📣 How Does the Redwood Region Rank for Healthcare Provider Access?

The 2025 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps data reveal new insights into the distribution of healthcare providers across the Redwood Region — and underscore ongoing challenges in ensuring equitable access to care.

Access to healthcare isn’t just about insurance coverage. It also depends on the availability of physicians, dentists, and mental health providers in local communities. While specialists play an important role in treatment and recovery, primary care providers are essential for prevention, wellness, and early detection — serving as the foundation for a strong healthcare system.

This year’s County Health Rankings data come from the American Medical Association Physician Masterfiles and CMS National Provider Identifier records, offering one of the most comprehensive snapshots of provider availability nationwide. The ratios reflect the number of residents per provider, meaning that lower numbers indicate better access to care.

Across the Redwood Region, the results are mixed:

  • Lake County ranks the lowest overall, with the highest ratios for physicians (2,440:1), dentists (2,340:1), and mental health providers (240:1).
  • Del Norte County reports the fewest primary care providers per capita (1,130:1) but fares better for dental access (1,160:1).
  • Mendocino County shows a moderate level of access, with a primary care physician ratio of 1,250:1.
  • Humboldt County has the most favorable ratios for both primary care (700:1) and mental health providers (140:1).

These numbers highlight persistent disparities across rural and coastal communities particularly for primary care providers and dentists — and the need for continued investment in healthcare workforce development, recruitment, and retention. As the Redwood Region advances collaborative initiatives like Redwood Region RISE, addressing provider shortages remains a top priority to ensure every resident can access quality, timely care close to home.
