forward to seeing you at one
or more of our future events and, if we haven’t met, please introduce yourself. I’d love to
meet you! You can always reach out to me directly via email with any questions.
I look forward to hearing from you! Thank you!

Uncle Ferry wants you to join the P.O.S.S.E!
September 22nd, 8 am to 10 am.
What’s this, you ask?
It’s the Porsche Owners Sunday Social Event…
Who’s invited?
Any Porsche owner or driver, regardless of the model they have.
When is it?
Every fourth Sunday of the month from 8 am to 10 am.
Where is it?
In front of Starbucks, at the familiar Vintage Oaks Shopping Center, in Novato.
How much will it cost?
Nothing, nada, zip, zero.
Why is this happening?
It’s an opportunity for Porsche owners to have an informal get-together, at a North Bay location, before going to brunch, heading to the hills, cruising to the coast… or, wherever one wishes to drive that day. It’s a chance to meet and talk to your fellow Porsche owners. It’s a chance to put names and faces with the cars. It’s a chance to show off your ride!
See you there!

Zone 7 Representative

Hello Zone 7,
I’m just home from Werks Reunion Monterey. Wow … What an event! I pulled a couple volunteer shifts and setting up / working at the event was SO fun. Thanks to all who volunteered, were one of the almost 1000 participants on the judged field and in the corral. Congratulations to multiple Zone 7 ribbon winners. An amazing venue, great weather, cars and friends everywhere. (Even the music was enjoyable).
The week before I sailed with Princess Cruises / Treffen at Sea. I had been to Alaska before and was “all in” on the PCA aspect of the cruise. Every moment there was something to do. Yes, in the ports of call but on board even more. I attended all ten tech talks, raced toy cars, entered the on board concours, decorated my door, enjoyed each of the special cocktails, had amazing food, attended multiple parties and get togethers. Seeing many friends and making even more. I enjoyed it so much I have already signed up for the ’25 Treffen at Sea where we will visit the Eastern Seaboard. We will also celebrate PCAs 70th anniversary with many special functions.
| |
Looking forward to September and seeing you and an event.

When I woke up on the 24th to the sound of rain I thought Oh No not on our anniversary social! Luckily the weather gods were shining on us and it turned out to be a spectacular day in the redwoods.
Our members were greeted with a gift bag containing wine glasses and a challenge coin to commemorate our 55th anniversary as a PCA region.
| |
PCA was represented by our Zone Representative, Brian Adkins, who made the official
presentation of our certificate from PCA and read a congratulatory letter from National President, Aaron Amborsino.
| |
The longest term members in attendance were Bob Sherwood (1971) and Jim Hurson (1972). There were 8 Past Presidents who attended including Jim Hurson (1980 & 1981), David Bunch (2004, 2005 & 2006), Kurt Fischer (2007,2008 & 2009), Greg Maissen (2010 & 2011), Vern Rogers (2012, 2013, 2014 & 2023), Craig Steele (2017 & 2018), Chip Witt (2019 & 2020) and Ben Davoren (2021 & 2022.)
Neal Parafina, Service Manager for Porsche Marin, came on their behalf with a beautiful new Cayenne for us to view. Since we had a nice place to show a few cars they include Peter Habicht’s 356, our Past President Jim Hurson’s 911 and an IROC tribute car.
Everyone had a great time enjoying the camaraderie of old friends, Redwood history and an amazing buffet from St. Peter’s Fare.
Many thanks to Rex & Jill Simmons for allowing us to use their picturesque facility and to our caterer, Joe Sanpietro for the amazing food. Thanks also go out to those who donated gifts for Door Prizes, Bruce & Cheryl Lawton (Pech Merle), Katherine Zimmer Burke (Porsche Photo), Jim & Yvonne Hurson (Wine), and Lori Schutz (Peter Schutz Book).
Thank you to our VP Pat Burke for the coin idea and coordination and to our Secretary, Eileen Gains for all the assistance with set-up.
Enjoy the photos!

