Can you believe that it’s September? Holy Mackerel, where does the time go?

It continues to be a busy time of the year for Katherine and me. In less than two weeks, we head north to Vancouver, BC, to join our PCA friends for Treffen at Sea, Wine Country Princess Cruise.  Hey, don’t we live in wine country? It’s another PCA event that we wanted to experience, and it’s six days packed with fun. I’ll tell you all about it next month.

Our Werks Reunion trip was another fast-paced, but slow-traffic-paced, three-day event. It started the day before we left Napa with a six-hour detailing job in my driveway on my 992 by Max Woolf, owner of Woolf Mobile Detailing. Max is a PCA Test Drive member with a great eye for detail. His effort made my day of judging at Werks almost effortless. The car was so clean and shiny that it still looked fantastic after driving to Monterey in the rain. My wipers almost never stopped!

But on the morning of the event, and following a few directions from Max, the car looked once again spotless sitting on the 18th fairway. Thank you, Max, for your help. If you’re looking to have your car detailed, he’s the guy to go with! I couldn’t have been happier. A link to his website is in the above paragraph.

Werks Reunion was a great day. The weather was perfect, and the crowds were off the charts. The amount of foot traffic coming into the event was crazy. My car was close to the entrance gate, and I couldn’t believe how many people walked past it all day long. I heard estimates of more than 14,000 people attending the event. Congratulations to PCA for putting together such a fabulous day!

But the traffic—oh boy! In my experience, on the Monterey Peninsula, it was worse than previous years. There was total gridlock at one point, with intersections completely blocked. I arrived at Werks with only 10 minutes to spare but, I was ready to be judged, thanks to Max!

Our Redwood Region is in a very good place. We’ve had several events over the past few months that have shown the new enthusiasm and energy within our Club. The last couple of POSSE events have been very well attended, and our New Members Run to Goat Rock on August 29th had 35 cars and 53 attendees. It was a beautiful day at the beach, and it was great to meet both “new” and “old” club members.

Our monthly Board meetings are also well attended, they run smoothly, they’re timely, and they always include a great meal that we share together. I’d like to invite you to attend one. They’re held on the last Tuesday of each month at 6:30 PM at Torches in Petaluma. And your dinner is on us!

And SAVE THE DATE—December 12th! Our annual Holiday Party will be at Torches as well. It’s going to be a great party of fabulous food, friends and dancing!

Our next big event is our annual Concours, held in Sonoma at the Town Square on Sunday, October 4th. It’s always a great day at a fabulous venue, surrounded by beautiful cars. You can have your Porsche judged, displayed, or simply attend and walk around. I’ll be there, and I’d love to see you.

Vice President's Message — So you want to put an event together?

Recently, I’ve been pleased to have been approached by several members regarding putting on an event for the Redwood Region. Bravo!! We welcome and need new folks to step up, learn the processes and bring renascent creativity to our Event Calendar! The only limitation you have is your own creativity, and a budget… I’ve had ideas about an overnight event to Paso Robles, and trip to Laguna Seca, and several others.

How do I get started?

The best way to get started is to run your idea by members while at other events. If you have generated excitement, proceed to the next step which would be to present it to the Board. Not as intimidating as it sounds as we are always looking for new people to get engaged and to bring new, fresh ideas to the table! The Board, and membership in general, is chock full of event experience. We are a bubbling cauldron of contacts at wineries, restaurants, sponsors and other event venues – we can help prevent you from spinning your wheels right out of the gate.

What are some of the variables in the planning stages?

Putting together an event can be like assembling a puzzle – there are lots of variables: date & time; type of event (tour, lunch, overnight, sponsor-related and so on); venue; drive (if part of the event); a meal; and more. Sound intimidating? Not if you use our time-honored and thoughtfully constructed EVENT PLANNING checklist. The checklist takes you from inception through all the variables including budget planning, insurance requesting, route planning and marketing your event via MSReg and our newsletter. Allowing enough time to plan the event is not to be ignored!!

Who My Gonna Call?

Kurt Fischer is our Event Chair, and he can certainly get you started on your way to a successful event. I can also be of assistance in pointing you in the right direction… We have a slew of members that can assist in planning your drive (in Ride With GPS) and assisting with making you familiar with the nuances of MSReg (our online registration system). One of my goals for 2027 is to assist in planning and implementing classes on both of our online systems to educate and familiarize new members who are itching to learn…

Are there any pratfalls to watch out for?

