Easter offering - How's it going for you?

In this season of Lent, our pastors have challenged us not only to be shaped by reading about Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew but to also be shaped by living like Jesus, sacrificially. For this purpose, our children were given offering jars, and families were offered Easter Giving envelopes to begin thinking and working on a special offering for these six weeks building to Easter. We are now halfway. How is it going for you?

You might ask, how is an offering different than a tithe? Tithing is considered regular giving, aiming toward a Biblical goal of 10%. Offerings are above that or given for special purposes. The challenge this Lenten season is to consider offerings to help with our church missional budget.

This budget contains support for the upcoming summer youth mission, our Guatemala mission trip, support to prison and interfaith ministry, as well as support for our missionary in Tanzania and much more. The total is large (at $26,000 not counting our connectional mission), but if we can defray these costs with our Easter offering, this will help us to focus on other ministries as the year progresses. It helps us put the mission first, as we celebrate the gift of Jesus’ mission if you will.

The power of sacrifice is huge and life-changing. An individual alone usually cannot impact ministry locally and abroad, but that’s what is possible when we work together as one Body in Jesus Christ. The reality is that the pandemic and subsequent recovery have narrowed our resources for both mission and ministry. Yet, our church is very much alive with great hope and possibility. Therefore, our efforts this Lenten season and beyond can help so many as we work together to transform the world with Jesus leading the way! So, please join us in this Easter Offering which will build a transforming ministry for our youth, restore hope to a war-torn place on the African continent, and so much more!

Envelopes can be found on tables in the Narthex or Gathering Space or given through SimpleChurch online. Find all the ways at FUMCVA.OR/GIVE

Thanks to those who have already given to the Easter offering!

Thank you, FUMC, for hosting the Otterbein Concert Choir on Monday, March 6, under the direction of Dr. Gayle Walker (Martha's sister). The choir appreciated everything so much, including the sound support, sanctuary set-up, delicious dinner, comfortable space to rehearse and change into concert dress, the generous free-will offering, and the warm and welcoming audience. The performance was beautiful, as we were blessed by the exquisitely performed choral works and rich harmonies. Our church welcomed numerous visitors to the concert who were impressed and appreciative of our wonderful church. Thank you to everyone who helped make this a memorable tour stop for the choir and a lovely event for our church. We hope the Otterbein Concert Choir will come back soon!