Sharon & I roll into the Monterey Pines Golf Course about 9:30 Thursday morning, August 15th, to assist the crew on setting up Werks Reunion. This is Werks Reunion Monterey 10th year and our 4th location in the Monterey area. Sharon and I have been involved in all 10 of Werks and when Sharon was the Zone 7 Rep, we were part of the PCA team when we were asked to be in the "Legends of the Autobahn" event. When Legends was moving to another location, is when Porsche & PCA decided to start the Werks Reunion event. Leading up to Werks, I handle collecting the info for the signs for the "Judging" Porsches and format their info and send to our sign printer. Today I help lay out the Judging field for the 165+ Porsches that are going to be Judged on Friday with PCA VP Ron Gordon. Since most of our crew has done this a few times we are able to complete this job in a few hours.
Sharon is back to doing her prior job at Werks, handling the PCA Volunteers. She did this for all the Legends and Werks up to 2018, when she also had Rennsport Reunion. The couple that took over Werks Volunteers in 2018, had their daughter getting married in Oregon, so Sharon jumped back in.
While we lay out the 2 fairways for the Judging Porsches, another team of PCA Volunteers are laying out the 2 fairways for the Werks Reunion Porsche Corrals for 650+ Porsches that are parked by model. Sometimes the Porsches in the Werks Porsche Corrals are even more special than the judging areas. Another group of PCA Volunteers are packing the "Goodie Bags" for everyone that registered for the Judging or the Porsche Corrals.
Also, getting set up are all the tents for all the Sponsors and Vendors that will be here Friday. There is a large group of Porsche Dealers here with their entries in the "Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge". The high school group we use, is laying out their 2 fairways for all the General parking vehicles expected Friday.
We have an enjoyable dinner Thursday at the Hotel Del Monte in Monetery with the rest of the PCA staff & Werks team. Friday morning, we arrive at Monterey Pines at 6:15 am. and there are Porsches already lined up to get in, even though they were informed gates would open at 7 am!!
Security was holding the entrants at the gate and our "Volunteer" pass got us around and into the parking area. Sharon heads off to the Volunteer Tent to start placing the PCA Volunteers in their positions and I headed over to the fairways to be ready to park the 165+ Judged Porsches as they arrive. The Judged Porsches are grouped on their field by the Class they are in. Usually by Porsche model or groups like "Sports Purpose", "Race/Competition" or "GT's".
| |
7 am. and the Porsches start heading down the cart path, checking in at the "Judging" tent and then being directed down to their Class areas, where our team is waiting to lead them to their assigned location. Once they are parked, the owners start to do a wipe down to remove any road dirt they acquired during the drive in this morning. Some came a few miles and others drove in from the bay area. Last minute details are addressed and at 9:30 am. the Judges start to make their way to their assigned Classes and start judging.
Once all the Judging Porsches are placed, the Porsche Corrals are filling up and General parking is rolling in, the fairways are pretty full. My work is done, for now, so I wander around talking to many old and new friends, check out some of the Sponsor/Vendor tents and walking through the Werks Corrals.
After the judging is completed, my next task is collecting all 13 of the Class winners and lining them up so they can across the tee box and collect their trophies and be interviewed by a member of the PCA staff.
Redwood Region's Jeremy & Joanna Waen brought home a Werks Trophy for winning the Boxster & Cayman Class with their 2003 Boxster S.
Redwood's Edward Boracchia's had his 1992 964 Coupe was featured in
this year's "Special Winner's Circle" for 2023 winners.