Sure, there are bound to be bumps in the road along the way to planning a wonderfully thought-out, well-organized event:

1. The ‘Porsche’ Club Syndrome – when you say you’re from the P-O-R-S-C-H-E Club, sometimes the price gets bumped up because of the perceived “wealth” of our group. Perceived is the key word…
2. Not following the Event Planner – This tool will absolutely help eliminate forgetting to include important pieces of planning the event.
3. Understating your budget – our events are paid for by our members and sometimes, depending on the event, the club will step in to subsidize a reasonable amount. Very important to stick to the budget!

Remember, the best thing you can do is explore your event ideas through the membership. We have great events every year but are always looking for new ideas. The sky is the limit when it comes to your creativity. Can’t wait to entertain your ideas…

And please join us at our 2027 Planning Meeting on November 17th at Torches! (Our November meeting will be a week early because of the holiday).

This is my third Porsche, and what a beautiful car it is! I purchased it in May 2026 from Porsche Marin as a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle with just 15,000 miles on the odometer.

It's been an absolute pleasure to drive daily, and I receive compliments on its looks wherever I go. That alone puts a smile on my face each time I get behind the wheel.

I never thought I would enjoy a car more than my 2007 Carrera 4S, but this one has exceeded my expectations. It delivers everything I loved about my previous Porsche and then some.

As President of the Redwood Region I think I represent the club well.

1992 911 Carrera 2 in Cobalt Blue Metallic

The Porsche 964 is the company's internal name for the Porsche 911 manufactured and sold between 1989-1994.

The 964 was designed by Benjamin Dimson in 1986. The design was considered 87% new over its predecessor.

Porsche added the rear-wheel-drive Carrera 2 variant in 1990.

In 1992, 609 C2 coupes were produced (per Hagerty valuation statistics).

The naturally aspirated engine called the M64 was used for all 964 models, with a flat-6 displacement of 3.6 litres.

This is FLASH.

With a flat six, naturally aspirated engine, produced for three years in the GTS model and because FLASH was made in 2015, I call him the middle child.

FLASH is the best GTS I've ever owned! We can autocross with the best, do high performance back roads driving!

We enjoy a good Poker Run Rally but this car is superb as a highway driving car and yes I own a dog, a Whippet, and his hair is on the seat to prove it.

I've had many Porsches in my life and this is the finest Porsche I've ever owned!

This is an unrestored original car. We purchased it in July 2010 with 74k miles. Changes made by the previous owner are H4 headlights and 944 front wheels front & rear with 1" spacers.

Whilst cleaning the car we found the original window sticker - displayed here - as the car was delivered new to Woodstock VT.

It has also resided in San Luis Obispo and Fresno and now in Marin, where we purchased it. We are fortunate that the former two owners were good stewards of this beautiful car. We too are aiming to be the same good stewards.

It is a pleasure to drive and we are happy to show it here today.

Tell us about yourself

I’ve been retired for 11 years. Previously, I worked in finance in the Financial District of San Francisco for 40 years. I’m married and have 2 daughters who are both married, and 4 grandkids ranging up to 8 years old. They both live nearby so we see them often and do a lot of babysitting!

What do you drive?

I got a 2025 718 Cayman in December 2025. I was previously driving an MBZ convertible. Before that, I had a 1987 911 for nearly 20 years. It was a fantastic car, but was starting to cost me more in repair bills when I sold it. I had been missing the 911 (AND THE CLUTCH) for some time. It took a while to find a new Cayman with a 6-speed. I have the style edition and am enjoying it a lot.

Why did you join PCA?

I joined the PCA because I’m very excited about the drives. I’m looking forward to getting out into the countryside with other Porsche owners!

Tell us about yourself

I grew up in England but I’ve lived in California off and on for half my life. I’ve been a fan of anything with an engine for as long as I can remember, and despite changing cars an unreasonable amount of times, I've never owned a Porsche until now. Living in Marin, as long as I am outdoors, I’m happy. 

What do you drive?

I have a 1967 912 SWB in Polo Red. It’s my first Porsche and I specifically looked for a 912 after a lot of research about the handling and drivability vs a same year 911 (not that the 911 is anything to be sniffed at). I did exactly what I promised I wouldn’t do and bought sight unseen on BaT. The seller was a very liberal with the truth, and in the 10 months of ownership, I’ve been focusing on fixing the suspension, steering, and the various items that needed attention. I also had the car stripped, the rust and bodywork addressed and it’s repainted (it looks beautiful!). I still have a long list of items to work on - but I’m sure all classic Porsche owners do too. 

This has been said many times before but favourite things include - with such an old manual car you need to totally focused on driving at all times (sounds crazy saying that of course). In addition to this, the build quality is incredible for a 60 year old vehicle. The sound of the doors closing, the handling and that it starts on first crank even after a week of sitting amaze me. It’s small but practical - I’n 6’3” but fit fine, my family and the dog can go for a ride, it’s been around Sonoma Raceway, and today I had a power washer and some building materials in the back. It also looks extremely cool! 

