During our discussion, I emphasized CAPIC’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of our profession and safeguarding public trust. For over four decades, immigration consultants have been integral to the immigration system. At CAPIC, our role is to ensure this profession remains recognized, accountable, and respected. I also addressed concerns about generalized comments regarding immigration consultants. While it is important to address wrongdoing by individuals, broad generalizations are neither helpful nor fair to the many professionals who work tirelessly to uphold ethical standards and provide exemplary service.
Minister Miller acknowledged the challenges faced by the profession and emphasized the importance of restoring public trust. He also recognized the unintended impact his letter may have had on public opinion and reaffirmed his commitment to fostering a collaborative approach moving forward. Additionally, he highlighted the creation of the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants as a key step toward enhancing accountability and professionalism within the industry. He acknowledged the need for additional regulatory tools to empower the College further and assured me that the federal government is actively working on regulations to equip the College with the necessary authority to address these issues effectively. The new regulations are expected to be released soon, enabling the College to fulfill its role more effectively.
During the meeting, I also raised the issue of the large number of temporary residents in Canada. I proposed that CAPIC and IRCC work collaboratively to develop solutions. Minister Miller acknowledged the complexity of this issue and expressed openness to considering CAPIC’s recommendations.
This meeting was an important step in fostering open dialogue and collaboration with IRCC. We will continue to advocate on behalf of our profession to ensure that immigration consultants are recognized as trusted professionals in Canada’s immigration system.