Monterey Mecum Auto Auction
Pat Burke
Vice-President
During our trip to Car Week in Monterey, my wife Katherine and I
were treated to an exclusive PCA event, the Mecum Auto Auction at the Old Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey. We’ve only seen the Mecum on TV, so this was going to be special. We drove onto the grounds and were directed to a PCA Porsche only parking corral of only 50 cars. We were then escorted to an hour-long presentation
that explained the history of Mecum and the behind-the-scenes workings of the auction process from Mecum’s David Morton and
Lee Giannone.
The informative presentation explained how the financing works, how auction items are obtained, the transportation of the cars, the television rights with Motortrend and a lively question and answer session. On the financing story, Lee told us that at one auction, he personally arranged credit for one couple to bid up to one million dollars on the spot. Well, they were the successful bidders of several cars and at the end of the day settled their account, IN CASH
| |
The informative presentation explained how the financing works, how auction items are obtained, the transportation of the cars, the television rights with Motortrend and a lively question and answer session. On the financing story, Lee told us that at one auction, he personally arranged credit for one couple to bid up to one million dollars on the spot. Well, they were the successful bidders of several cars and at the end of the day settled their account, IN CASH!!
Lee also shared that Mecum, reaches deep into the communities where the auctions are held and provides opportunities for community organizations to be active as a part of the Mecum family during the entire auction. All of the “pushers” and “polishers” of the cars that are being auctioned are from local recovery and halfway homes. That involvement provides purpose and confidence to each person during the 4-5 day exciting environment, with camaraderie, amazing food and so much gratitude!
After the presentation, our small group of fellow PCA members, from all over the country, were then able to enter the large preview tents to see some amazing one-of-a-kind cars. We then entered the actual auction tent which resembles a small rock concert venue or a brightly lit television studio with loud music playing and strobe lights blazing. I guess that activates the testosterone in the buyers to spend the BIG money.
| |
Once inside, before the auction began, we were treated to an up close and personal viewing of the Hero Car from the 1971 movie Le Mans staring the late Steve McQueen, the Porsche 917K-022. The car was contained in a glass booth, and it will be auctioned off in Florida during Mecum Kissimmee, January 2025. It is expected to sell for over $20 million. And, I was honored to personally meet the President and founder of Mecum Auctions, Dana Mecum. It was quite the personal experience!
We took our seats and as the auction was about to begin, the Star-Spangled banner was performed by a local high school music instructor on the trumpet and then, the Mecum Anthem, AC/DC’s Thunderstruck. Again, raising that hormone level to the next level!
| |
And then, let it begin… as motorcycles and cars began to be driven in under their own power then pushed on to the auction stage one after the other bidders began to raise their hands and several bidding wars were started, it was a surrealistic moment. One successful bidder of several motorcycles was a man in his 60’s seated in the second row. He was having his 5-year-old grandson bid for him during this session and the auctioneer was talking directly to the little boy asking if he wanted to raise the bid. Crazy!
There were so many notable cars, I was like a kid in a candy shop. Just focusing on the Porsches was mind boggling. I was able to check out a 1959 Porsche 718 RSK center seat, a 1992 Schuppan-Porsche 962CR #05 of 50, a 1973 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight 1 of only 200 made in the lightweight configuration. Several 2005 Carrera GT’s an bunch of beautiful 356’s. The volume of fabulous cars at this auction was overwhelming. Lots on motorcycles, a beautiful1963 Corvette split window, 1936 Rolls Royce custom boattail and a 1992 Bentley Turbo R that sold for $17,000 with no reserve. That was a bargain!!!
| |
As we walked back to our car, headed to lunch in Pacific Grove, the golf course was packed with every type of car or truck imaginable, and you could feel the excitement in the air from the crowd that was getting larger with folks arriving. It was also very nice to see families with kids looking at the cars in amazement.
Oh, and Kurt Fischer texted me and said he saw me on Motortrend TV photobombing several cars during the auction! Very cool!
I want to thank our PCA National for the opportunity to participate in this event. It was an exciting, fulfilling and educational moment that was much appreciated! If you ever get the chance, DO IT!