Why did you join PCA?

It seemed like a no-brainer - getting access to the information on offer, and being able to attend events. It’s great to chat and geek out over old Porsches. I’m hoping to get to the Sonoma Concours in October. 

Is there anything else you'd like other members to know?

I’m mechanically useless but plan on fixing that. But I am doing a great job getting my 10 year old daughter Zara into cars (mostly Porsches of course) and racing - we’re really lucky to live near Sonoma Raceway and she is also a hardcore F1 fan (and named our dog Kimi Raikkonen!).

Tell us about yourself

I am retired after working 25+ years at the University of California-San Francisco. I live in Novato with my wife. I have two children, a stepdaughter and four grandchildren. Our two oldest grandchildren are in college; a third grandchild is a senior in high school and the youngest is in elementary school.

What do you drive?

I drive a 2006 Porsche Cayman S which I purchased in 2020. I am the second owner. I had been casually looking for one when my wife spotted this car parked along De Long Avenue on downtown Novato with a “For Sale” sign in the window. I contacted the seller and we quickly agreed on the price and I bought it.

Although I have been a serious “car guy” from an early age, I must admit that I was never all that interested in Porsches. I was more an Alfa Romeo or Lotus type. In fact, I owned both of those cars in the past. However, when Porsche introduced the Cayman, I was immediately struck by the design and the mid-engine layout. The only problem was, at around $72,000, they were too expensive. So, I waited 14 years until the price came down.

What I like best about the Cayman is its ideal balance and I am not just talking about driving dynamics. It is powerful enough without being ridiculously over-powered. It is also very practical. With front and rear trunk spaces, I can carry anything we need for a vacation. The styling of the first-generation Cayman is still stunning. The curves of the rear fenders, the arc of the roof, the air scoops ahead of the rear wheels, the way the rear window dips down below the rear fender arches; everything just works beautifully together. 

Why did you join PCA?

I decided to join PCA to be connected to other Porsche owners. Fellow owners can be valuable resources for information about idiosyncrasies of the car. Also, I enjoy the social aspects of being part of a group.

Tell us about yourself

I've been married 30 years to my wonderful wife, Talley, who works with families with kids or young adults struggling with mental health or addiction, and a family needing specialized medium to long term support. I retired from Ernst and Young last year from a career in IT management consulting. I have two adult children, Ellis who has a mobile car detailing business focused on classic and German cars in Bend Oregon, and a second kid, Dylan, who is studying Art on the east coast. For “fun” I have raced in numerous long distance bike rides including race across America, Race Across the West, and various 500 mile courses. I play guitar and perform locally from time to time.

What do you drive?

My first Porsche was a 924 back in 1988 in the UK. As a recent graduate, it was the only one I could afford. In 1990, I moved to the US and upgraded to a 1988 944 Turbo, which I tinkered with extensively until finally selling it. Next came a 1997 Boxster gifted to my wife by our best friend who moved back to Europe. This car is now owned and driven by my son, so it has been in the family since new.

Just before COVID, I finally bought my first 911, a 2016 GTS which puts a cheesy grin on my face every time I sit behind the wheel. Last month my son detailed the ‘84 Cabrio owned by a wonderful 86 year old lady in Bend who had owned it from new. It seemed like a car my wife would love to drive so we made the investment. After my youngest kid called Talley and I quote “I want to inherit this car!” the deal was sealed.

Why did you join PCA?

How better to share Porsche stories, oogle at other cars and get new ideas for sourcing parts, enhancements and upgrades. I’m excited to go on group drives and geek out with other obsessed people!

Tell us about yourself

I moved to Marin three years ago from Florida, to marry Heather. Florida is a fine place to arrive somewhere and a poor place to drive, which may explain some of what follows.

I have spent most of my life enjoying the destinations and paying very little attention to the journey. Get there, be there, come home. I am working to right that wrong, and the 911 is the most deliberate step I have taken toward it. The other vehicle in the driveway is a Defender, which handles overlanding and pulls the horse trailer. It is excellent at getting somewhere. It has never once made me want to take the long way home.

What do you drive?

A 2022 911 Targa 4 GTS, and it's my first Porsche. I knew I wanted a convertible or a Targa. What I did not think about until I had already decided is that a toy Targa sat on my desk for something like fifteen years while I was growing up. It seemed like a reasonable time to upgrade to the real one.

The search took months. I settled on the spec first and then waited, and eventually found the car at a dealer in Los Angeles. I had it delivered, and I had the truck drop it off at the restaurant where my family was in the middle of dinner. They did not know it was coming. I would recommend the experience to anyone with the nerve for it.

