REDWOOD CITY NAMED ALL-AMERICA CITY FINALIST
|
|
This past weekend, City of Redwood City staff, along with staff of Redwood City Together and colleagues, represented Redwood City as one of twenty cities nationwide named as finalists for the 2023 All-America City title. Presented by the National Civic League, the All-America City Award is a prestigious national award given annually to 10 cities to recognize communities that have successfully leveraged civic engagement, collaboration, inclusiveness, and innovation to address local change.
This year’s theme was “Creating Thriving Communities through Youth Engagement,” and the following initiatives were included in Redwood City’s application for the award:
1. The Purposeful Action Creation & Engagement (PACE) Plan, which responds to community concerns about youth behavior in Downtown and aims to foster positive relationships between community leaders, law enforcement, and the Bike Life movement youth;
2. The People’s Budget, which was a participatory budget initiative in which community members directly decided how to spend $1 million as part of the City’s budget;
5. And its Anti-Displacement Strategy to preserve affordable housing and protect housing options for low- and moderate-income residents.
During the competition, each city was required to present their programs creatively. Redwood City's representatives prepared a skit that showcased the incredible work happening within the community. Although Redwood City did not win the National All-America City Award on this occasion, we take great pride in representing our city, and our efforts received recognition from participants representing larger cities who were impressed by our accomplishments. Mark your calendars to Save the Date: October 11!
Last year the Library Foundation held our inaugural Upscale Pub Crawl in recognition of Banned Books Week. Over 350 people purchased tickets, allowing them to receive a discounted beverage from select downtown pubs and learn more about banned books from Library Foundation volunteers at each location. Banned Books Week 2023 will be October 1-7, and our Second Annual Upscale Pub Crawl will be held on Wednesday, October 11.
Book banning (or challenging) in school libraries increased nearly 30% in the last semester of the 2022-2023 school year. PEN America, the nonprofit free-speech organization, found 1,477 instances of prohibited books during the first half of this academic year. Legislation passed in some states has caused some educators to remove all books in school libraries or classrooms for fear of going against these laws. Banning also occurs in public libraries, with some counties threatening to withhold library funding if challenged books are not removed. Texas has the highest number of bans, followed by Florida, Missouri, Utah, and South Carolina.
For Pub Crawl information and tickets, go here.
If you are interested in being involved in fundraising activities, such as the pub crawl, that support library initiatives, fill out the volunteer form on our website: https://www.rclfdn.org/volunteer
If you are interested in a longer-term commitment, please consider joining the RCLF board. Return the form found here.

Are you looking to give back to the community? Do you like treasure hunts? You might be the perfect person to volunteer with Redwood City Public Library to find holds for other customers at the Downtown Library. Here are few comments from our holds volunteers:
“Personally, one of the main reasons I like pulling holds is because it’s fun to see what kinds of things people are checking out. Sometimes it’s informative and fascinating, and other times it’s bizarre and silly. It never gets dull because you never know what you’re going to get. You learn so much about the people in your community through pulling holds.” --Emily
“I enjoy helping provide a service that I also use myself.” –Sonya
“I get physical exercise, mental exercise, and social exercise talking with other staff members and volunteers. And, as an avid reader myself, I get satisfaction knowing I helped put a book in someone’s hands to educate or entertain. I enjoy every second of it.” –Stephen
If this volunteer opportunity is of interest to you, please contact Gene Suarez at gsuarez@redwoodcity.org or (650) 780-7098.