Events Director
I arrive amid the beautiful cloud free skies in Napa Valley... way
before Bruce Mooers gets there. His people are showing up to
open the winery and getting ready for 50 Porsche people!
At 9:00 AM... up drives Bruce in his black Carrera cabriolet...he
tells me to back the cars in so the noses are out front... it makes
for better pictures! Bruce has been a member of the Redwood Region for years... he is one of us!
| |
Slowly our people arrive car by car... the parking lot fills up nicely..., for this event... it's been several years since we visited Nickel & Nickel. I do the magic Kurt yell to get everyone's attention and introduce Bruce Mooers to the crowd. He immediately launches in welcoming
us to the property! We fill into the Red Barn and are handled glasses of chardonnay to sip!
| |
This barn was built in the 1700's in New England and completely disassembled, shipped and rebuilt by the N&N people... now that's a job! It's 2 stories tall... all post and beam construction,
it permeates a delightful oak smell.
| |
Outside we go and Bruce tells us about the sorting system which uses lasers and AI to sort the grapes and get rid of any MOG (Matter Other than Grapes). I have learned so much more about this wine business!
Off we go into another building where the huge cool holding tanks are located. These hold the grapes and juices for the fermenting process. Down steps into below the storage tanks where Bruce tells us about all the different soils that make up the Napa Valley…the terroirs…which mean the soils and climate. All the Nickel and Nickel wines come from their own terrior which makes each vintage unique!
Down again into the barrel room... hundreds of French white oak barrels labeled, and bar coded for the aging process before the wines are bottled! We sampled 4 unique Cabernet's and have a huge charcuterie board filled with all kinds of tasty snacks!
Bruce has 2 magnums of Cabernets that he has donated to our club! We have raffle tickets, and they are given to all our members…and Bruce draws the magic tickets… and the winners are...Brian Cooley and Paul Christman...plus they get wooden boxes that the magnums fit in. The boxes are a great addition!
Many thanks to all the staff people from Nickel & Nickel and to Bruce Mooers for setting up this wonderful event! We will be back to Far Niente...Nickel &; Nickel or Bella Union in 2025!
These events are not to be missed!
It's not just the cars...it's our people!
| |
After the wonderful tour at Nickel & Nickel, it was time for lunch. VP Pat Burke had arranged for our lunch stop at Gott's Roadside in St. Helena. Saturday morning before they came to N&N, President Sharon Neidel & David Bunch had dropped off cones at Gott's, and thanks to the Gott's crew, they had blocked off a section of their parking lot for us. A group of hungry Porsche people joined the masses at Gott's and devoured their lunches.
If you were unable to join this tour, you can see all the wonderful photos taken at the
Redwood Region Flicker account.
Thanks to all the club's photographers for taking all the photos. Katherine Zimmer Burke, Michael Alan Ross and David Bunch.