The thing I underestimated is how comfortable it is over a long distance. I expected a car I would want to drive for an hour. I got one I want to drive all day, which turns out to be the whole point for someone trying to learn to care about the journey.

Why did you join PCA?

Two reasons, and one confession.

The first reason is roads. Northern California is full of good ones and I have found maybe a tenth of them on my own. The second is that I am new to owning one of these, and there is a large body of knowledge about these cars that does not live in a manual. It lives in people who have been at this a while. I would rather learn it from them.

The confession is that I am curious about DE. I have never been on a track. I suspect I would find out quickly how much of what I think I know is actually just the car.

Is there anything else you'd like other members to know?

I am always looking for a drive that ends somewhere worth eating. If you have a road, a bakery, or a hotel within a few hours of Marin that more people should know about, tell me.



Outside of driving there are horses, a vegetable garden, and a record collection. My first camping trip in the 911 is coming up shortly, and several people have told me this is a mistake. I will report back.

As we enjoy Northern California’s entry into fall weather, I hope you are all doing well and putting some miles on your legal-until-2029 summer tires! Consider this a reminder that as the days shorten, you can get out on the road and simultaneously assist our club in helping out our neighbors by working another morning shift at the Redwood Empire Food Bank. On Thursday November 12th, for the seventh time, we will have an optional one-hour driving tour starting in Windsor from 9-10, then an always-fun three-hour work shift from 10-1 at the Food Bank, followed by a hosted lunch at the Barley & Bine Beer Café in Windsor. (You buy any alcoholic beverage while the club buys your food.)

Registration for our 20-member Team Redwood opens September 10th through our MSR link. Registration will close November 5th. I hope to see you there.

In other charity news, CASA, the Sonoma Court Appointed Special Advocates organization, had a successful “shotgun start” golf tournament fundraiser in Windsor. Feel free to ask me more if you are considering having a team enter next year. Also, CASA will be available to provide more information about the amazing work they do with foster youth at our Concours on Sunday October 4th on the Sonoma Square.

This September Membership Report recognizes Redwood Region changes that occurred during the previous month, August. At the end of August our Redwood Region had a total of 1,202 Members/Co-members, a decrease of three members from the end of July (778 Primary Members and 424 Co-Members). Ten of these joined PCA, and the Redwood Region, in August. Two members transferred in to the Redwood Region while two also transferred out. We had one new person subscribe to our Test Drive program. Currently, there are still 16 Test Drive subscriptions from the Redwood Region. The Test Drive program is a great way for future Porsche owners to learn about Porsche and the PCA while searching for their perfect first Porsche. The resources available to the members are quite extensive.

Forty-eight of our Redwood Region members will celebrate their five year, or more, PCA Membership anniversaries in September. They are shown in the table below. For September, our longest tenured PCA member, by is James Hurson. Look for James driving his 1971 911T around Santa Rosa. James has been a PCA member for all of 54 years of driving pleasure.

What a summer it has been—and we’re not done yet!

One of the best things about PCA is that there really is no single way to enjoy this club. Maybe your perfect Saturday involves chasing cones at an autocross, preparing every last detail for a Concours, heading to the track, joining a driving tour, volunteering at an event, or simply parking your Porsche next to a few others and spending the afternoon with friends.

So here’s my challenge as we head toward fall: do something fun! Better yet, do something you haven’t done before. Look beyond your own Region and see what our neighbors are doing. Try a Zone event. Take a look at a National event. Volunteer for something. We have ten Regions in Zone 7 and an incredible variety of opportunities right outside our doors.

PCA is at its best when we participate—and there is still plenty of 2026 ahead of us.

2026 Sacramento Valley Region (SVR) Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) Rally Series

• Open to all members in all Regions.



The Sacramento Valley Region (SVR) of the Porsche Club of America will be hosting a series of Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) road rallies that start at various locations within the greater Sacramento Region. The rallies are scheduled for Saturdays with the first car departing at 9:31 AM. They will typically be 90 to 120 miles in length and less than four hours in duration. The rallies will have reasonably easy to follow directions using mostly scenic low volume paved roads.

• Route instructions will be consumable for the beginning rallyist but still providing challenges and learning experiences for all participants.
• Time and location details for all events will be posted to the SVR website svr-pcaor.org
• Registration for all events will be through MotorsportReg.
• The entry fee for each event will be $25 per car. Entry requires a street-legal vehicle, a licensed and insured driver, a navigator, and a smart device (e.g., cell phone or tablet) running the FREE Richta GPS Competitor ‘app.’

Submit photos and articles about Club events or related activities. Please submit your entry by the 5th day of the month for inclusion in that month's newsletter. Articles received after the deadline will be considered for the next month's newsletter. The editorial staff reserves the right to edit all materials submitted for publication.
