Redwood City Hosts Free “Get Storm Ready”

Workshop on Oct. 10

Residents and businesses can learn how to prepare for winter storms and help reduce neighborhood flooding

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (Oct. 1, 2026) — The City of Redwood City is inviting residents and businesses to “Get Storm Ready Redwood City,” a free storm preparedness event from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Public Works Services Corporation Yard, 1400 Broadway.

With a very strong El Niño likely this fall and winter, the event will focus on practical steps community members can take now to prepare for potentially heavy rain and storms, protect their properties and help keep neighborhoods ready. The event will include:

  • A brief overview of the City’s storm preparation and maintenance efforts
  • Tips for preparing homes and businesses for severe weather
  • A demonstration of how to properly fill and use sandbags and obtain free sandbags from the City
  • Information about signing up for SMC Alert and preparing an emergency kit
  • Resources on Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT, preparedness
  • English- and Spanish-language storm preparedness materials

Residents and businesses can also play an important role in helping neighborhoods prepare for heavy rain. Keeping gutters and storm drains clear of leaves and debris helps rainwater move through the drainage system and can reduce localized flooding. Through Redwood City’s upcoming Adopt-a-Drain program, community members can volunteer to regularly clear a storm drain near their home or business.

At the Oct. 10 event, attendees can sign up for Adopt-a-Drain and receive a cleanup kit to get started.

Other simple steps residents and businesses can take before storm season include clearing gutters and catch basins, obtaining sandbags before they are needed, preparing emergency supplies and signing up for emergency alerts. The City encourages community members to prepare early rather than wait until a major storm is in the forecast.