Electronic driving routes on your phone – for free!
Ben Davoren
The world of creature comforts in our Porsches continues to expand. I know my own 2017 Carrera S Cabriolet treats me with kid gloves, including both heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel for those arctic temps we get, and lots of adjustments for both power
and handling. Way-finding on our driving tours, however, has always been better with a trusty human navigator with a detailed map and a cue sheet. For a few years, those navigators have been able to use GPS units and cell phones to assist them. The newest generation of map-making tools allows for last-minute updates to be made by the route owner so that everyone on the tour can have up-to-the minute directions literally – and automatically – in the palm of their hand. The turn-by-turn voice instructions can even be read to you through the sound system in your car if it’s new enough.
If you are a Redwood Region member, you can have access to our club’s entire library of
driving routes since 2021, download them to your phone, and have real-time turn-by-turn instructions even where there is no cell service! If you want, you can print them out at home.
You can even copy them and edit them online to create your own version of a drive or a
bike ride. And it’s all free to you.
While many of you have already taken advantage of this ability, I get questions on our tours about how exactly this works, so I figured I would outline the steps here and include a few key links. Most importantly, please email me to get the link to become a member of the Redwood Region PCA club at ridewithgps.com. Ridewithgps.com, while created for cyclists who are often out where there is no cell service, is a wonderful tool for creating – and sharing – any kind of driving or cycling route, on or off of major roads. We have a core group of folks who have used
it for several years to create our club’s driving tours and it’s pretty easy to learn. Here are the directions to prepare your smartphone for our next great driving tour:
1. Using your favorite web browser, create a free account on ridewithgps.com. No need for a
trial version or a pay version;
2. While you are logged in, using the Club Directory or this search link if the directory isn’t obvious, find the Redwood Region PCA page. You can click on the Apply to Join link and we
will let you in. If you have problems, please email me as above for the auto-join link;
3. On your smartphone (either Android or iPhone), download the ridewithgps app from your
App Store and login with the same email address you used to create your free online
ridewithgps account;
4. Tap the Redwood Region PCA club logo on the app homepage, or tap More in the lower right then tap Organizations;
5. Select Organization Routes from our club’s mobile page;
6. Filter and sort our club routes using the toolbar at the top. We are now naming all of our
routes so that the first words are the Destination, and then the year (so you can see how current the route is), and finally, the driving start location. For example,
MartoranaWinery – 2024 – from Vintage Oaks;
7. Tap the name of the route to view it;
8. If you just want to start navigation (using cell service) click the NAVIGATE button in the lower left of the route preview;
9. If you don’t know that you will have cell service on your route, however, then you should download the route for “offline use”. If taking this step tells you that you need to upgrade your account, then you are not yet a member of our ridewithgps.com club! Email me as above to be sure that happens;
10. More details are available in a PDF that has these steps along with images, which you can download from DropBox here. Ridewithgps help pages are also very, very useful and you can learn a ton more about how it all works there;
11. The final Pro Tip is if you have a newer Porsche with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you
can plug your phone in to your car to be charged and select “AUX” as the input in your car’s PCM source menu. That way, your turn-by-turn instructions will come directly over your car’s sound system speakers and you will never have to touch your phone or a paper map again
while driving after you tap “Navigate” at the start!

If it’s fall, it must be time for another round of “Work a Bunch & Earn Your Lunch”, when I hope you will join me and a group of 20 or so of your fellow Redwood Region members to volunteer
at the Redwood Empire Food Bank! The date will be Friday October 11. As we did last October and this past April, we’ll have a combination of a short (and optional) one hour driving tour, a 3-
hour volunteer shift at the Food Bank, and then hosted lunch. The work in the warehouse in Windsor creates meals for Sonoma, Lake, and Mendocino County families who suffer from food insecurity. If you’ve been there, you already know how state-of-the-art it is, how much fun we had, and how gratifying the work is. If you haven’t been, we welcome you with open arms! As an update, the Food Bank has now gone microplastic-free and is no longer using those tricky net bags for fruit; they now have sophisticated trays that we will likely load up for needy Redwood Region residents.
| |
At the Barley & Bine Beer Café after our shift the club will pay for your lunch item; you just pay
for your beverage of choice. We are hoping to field a team of 18. Just register on MSR and if
you or your companion volunteer need to set up a personalized volunteer account at the food
bank, I will guide you through it. Let me know if you have any difficulty or any questions.
Hope to see you Friday October 11th!
If you are looking for a no-elbow-grease event in support of charity, Homeward Bound of Marin
is holding their 50th Anniversary celebration at the Mill Valley Community Center on Sunday
September 22nd . Tickets may still be available when you read this newsletter, but if not, you
can read more about the good work they do on their website.

Dear Redwood,
What a wonderful day on the green! We could not be more proud to share with you the success of the CASA Hearts FORE Children Golf Tournament that took place on August 29th at Windsor Golf Club.
Because of a very generous community of corporations and individuals sponsoring the event, golfers, donors, and vendors we raised over $65,000 to support Sonoma County's most vulnerable youth! We cannot thank you enough!
Your support changes lives, a positive dividend for your dollars invested. All proceeds benefit our vital mission of providing Court Appointed Special Advocates to speak up for children in foster care so they get the support and services in the areas of education, healthcare and safety.
Special thanks to our CASA Event Committee, board of directors, CASA volunteers and staff for their hard work supporting this event.
In Partnership for Children,
Heloisa Heinen
CASA Executive Director
