Redwoods Rural Health Center

June 2026

Golden Anniversary

History

"In the early 1970’s a handful of friends & neighbors living in the hills of Southern Humboldt started talking to each other about the need for health care that would work for them.

In this founding group were midwives & young parents seeking support for the growing home birth movement. There were people interested in exploring alternative therapies & people who had received bad or disrespectful treatment at the hands of the doctors they had visited in the cities. Most of these founders were poor; many were on welfare & had experienced discrimination based on their poverty, their apparent counter cultural appearance, or their ethnic or racial status.

The common vision this group had is still expressed in the Mission Statement of Redwoods Rural Health Center--that there be a place where a person could go to get healthcare that was respectful, that was client led, that recognized the validity of a variety of healing modalities, that tried to treat the whole person."

.

Prepare the Baking Sheet

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  • Spread it evenly to your desired flatbread shape and thickness.
  • Sprinkle oregano or any other preferred seasonings on top.

Bake

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  • Bake for 30–35 minutes, depending on the thickness.
  • The flatbread is ready when it turns golden brown.

Since this recipe contains no flour or refined carbs, it’s an ideal choice for those on a low-carb, or diabetic-friendly diet. Unlike regular bread, which can cause blood sugar spikes, this flatbread helps maintain stable energy levels.

This flatbread works perfectly as a soft, flexible wrap that holds up well with fillings. Try:

Grilled chicken, fresh veggies, and a drizzle of sauce for a healthy lunch.

Scrambled eggs, avocado, and turkey bacon for a protein-packed breakfast wrap.

Hummus, roasted red peppers, and feta cheese for a Mediterranean-style wrap.

Try making a sweet version by:

Mixing in cinnamon for warmth.

Drizzling honey or maple syrup on top.

Adding vanilla extract for a subtle sweetness.

Sprinkling chopped nuts or raisins for extra texture.

This sweet version makes a perfect breakfast flatbread or a healthy dessert alternative!

May Team Member Of The Month

Valerie Stevens RDA is such an inspiring team mate! Megan Hall who has spent years with Val says "she is a ten on a scale of one to ten!" Every single employee I asked smiled as soon as I mentioned her name. "Bubbly" was a poular descriptor , as was "Fun".

As someone who has worked with Val I can say that they are not hyping her up. They are stating facts.

On top of all that she is a highly skilled individual chairside & is kind and gentle with our patients.

Congratulations Valerie!

Breast Day Ever!

Our team did something amazing (I mean, they always do amazing things but this was special). Seeing that there was a problem with getting mammograms scheduled - we made a bold move. We went to Partnership Health plan and asked if they would be willing to assist our patients by bringing a mammogram machine and a technician to RRHC so that we could make sure our patients were able to get this critical screening done in a timely manner.

Partnership agreed to provide the service through alinea but there was a catch, we had to get at least twenty-five people done (in about seven hours) or we would be charged a fee.

Aleks our QI (that's quality improvment for those who are not acronym fluent) guru put together a stellar force for good by using our care navigators, along with our MAs (medical assistants) & our MT (maintenance technician) to hunt down and schedule women who were in need of screening, and then transform a large portion of the clinic for a single day of concentrated cancer screening.

We offered FIT testing, and Cologuard to patients, along with the self-test for cervical cancer - hoping for that Trifecta of screening win.

This year - as an added incentive - people who are existing patients of RRHC prior to the event can earn an entry ticket for each screening they complete. The ticket is then placed into a jar that corresponds to the gift the patient would like to win, and in October we will draw a phone number from each jar and someone who did the screening for either colorectal cancer, breat cancer or cervical cancer will win a 50in Flat Screen, a Makita Drill Set, or a FitBit. It sounds weirdly complicated writing it out, but it's quite simple really. You can see our display in the lobby and talk to our team about getting yourself a ticket!

With dertmination and coordination our team was able to help 29 women complete their breast cancer screening here in Redway IN ONE DAY!
